No on Star Wars, Yes on "V" Hiatus / Steven Lloyd Wilson

Trade News | October 28, 2009 | Comments (16)

Last week a completely unsubstantiated rumor started (presumably by Dustin, it’s well established at this point that all Hollywood rumors and scripts begin life in the primordial soup of his most cynical rants) hinting that George Lucas was planning another Star Wars trilogy. This time it would be in 3D! Look Hollywood, if I wanted to wear ugly glasses in order to watch a movie I wouldn’t have gotten laser eye surgery from that hobo with a laser pointer. Although 3D does sound just gimmicky enough to be a real George Lucas idea.

Lucas Films Head of Fan Relations Steve Sansweet demonstrated a refreshingly atypical attitude for an industry muckety-muck by genially explaining in a convention interview that the rumors were “ignorant and stupid” and that someone probably just made them up for a blog. Heh. He concluded by saying “you shouldn’t believe what you read on the internet.” You know, except for what he just said. Also: this sentence is in Spanish when you’re not looking at it.

“V” is not scheduled to come back on the air until March after it runs its first four episodes in November. That’s like scheduling the foreplay a week and a half before business time. Of course, the pilot introduces Alan Tudyk as a recurring character, so that might be enough to tide you over for the long cold months of winter, “American Idol,” and the Olympics.

Does anyone care for more Star Wars movies at this point? Anyone? Anyone?

4 episodes and then a 4 month delay ? This show must suck sooooo badly....

So in other words, record "V" but don't watch it until February? Got it!

This show must suck sooooo badly

That was already clear.

Lucasfilm had talked about a 3-D remaster of the original trilogy, which I wouldn't mind, but I haven't heard a thing on it for quite a while. I hadn't seen this particular rumor and was worried you meant the TV show wasn't gonna happen.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas decided to recreate Star Wars with puppets, marionettes or those plastic hand puppets that Burger Chef used to give out. 3-D is one of the better ideas. At least it would be cheesily true to the serial nature of the movies.

Don't get me started on the Olympics. You won't like it.

What's wrong with the Olympics? Sure beats that shit out of watching Glee.

Oh no he di'int!

*makes popcorn*

WTF?! Why did they hype V up so much at Comic Con if they were going to shit all over the fans like this? We've been waiting forever! This makes me think that something is terribly wrong with the script/special effects/acting or something. 4 episodes and then nothing until March. Someone really wants this to bomb.

Posted by: James at October 28, 2009 11:51 AM

@James

I think the problem with V is that everyone knows the damn story before it even airs.

We already know (avoiding spoilers here) what the aliens are thanks to the excellent '80's mini-series. Where can they go from here?

And if it is different in some way, then ABC has done a shiat job of explaining to us how it's going to be different and worth our time.

I don't even dislike "Glee". I've never watched it. There's no reason I'd want to. By this point I'm starting to be FURIOUSLY disinterested.

No. We have 2 things to get us through the long winter: LOST and 24. The rest is just periphery.

ABC shelving "V" until March means nothing to me. That network hasn't done right by a program since they launched LOST. Truly inept. Yep, still bitter "Invasion" had no ending and "Pushing Daisies" was cancelled. F you, Mouse.

Hasn't V gone on a production hiatus as well? Which means if the first 4 don't do well, they won't even make the rest, let alone air them . . .

Posted by: Lauren at October 28, 2009 3:59 PM

So they're going to air 4 eps of V and then shelve it till next year. I guess the networks learned nothing from the writers strike. If a show disappears for a couple of months chances are people are going forget all about it.

I'd add FNL and Chuck to add to Lost and 24.

Agreed on Invasion.

I think I literally squealed with delight when I saw the first promo for "V" the other day. Yeah, it was only the other day because I never watch ABC and I have been ignoring entertainment news for the last several months. But "V"! Wow, I remember sitting in my mom's lap as we watched that show.

My delighted squeal was short lived, however, as the promo, upon reflection, struck me as powerfully lame, and I recalled that it's on ABC. I think BSG showed us that the re-imagining of a show can lead to spectacular things, but I don't think ABC can do it. The main face of the Visitors, presumably the Diana character, also looked like she should be doing AT&T commercials, not posing as the insidiously alluring, charismatic alien leader that Jane Badler portrayed so well.
