Oh You'll Never See My Shade or Hear the Sound of My Feet

Over the past week or so, details on Season 4 of True Blood are seeping out like dead vampire guts, so we may as well get involved. I can’t stand feeling left out.

One would suppose the title alone would be enough warning, but just in case some of you clicked the link without reading or you’re drunk, stoned or on the meths again: ****Spoileriffic Stuff Lies Ahead**** Also be warned that these spoilers involve Charlaine Harris’ book series as well and that people love to post book spoilers in the comments. Onward.

Alan Ball said at the end of the third season that the fourth would be the season of the witch, which would indicate that there’s plenty Pretty Jesus to go around so let’s all give a little “Amen” to that. Although Ball has been following the books pretty loosely, even mixing them within a season, he did specifically reference Hallow Stonebrook (who is featured in Book 4, Dead to the World). I’ve only just started Dead to the World which begins with Eric hiding out at Sookie’s place and apparently Kristin Bauer (Pam) has said that Eric’s memory loss may indeed play out on the show. Of Alexander Skarsgård, Bauer said, He is very funny. A lot of people didn’t see him in Zoolander and [don’t] know how funny he can be. I would love for him to do that in his vampire character.” Indeed, I’d love Eric’s sense of humor (among other things) to be explored.

Entertainment Weekly has gotten the goods on several new characters who’ve been mapped out: Queen Mab, who presumably rules over something in faerie land; Marni (Hallow), a lousy palm-reader who becomes possessed by a witch; Andy Bellefleur’s sister, Portia; Naomi, a cage-fighter and a “Real Housewives type” named Suzanne McKittrick, who is possibly connected to the shape-shifting gang.

And finally, Sam Trammel (Sam Merlotte) had this to say about his character, “I know that they’re going to do some really interesting stuff with shapeshifting that we haven’t done yet. Yeah. And we’re going to kind of look into the myth of the shapeshifter and what it is and the community or non-community in Bon Temps…”

Truth be told, none of this new stuff sounds terribly compelling, save the Eric storyline. Season 3 was so up and down, I’m not nearly as excited as I was at the end of Season 2 but I’ve still got some hope for the main characters. Alan Ball needs to realize that the core characters should be the main focus of the show and that we don’t need fifty kazillion new people to track - we just need a few good storylines with good characters/actors. I don’t mind the witch business (Pretty Jesus!) but bringing them into the mix shouldn’t take over or completely refract the prevailing light…er…dark.

I can't read this, because I still haven't seen season two or three.

I did, however, want to offer kudos on the "Moon Over Bourbon Street" reference. Dream Of The Blue Turtles has always been a perfect album to me.

Agreed. I wasn't that into the show this year, and okay, so part of that was I didn't give a rat's ass about the fairyland BS, but another part was they made a point of updating you on every single character every single week, so not even the interesting plotlines got the time they deserved.

I mean, Christ almighty, who among us wouldn't trade the "Jason is bored at work" montage for more of Russell Edgington? Paperclip limbo up my ass, Stackhouse.

Posted by: Melodie at October 27, 2010 5:28 PM

I disagree, Melodie. There are a lot of scenes I would trade for more Russell Edgington, but "Jason is bored at work" is not one of them.

Also, more Jason Stackhouse: Shirtless Traffic Cop would be nice.

Darth, by the time you catch up the show will be off air.

Thanks - I like it a lot myself.

There's a hot naked shower GIF of Skarsgård from Zoolander that's out there somewhere. I would post it if I could. It's hot and naked and soapy and naked and . . . .

*monitor steams up*

For me, hands down, there will never be a Season as deliciouly good as Season One. It is and always will be "the" one that is the best. With that being said, and me NOT BEING a fan of those crappily written novels, I love what Alan Ball and his writing staff is doing with Charlaine's "material". After Book Nine I swore I'd never read any more of Charlaine's trash and I will stick to that and those of you who might be disgruntled with what Alan Ball and his writing staff is turning out have the right to stop watching the series. I get so tired of all the complaining when in fact, True Blood is a fabulous series. Thank God Alan kept Lafayette alive in the series and didn't kill him off like Charlaine did in her novels and then there is Jessica who is an Alan Ball creation and Jessica has added so much fun to the show. If there are those of you out there that are so hung up on the novels that you can't enjoy the series because the series doesn't closely follow the novels, then stop watching and stop bitching. I don't recall Alan Ball ever stating that he was going to create the series exactly as the novels are written - and I am so glad that he didn't. I don't like the novels so I quit purchasing them and there are those of you out there who don't like the series so don't watch it.

Posted by: Trubie at October 27, 2010 10:05 PM

Wow, Trubie: Have you looked up the definition of "hypocrite" lately?

"If there are those of you out there that are so hung up on the novels that you can't enjoy the series because the series doesn't closely follow the novels, then stop watching and stop bitching."

