On the 20th Anniversary of 'The X-Files,' Gillian Anderson Thanks David Duchovny For Those Speedos

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | September 11, 2013 | Comments ()

Yesterday was the 20th Anniversary of the debut of The X-Files, which is just insane. It was the second show I ever developed a real obsession for (after “The Wonder Years”) and the second show that had kooky Kool-Aid that we could all take sips from (Twin Peaks, as some recall, came first). Yes, the conspiracy premise behind the show was ultimately a letdown, but it primed many of us for “Lost” over a decade later. So, thanks for that, Chris Carter.

On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary, Gillian Anderson penned a very sweet note to all the fans, to Chris Carter, and to David Duchovny, and mostly what it did was to make many of us feel old. Really? I cannot fathom the thought that people who grew up on The X-Files are now introducing it to their children.

You gotta appreciate the call-out to Duchovny’s speedos, too, which were the second most horrifying thing of The X-Files run after the Peacock family.

The other guy in the "speedo" picture played Gardiner on Continuum.

I've been marathoning the X-files during feeds/settle/holy hell babies take up a lot of time doing very little. Aside from just enjoying the ride, and pausing every now and then to marvel at how gorgeous Anderson is (Duchovney, I've always drooled over), I've started a little game for all the guest stars - 'Why, hello there, now famous actor.'

    So far, I've spotted:
Giovani Ribisi and Jack Black as Lightning Rod Dude and Lighting Rod Dude's Friend. Black died.
Octavia Spector as a nurse. She died.
Ryan Reynolds as a high school jock. He died before the opening credits.
Bryan Cranston as The Mulder-Kidnapping 'Drive' guy. He died. I noticed that Vince Gilligan wrote that episode, which tickled me.

Brad Douriff as a creepy psychic on death row. He died.
Seth Green as a Rebellious Teen Who helps Mulder (Stoner Edition). He lives.

Felicity Huffman as a scientist in that arctic episode where Mulder reminds everybody that it's cold before he takes off his pants. She lives, barely.
Aaron Paul as 'Air Captain Winky' and Jane Lynch as the principal/mother/bug lady. They both live, although Paul ends up covered in spider webs.

Then there were all the long-term/already famous stars, like Jodie Foster, Bruce Campbell, Burt Reynolds, Terry O'Quinn and James Picken Jr, who I couldn't recognise at first, and then yelled 'Chief!' so loud I scared the shit out of both the cat and the baby.

Speaking of time travelers, Gillian - your ageless self can still call me anytime. David can come too.

We just turned our teenage kids on to it this summer and spent the evenings of our vacation in the mountains in a X-Files Marathon/popcorn coma.

Netflix also offers Malcolm in the Middle, My Name is Earl, and Freaks and Geeks for the uninitiated.

...and then I just wrote "Mrs. Janet Mulder" about 300 times.

    I want to believe.

I am an original Phile and have been feeling nostalgic over the old Usenet boards, terrible (and excellent) fanfic, the parsing of the mythology (before we realized CC had no idea where he was going), and the best (Pusher! Clyde Bruckman! Jose Chung!) and worst (killer kitties!) of the eps. Thanks to my first and last obsessive fandom; I met some great friends and filled my brain with trivia. Thanks to fan videos, there are now some songs I can't hear without seeing Mulder and Scully and willing them to DO IT ALREADY. :-) Thanks to Vince Gilligan, I know what good television writing is. Good times.

I never posted (I was on the OS, though), but I went back to the usenet group a few weeks ago. Someone had bumped up a thread from 1996 and I got a little excited looking at the att.net and netcom addresses. That was a different world!

The Peacock family taught me the phrase "War of Northern Aggression."

No, it's fine. She works a lot in the U.K., and when driving they overtake on the right.

  • Maguita NYC

I am in a state of mild agitation right now, for I need to upvote-downvote your comment so badly.

  • kushiro -

Go ahead and downvote if it will help your mood. I won't mind. It's a terrible joke.

  • Maguita NYC

It was beyond my control, I upvoted it while typing downvote. I just can't.

  • Wigamer

    I know.

  • Scully

"Sorry, nobody down here but the FBI's most unwanted."

    Never forget.

  • Mrs. Julien

"This is a classic case of demon fetal harvesting."

I liked how the conspiracy wrapped up in Season 6, although the movie was a disappointment. Would love to rewatch the show some day..at least the first 5 1/2 seasons or so.

  • Wigamer

Why? Why? I had (I thought) successfully put the inbred-dude-under-the-bed thing out of my mind. I thought I was going to get to see some Hot Mulder. That was just mean.

  • Professor Sara

Correction: That's an inbred LADY under the bed.

  • Wigamer

Oh...it was the mom, right? See, I had shoved all of that waaaay down. *shudder*

  • Professor Sara

Mother ... lover ... she's all those things.

  • Maguita NYC

Mother...effers... They were all those things too. Eurgh.

  • Wigamer

    Too many of THOSE THINGS!
*Heads back to yesterday's post with the Fassbender picture*

  • emmalita

I know what I'm getting you for your birthday.

  • Maguita NYC

Wigamer's bday is coming soon? I hope it is written in my calendar somewhere?!

And that Fassbender is one dirty Mofo however you look at it Wigamer. So... back to square one. Although admittedly, he has a nicer, kinkier smile.

  • Maguita NYC

    Never Forget.

Dana Scully is one classy lady, and Fox Mulder is still hot in his swimsuits, no matter how long or short they may be.

I will be rewatching the best of the series, and yes the freakiest, in celebration of the X-Files anniversary over the week-end.

Classy is eggzaktlee the word that came to mind.
