I Like It When You Call Me Big Poppa

No. Really. Call Me Big Poppa / Dustin Rowles

Biggie. Biggie Smalls. Big Poppa. Frank White. The Notorious B.I.G. Christopher Wallace had more nicknames than Puff Daddy. And his music was sexist. And violent. But it was catchy, so he gets a free pass (kind of). Actually, Biggie was immensely talented, a hip-hop poet, who led an amazingly fascinating life and channeled his difficulties into music. He basically made Puff Daddy. And he was a huge figure in the East Coast / West Coast feud, which ultimately cost him his life.

It’s a pretty compelling life story, and excellent fodder for a movie, if it’s done right. It’s hard to know what to make of it from the teaser trailer below, though it’s cool to hear the music again. Notorious also has a decent cast: Angela Basset as Biggie’s mom, Derek Luke as Puff Daddy, and Anthony Mackie as Tupac. Biggie is played by a relative unknown, Wayne Barrow, and he at least looks the part. The choice of director, George Tilman Jr. (Men of Honor, Soul Food) doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, but I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. For now.

Check out the teaser:

This could have potential as long a Puffy P. Diddy Jiffy Pop doesn't get anywhere near it.

Do only true artists die young/tragically? Or do we just not hear or care about the lesser lights? I mean, I think I would totally remember if some popular but talentless cunk like Dane Cook was taken "too soon."

I've been a fan since my big brother introduced me to Biggie around when Ready to Die first came out. No storytelling in hip-hop quite like him except maybe BIG L who was also killed. So i will probably see this. Puffy made his death more tragic with that shitty ass remake of that shitty ass Sting song.

BSlim and Rowles discussing the merits of Biggie Smalls, a conversation for the ages.

How much better would the world be if the gangsters that killed Biggie decided to go after Poof Drizzle instead? It's sad but true that in a lot of cases, the wrong people tend to die. John Lennon is gone, Yoko walks among us. That shit ain't right. Tupac is killed, Emo Phillips is still drawing breath. I don't want to get started about Nick Hogan getting out of jail and the other guy in a coma. Sometimes there are no answers to why things are as fucked up as they are.

I have a bias against Pulp Dookie. I've been a fan of Ciroc Vodka for years....now all of a sudden because he is in an ad for it, I get teased for following his lead. If he does any ads for Burger King...I may lose my mind.

Coincidentally, this movie comes out on my Birthday.
Happy Birthday to Mee? Well, I won't see it. I've got Daniel Radcliffe Schlong in lieu of seeing that for my birthday.

Dustin are you trying to put up some link to a new post about the American Psycho musical because it's linked to your Biggie post...? I heard about this on dlisted...

I absolutely love Biggie. The movie may leave something to be desired but it's an interesting story and at worst it'll be just okay. Oh and

I got that good dick, girl. You didn't know?

Sure it's a touch of "I am great. Broads are not as great." to it but it's hip-hop. It's par for the course. I don't listen to Biggie for enlightenment.

When did Christian Bale become a fat African-American man?

Can't you just see Biggie jamming to Duran Duran 'Notorious' dance team style??

I question your dedication to Sparkle Motion.

Who is playing Faith Evans? She was his wife after all.

I will watch it. Maybe not in the theaters, but I will watch.

When does the Tupac movie come out?

You know it will be.

Pff. The only song I've ever heard from this guy was the one Dr. Smoove used in that G.I. Joe video. That guy does the cleverest editing I've ever seen. You'd think G.I. Joe really was about hos. And how incredibly foul mouthed The Baroness was.

You should go look that up. Destro. Rapping.

"How was I to know that you would spread like mustard?"

Erm... Men of Honor and Soul Food were excellent movies.

And I had to play that trailer about 10 times, 'cuz the opening refrain to "Hypnotize" never fails to make me stand up and shake my badonkadonk.
