Ooooooooh. Pretty

Here’s the first image of Naomi Watts as Marilyn Monroe, taken of a teaser poster over at Cannes. The speculation is that it came from a fitting or a screen test. It appears as though Andrew Dominick is trying to get his Monroe biopic, Blonde, out in front of Michelle Willliams’ version. I say: The world is big enough for two Monroe biopics, as long as talent like Watts and Williams are attached.

Shiny.

She's awful pretty, yes. But she's seriously lacking in the boob department. How are you gonna play Marilyn Monroe without an awesome set of knockers?

Posted by: mandasarah at May 18, 2010 10:53 AM

Seriously. Plus, isn't she awfully skinny to play Marilyn? On the other hand, she is a pretty good actress. I guess they could pad her up a bit. Not that they will.

I think Michelle Williams is actually the better choice for this role. A spectacular choice actually.

Tiny Naomi Watts as boobilicious Marilyn Monroe? Not really buying it, but whatever...

Posted by: Slash at May 18, 2010 11:10 AM

Show of hands for those who think another Marilyn Monroe biopic is unnecessary.

Sorry butz I'm not seeing Marilyn there a'tall. Pretty make-up, nice
wig and snazzy photograph-ing though. What was called for was a taller, curvier, more Norma Jean-ish type actress. Michelle Williams is even smaller.
Hurrumph. We're unimpressed over here.
:-P

Forgot to mention. I'm *totally* seeing Keira Knightly lips / eyes in that
shot up there. Jsut like that still from that James Macalhawtness movie. Atonement? Dead ringer.

Posted by: Ms MoMo at May 18, 2010 11:29 AM

Waaaaay too skinny. Marilyn was a size 12, not size negative 2. If you're gonna play her play her right.

Posted by: citizen_cris at May 18, 2010 11:52 AM

Much love for Naomi Watts over here, but I'm of the opinion that everyone else is. She's kinda skinny to be playing Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn's dressmaker's measurements were 35-22-35. I doubt Naomi is close to that in the boobage and hippage.

Posted by: stardust at May 18, 2010 12:14 PM

Pretty yes. Monroe? Not so much.

Posted by: EricD at May 18, 2010 12:19 PM

Looks far more Tippi Hedren than Marilyn.

Posted by: figgy at May 18, 2010 12:20 PM

Naomi's gorgeous obviously, but nothing like Marilyn. Clearly she's too thin and she wouldn't have the right shape even with added pounds. Marilyn actually wasn't a big girl, she was relatively petite. But she did have killer curves. Naomi does not, and it doesn't appear they've padded her out. But the bigger problem is her face is NOTHING like Marilyn's. I don't get Marilyn from that picture at all. Normally I don't really care whether an actor looks like the person they are playing so long as they have some talent, but I think it's a big problem when dealing with someone who's image is so iconic.

Still, I love the director and it sounds interesting.

Posted by: KateMC at May 18, 2010 12:23 PM

yeah, Naomi Watts is too thin.
Good actress, though; maybe she could do the reverse of what Christian Bale did for 'the Mechanic', & eat lots of pasta & ice cream.

One actress who's a bit on the heavy side & amazingly sexy (totally my type, anyway) is Cynthia Ettinger - especially how she looked in 'Carnivale'. She was also part of Langrishe's theatre troupe in S3 of 'Deadwood'.

But she'd be too old by now (45ish) to play Marilyn. (Naomi Watts is past 40 too, isn't she?)

For Christ sake someone please get this woman a burger, I haven’t seen a woman this skinny since Treblinka.

Posted by: Pookie at May 18, 2010 12:55 PM

Ummm. No. I have never been interested in Marilyn Monroe in the first place, but the one thing about her that I KNOW is that she was not a waif. Come ON Hollywood. Is there NO ONE with T&A that can play this part? Really?

ScarJo.

*runs*

Posted by: stardust at May 18, 2010 1:49 PM

stardust, I thought the same thing. Also I found myself what Christina Hendricks would look like as a blonde...

Posted by: HB at May 18, 2010 2:57 PM

It's too bad an Anna Nicole Smith version of a Marilyn Monroe biopic never materialized.

...too soon?

Posted by: whatBENwatches at May 18, 2010 3:30 PM

Dude please don't break my balls today.

Can we break your balls tomorrow?

Posted by: MM at May 18, 2010 4:05 PM

I'm on the same boat as stardust and HB. My first thought was Scar Jo, then, nahhhh. My next thought was Christina Hendricks, which I think would be spot on. She's got the body, the swagger, and the looks. Much more than Naomi.

Posted by: dorkydragon at May 18, 2010 4:14 PM

Good call, oskar. Ettinger was great in Carnivale and would have made a great Marilyn, I bet.

Looks-wise I agree with whatBENwatches said about Anna Nichole, although she couldn't act worth a damn and therefore the movie would have been painful to sit through.

And io, I tried to search for a number on how many biopics have been done about her, but can't give a definitive number....and now my furnace is making funny noises so I have to go....

That ain't MM up there.

i have a feeling michelle williams is gonna kill it as marilyn. when i first heard about it i thought to myself oh what an inspired casting idea. naomi as marilyn seems a bit like cate as hepburn: apt, qualified, admirable, but no goosebumps there and in the end goosebumps are what it's all about.

Posted by: lionel bitchie at May 18, 2010 7:14 PM

She looks like Kim Cattrall as Samantha doing Marilyn- too overdone. I love Naomi Watts but this is not right at all.
