Nucky Thompson Is the Bigger Fish

Steve Buscemi is a funny guy. He could just as easily be a sniveling wimp getting sand kicked in his face at the beach, as he could be a powerful politician and gangster running a town. There have even been moments when I’ve seen something attractive about him, and that’s saying something because dude is an odd duck. But he’s a hell of an actor and thoroughly convincing as the big fish in Terence Winter (“The Sopranos”) and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Boardwalk Empire”.

The show is set in 1920s Atlantic City, when alcohol became illegal and those in the know went underground. Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson is the corrupt town Treasurer whose sideline as a mobster allows him to live like a king. But he runs into trouble when his former protege, Jimmy (Michael Pitt) returns from war, wanting to get his piece of the action and inadvertently stirring up the Feds.

HBO has picked up 12 episodes of the show for fall 2010. “Boardwalk Empire” stars Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, Michael K. Williams, Shea Whigham, Gretchen Mol, Paz de la Huerta and Dabney Coleman.

All in?

Why the hell not? Solid cast, solid premise. Dabney Coleman... I guess he's not dead.

All. Fuckin. In.
I was watching "I Know It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale" the other day and Buscemi is interviewed about him and it made me more excited for this show and sadder for the loss of John Cazale.

Also: get to it Pajiba, that would be a nice little documentary to review here.

Running the promo for Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones right before the screen went red and filled up with the many warnings regarding the adult content in the True Blood premiere just made me so very happy. The season premiere was just the icing on my "quivering with antici...pation" cake.

Kelly Macdonald has the life I want. She's awesome, she's Scottish, she's married to Travis's Dougie Payne, and if you've seen the BBC State of Play, she says "murder" in a really great way, like "MUR dur." I shall watch this.

Posted by: Courtney at June 14, 2010 5:18 PM

I want to watch this. But Michael Pitt.
Michael Pitt and his stupid face can go and eat a bag of dicks.

Don't ask me to explain why.
Remember the irrational hatred thread?
He is one of mine. I fucking hate this fucking guy and his stupid moon chin and his fucking pretention and he NEVER WASHES HIS HAIR AND I DONT CARE HOW INDIE YOU ARE MICHAEL YOU ARE NOT INDEPENDENT FROM HYGIENE YOU FUCKING PRICK!! TAKE A SHOWER!!!!!!!!

Also, I apologise if that outburst offends any one, specially fans of Pitt.

Like I said, I cant rationalise it, he just rubs me eight different ways of wrong.

Posted by: Nadine at June 14, 2010 5:37 PM

I used to think Michael Pitt was hot, Nadine. And I have to admit, there's a certain something about him that I still find very attractive. But you're right, he's greasy, and those huge fucking eyes are just creepy. I'd probably still bag him, but I'd feel super ashamed about it later.

Posted by: Kate the Great at June 14, 2010 5:37 PM

Hehehee, Kate, that is the most honest and best way I've heard it put.

Posted by: Nadine at June 14, 2010 5:46 PM

Sold on the song over the trailer alone. Goddamn that's a great tune.

I make it a point never to feel ashamed about my sexual exploits. Then again, I've had chlamydia twice (worth it).

Posted by: superasente at June 14, 2010 7:13 PM

No mention of Michael Shannon being in this?

Because Michael Shannon is also in this. And he's awesome.

best ever.

i saw the preview for this last night before true blood and i thought "wow that looks good" and then i saw alexander skarsgard's BARE FUCKING HOT ASS and my brain fell out and my vagina prolapsed.

so, i'm glad i read this post because it reminded me how great i thought the show looked before i got skarsgarded.

Ditto on best ever. Try not to shoot your EE load too early in the week, though!

Also, from Rescue Me:

Tommy: I think she might have given me the Big C.

Kenny: Cancer's the Big C. Chlamydia is little c.

Michael Shannon is the main draw for me.

Posted by: Mac at June 14, 2010 9:06 PM

boardwalk empire? is the monopoly movie we kept hearing about?

Posted by: idleprimate at June 14, 2010 10:00 PM

k, now actually watched the trailer, am very very on board, we need a new genre name, one with teeth, for period piece organized crime/corruption tales that are also character pieces and filled with fucking cool actors instead of one star and a bunch of extras. maybe this will be deadwood set in atlanta 1920's.

Posted by: idleprimate at June 14, 2010 10:05 PM

it sure doesnt hurt having michael shannon in there. he isnt featured to high in the credits on imdb, but he was prominent in the trailer

Posted by: idleprimate at June 14, 2010 10:08 PM

Been anticipating this for a while now. Terence Winter wrote some of the best episodes of The Sopranos and Scorsese is fucking Scorsese. Solid cast, mafia setting, this thing can't go wrong.

@Kate the Great
I had the opposite effect from him. I used to hate Michael Pitt and now I'd definitely bag him. I've never really noticed his questionable hygiene.

Also I've been seeing promos for Boardwalk Empire for quite some time, but I heard of it long before. The mere mention of Steve Buscemi had me on board.

Posted by: Uda at June 14, 2010 11:08 PM

See I REALLY want to love this and will be watching it...but I'm pretty certain my immediate RAAARGH reaction to Pitt will make it hard for me to enjoy it and that makes me sad cos it looks the tits and Buscemi in pin stripes is...I'll be honest here guys , it's arousing.

There. It's said now. Out there.

For YOU to deal with.

It warms my heart to know I am not the only one with an irrational hatred of Michael Pitt.

Posted by: irrational at June 15, 2010 7:54 AM

I just imdbed this Michael Pitts to see what all the fuss is about. At first glance I was “oh! that’s Angel’s son”; on closer inspection, my reaction changed to “ewww dude, take a shower”. (Also, definitely not Angel’s son.)

He’s got nice lips though. I’ll give him credit for that.

Posted by: Scully at June 15, 2010 8:49 AM

Scully, those nice lips aren't so pretty when you her his snivelly, whiny little voice. He's so oily and emo, I want to punch him in the face. And then make sweet love to him. And then take the hottest shower I can stand.

Superasente, the deadly diseases might not be as common as chlamydia, but you can catch them the same goddamned way. Be more careful. LISTEN TO YOUR AUNTIE KATE.

Posted by: Kate the Great at June 15, 2010 9:00 AM

HAHAHAH! This is the best thread ever.

I am completely in love with Michael Pitt. (Nadine, why are you and I always on the EXACT OPPOSITE PAGE with these things?!) Dirt and emo-ness and whiny voice and all. Yep.

However, I am also in love with Steve Buscemi and Michael Shannon, and I am SO VERY ALL IN for this, because it looks fantastic. However, I still will not pay an additional $20/month on top of my already outrageous cable bill for HBO, so I guess I am ALL OUT. DAMN YOU, CABLEVISION.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 15, 2010 11:09 AM

Every time I see Michael Pitt, I just want to tear my clothes off and throw myself at him. I don't get it, but holy shit that man makes me feel like a cat in heat.

Empirically, he's odd looking and a little crazy. But damned if I wouldn't fuck him in a heartbeat given the chance. We could always shower together.

What are some really good music players for kids? My cousin is 5 yoa and for christmas I need to buy her a mp3 player, she loves my nano but I think it becomes difficult for her to apply it. Are there any good ones for kids?
