Updated Pictorial: The Complete Cast of The Hunger Games

Update: The Pictorial below has been updated to include Donald Sutherland, who has been cast as President Snow, the autocratic ruler of Panem. Snow is not a major player in the opening movie (at least, if it stays faithful to the novel), but he will become a major presence by the third film, should the franchise continue (Spoiler Alert: It will). He’s also very well cast if you consider, as I do, Sutherland’s potential for devilishly creepy.

****

The Hunger Games casting news has been 5ast and 5urious(er) for the last few months, and after the first three principals were cast, I decided rather than chase the rumor mill and vomit up half a dozen filler posts throughout the week devoted to casting and speculation (which had grown increasingly tiresome), I’d just wait until the cast had finally been assembled and lay it all out here for visual inspection. Woody Harrelson was cast as Haymitch yesterday and, for all intents and purposes, Gary Ross has put together the final full cast (save for some minor roles and extras).

Looking it over, I think he’s actually managed to pull together a really solid assemblage. I love the casting of Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, and Woody Harrelson — I think they’re spot on. I’m still on the fence about Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson as Gale and Peeta, and while Jennifer Lawerence didn’t look the part to me, she’s a strong enough actress to make it work. But inspecting them all, the one who most looks like how I envisioned her in the novel is actually Willow Shields as Primrose Everdeen. I don’t know who she is, but that is picture perfect casting.

So, here it is for your visual inspection. What do you think? How did it compare with the way you’d imagined it while reading the novel?

Director: Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit)

Marvel? I dont remember him from the books.

Jim,

The boy from District 1, I think. Glimmer's counterpart. She only learns his name long after his death.

Oh god, everything to do with Rue is going to kill me deader than dead.

Posted by: twig at May 11, 2011 11:08 AM

THE perfect picture of Woody Harrelson.

As for Jennifer Lawrence, let me reduce her down to casual-internet-comment speak: goddamn sometime that girl hawt, sometime that girl meh.

Always great actress though. In the one film I seen her in.

Posted by: zeke the pig at May 11, 2011 11:17 AM

So Marvel is played by the son of Dennis "Take Me Now" Quaid and Meg Ryan. You can totally see it.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at May 11, 2011 11:19 AM

I wonder who will be the kids from District two? Cato and what's her face? And yeah Twig...Rue is going to end me. The girl who was cast is so cute.

Posted by: Julie at May 11, 2011 11:19 AM

Funny. They don't look particularly hungry.

Posted by: The Wanderer at May 11, 2011 11:20 AM

Oh, thank god. No RDJ as Haymitch. Now I can happily ignore all things Hunger Games related. Aaah. Thanks, Pajiba!

Posted by: Samantha at May 11, 2011 11:21 AM

I imagined Katniss to be more petite, like the girl in Hanna and Peeta to be bigger in size. Woody Harrelson is ok but I imagined Bill Campbell as Haymitch. Also, who will play the president?

Posted by: kerokan at May 11, 2011 11:26 AM

Can we get a check on which side of Quaid this young'un Jackyboy comes from?

He looks like he might think there are ninjas in the closet sent by the Hollywood movers and shakers...

Posted by: D-Day at May 11, 2011 11:31 AM

D-Day,, he's the son of Dennis and Meg Ryan. So... a hodgepodge of possibilities there.

They still have to cast Cinna and then the main cast should be pretty much set.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at May 11, 2011 11:41 AM

I pictured Haymitch as a bit older. While reading the series I had Rip Torn in my mind for some reason.

Posted by: Brwnt at May 11, 2011 11:41 AM

don't know anything about this book or series. could care less...but i care enough to post this. what a world of contradictions we live in!

is this like harry potter? i couldn't get farther than fifty pages on the first one and gave up. lots better stuff out there. ursula k. leguin's stuff comes to mind. why not do a good job on that source material instead of this crap?

Posted by: splinter at May 11, 2011 11:42 AM

Someone airbrushed the SHIT out of Willow Shields' eyebrows. Seriously, look at that same picture on her IMDB page - that young lass has a unibrow that many middle-aged Jewish men would envy.

an unholy crapload of very beatiful people.