...And all that preceded and followed by YOU bitching about the books...AND YOU BOUGHT NINE OF THEM!

Sorry I had to spell it out, but I really wasn't sure you would know the word of the day.

I definitely have lowered expectations for the next season. Hopefully it'll be better than the last, but none of these details sound particularly promising. To add to the complaint about too many new characters, I think it's made worse by the lack of interaction between the core characters. Beyond some of them being related, why the fuck are any of them still friends with each other? And I'd really enjoy it if they got rid of Arlene.

Posted by: Uda at October 27, 2010 10:55 PM

But Uda: Then you'd miss the big reveal where Arlene has been a warlord alien from the planet Krungst 7, pulling the strings of the entire cast all along!

Posted by: Vince Noir at October 28, 2010 12:48 AM

Season 1 was great - we were learning about these new vampire guys, then discovered that Sam was a shapeshifter and that was fine.
Then came Season 2 with the maenad and that was fine too. But Season 3 really let us have it: werevolves, werepanthers, fairies, witches. Come the fuck on - werepanthers? What is that? If Easter Bunny and Toothfairy were to appear in S4, I wouldn't bat an eye
Alan Ball, please concentrate on your core characters. Please?

Posted by: astounded at October 28, 2010 3:19 AM

Come the fuck on - werepanthers? What is that?

Sounds kinda like Harris or Ball (or both) are mining Laurel K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series for ideas.

Posted by: Rykker at October 28, 2010 5:43 AM

My hopes for next season: a jump ahead in time so that more than a couple of weeks have passed since the pilot; more emphasis on the core characters; a limited number of storylines (if they go for the witches, we already know Sookie, Eric, Pam, Jesus, Lafayette and Holly will be involved, and it shouldn't be too hard to get some of the others involved too); less "whatever, Sookie!" moments.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath.

Posted by: Thijs at October 28, 2010 5:43 AM

Aww, shit, Vince Noir, I take it back. That would be amaaaaazing! I'll keep that in mind when the new season starts. She just might become my favorite character now. I guess this means her baby will be alien/serial killer offspring. That will show those fucking werepanthers!

Posted by: Uda at October 28, 2010 7:20 AM

Every year Alan Ball says that he's going to follow the books more closely, and then he never does! That's what bothers me the most.

He actually, REALLY needs to follow the books more. I'm all for more in the show when it comes to plot and character development, but Jesus on toast, WTF is he doing?

The fourth book as a very specific storyline that sort of continues through later books. Of course it needs to be fleshed out, but there's only so much you can do until the whole story dissolves.

And I say it all the time...but can we please have Bubba? Please, please, please!?

Posted by: Candee at October 28, 2010 10:23 AM

"Truth be told, none of this new stuff sounds terribly compelling, save the Eric storyline."

Eric's storyline is the most compelling. And his (Alex) acting is superb.
He really is the best of True Blood and is what makes the show worth watching.

Charlaine is the "True Maker" of all these main characters.

Posted by: WTHBeehl at October 28, 2010 9:36 PM

WTHBeehi: Yes, Mr. Skarsgard owns the most compelling role in the show, but I think that Sookie rivaled him in the books. And that is the tragedy; Sookie has been made practically obsolete in the show.

----BOOK SPOILERS---- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Sookie and Barry the Bellboy rescue survivors of the massive hotel bombing by holding hands and thus exponentially increasing their power (Willow and Tara in "Hush," anyone?") we gained a whole new dimension of the part-fae thing.

Sookie's critical involvement in the werewolf political fightng match for power in the werewolf community for power? Quinn?

I feel like Sookie has been downgraded and rendered just obsolete in this world, where she might have played some critical roles. (Shit, the show is practically at Book 9 already as far as exposition, and Sookie barely matters anymore.)

When was the last time we saw Sookie's telepathy be used for anything useful since freakin Season 1? It's almost like the writers ignored it all together. That is not a book/TV complaint...I just want some consistency in the writing of the show!

[ie...let's hear some voices in Sook's head from time to time. A huge part of her character as established in the books and Season 1 is that she is constantly haunted by the thoughts of humans and shifters. I can't recall a single instance of Sookie hearing the thoughts of others in Season 3. Lame. Guess her "curse" is just when it is convenient to the script.

Posted by: Vince Noir at October 28, 2010 11:56 PM

Did anyone else think the Hotshot storyline was on the main factors to drag down season three? In the books, Calvin and the whole Hotshot neighborhood was mysterious but also intriguing.

They pretty much cut the Calvin/Sookie relationship which was creepy but sweet too, almost turning into a father figure for Sook. I know they need something to do with Jason too but him standing around a bunch of dirty people - I don't know.

We all know Russell ain't met the true death yet either. Can't wait for him to emerge from the concrete prison.

Hope Bill kicks the Queen's ass. In Book 4 Sookie also enters the Were world of Alcide which was done really well.