Posted by: Lord-ninja at May 11, 2011 11:52 AM

So.....this has nothing to do with Game of Thrones, then? These are separate things? Ok, good to know.

Also, who is this Willow Shields child? And why are her eyes SO ENORMOUS?! They're kind of terrifying.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 12:03 PM

Those Hemsworth boys sure bring the man-pretty.

Posted by: Drake at May 11, 2011 12:18 PM

Man, they really need to cast Sopie Turner who plays Sansa on Game of Thrones as Foxface. That's all I could think about during the pilot was that she should be Foxface http://weheartit.com/tag/sansa%20stark

Posted by: Sunday Girl at May 11, 2011 12:27 PM

No Cinna yet though. I say Alan Cumming would be pretty great.

Posted by: Skyler Durden at May 11, 2011 12:56 PM

From what I understand a lot of the other tributes will be played by stunt people since they have little to no speaking lines. I find this to be interesting if it is true.

Posted by: Nimue516 at May 11, 2011 12:58 PM

Skyler,

I vote Tim Gunn.

Posted by: twig at May 11, 2011 1:10 PM

Yeah, Woody was not even close to my short list for Haymitch. Or my list at all. He's too playful - I need a harder edge to my Haymitch. Makes his compassion that much better later. Still think Hugh Laurie would have been perfect.

Posted by: KatSings at May 11, 2011 1:25 PM

Yeah, we still need Cinna and President Snow. But so far I like the cast.

Posted by: TylerDFC at May 11, 2011 1:25 PM

@ Skylar-
Alan Cummings as Cinna would be exquisite. I, for one, am very happy to see Woody Harrelson is a part of this- I have been oddly obsessed with him since Natural Born Killers (I do not want to know what that says about me...)

Posted by: BalladofMaxwellDemon at May 11, 2011 2:12 PM

While I absolutely adore Allan Cumming.... isn't Cinna supposed to be super young. Like early twenties?
Definitely no older than 30.

Posted by: DominaNefret at May 11, 2011 3:04 PM

Someone airbrushed the SHIT out of Willow Shields' eyebrows. Seriously, look at that same picture on her IMDB page - that young lass has a unibrow that many middle-aged Jewish men would envy.

Whoa. They also blue'd her eyes. I'd imagine this is some kind of fan imagining of her as Prim.

Posted by: Amanda6 at May 11, 2011 3:46 PM

For some reason I pictured Haymitch as older, shorter and heavier. Not fat so much as a beer belly I guess.

Posted by: Luciana at May 11, 2011 9:30 PM

My only issue is that neanderthal Hemsworth. Seriously he looks like Channing "potato face" Tatums younger brother. And whoooo daumn are those some ears.

Posted by: E-Money at May 12, 2011 6:56 AM

Why does everyone have a funny name? The characters and the actors.

RE Willow: Wow, they really did erase mega hair and change eye colors. It's the same pic. Are you thinking Mom was a Buffy fan?

Posted by: BWeaves at May 12, 2011 9:59 AM

When I was reading the books I always kind of pictured Brendan Gleeson as Haymitch, not really sure why. I think that Woody Harrelson is an outstanding pick, though and I'm really interested to see who they cast as Cinna.

Posted by: Even Stevens at May 12, 2011 12:53 PM

This may be stupid but I always imagined William Shattner for Caeasr although I do like Stanley Tucci and think he will do great.

Posted by: Eric at May 27, 2011 2:27 PM

Don't forget Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.
@Luciana, that is totally how I imagined Haymitch too. Portly, too comfortable with his retirement. More like Zero Mostel.

Posted by: Empress of All the Russias at May 31, 2011 3:21 PM

Yeah, Lenny Kravitz is missing here. Of course, I wish he were actually NOT on this cast list, but maybe that's just me (I don't think it's just me).

Posted by: KatSings at May 31, 2011 3:29 PM

Sutherland is great for this. I like Kravitz as Cinna too, except that I did imagine Cinna a bit younger. But I guess since the whole thing is skewing older, it's to be expected.

Posted by: Amanda6 at May 31, 2011 5:50 PM

It's not just you, KatSings. I'm really hoping Kravitz will surprise us all, because I'm not expecting much.

Sutherland is an excellent choice for Snow. He can do creepy/menacing very well.
