No More Words

This trailer does exactly what a trailer should do, it sucks you in and makes you want to see the movie (without giving too much away). Who need words?

The clip has a little bit of “The Walking Dead” vibe (Love the quiet of that show) and even though barely any information is given, I’m already hooked. The Day is an upcoming thriller by Doug Aarniokoski, that follows a group of survivors of an apocalyptic event. Exactly what kind of peril they will be facing is unclear, but according to Twitch, the film is a cross between Red Dawn and The Road.

The Day stars Dominic Monaghan (I Sell the Dead, “Lost”), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men, Mother’s Day), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale, One Missed Call, “Moonlight”), Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism) and Cory Hardrict (Gran Torino) and there are hopes this will be the first in a series. Though this is Aarniokoski’s first directorial lead, he has served as second unit director on several films, including Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Resident Evil: Extinction and Takers.

I'm a sucker for post-rock in a trailer.

The song in the trailer is by Explosions in the Sky, one of my favorite bands. Its called "Yasmin the Light" for anyone who is interested.

I also came here to say:

Post-Rock
Explosions In The Sky

But, with the caveat that I am sick of hearing Explosions in trailers.. Because I am a post-rock nutter and have about 500 other post-rock songs I'd like to hear getting some international recognition.

And also, shot on a RED? Looks like it.

Okay.
Why the fuck is that chick wearing a dress?!

Well, it does look as dark and dingy as "The Road" and "Book of Eli" but it doesn't look at all interesting. I mean, half-naked girls with guns? Now, that's original, ain't it? Maybe it will be better when it's finished.

I loves me some Shannyn Sossamon. Always have. Always will.

I gotta admit, that's a pretty kickass trailer. No idea how good the movie will be, but I love trailers, especially early ones, that keep you in suspense. And the cast is surprisingly great -- actually, all the big-ish names are great actors who don't get enough work. (*cough*ShawnAshmore*cough*)

"Dominic Monaghan (I Sell the Dead, “Lost”)"

He doesn't have a slightly bigger credit than I Sell the Dead?

Also, I dig the visual style of this, and the locations, but what is it about a movie like this which makes it clearly look amateur?

I like it, the DOP and Director clearly have talent, yet it still feels like a B-movie. Is it the rack zooms and handheld? Then how does Scott make it look professional? What little tricks am I (and these guys) missing? Equipment? Perhaps more set dressing on some of those shots of a character screaming and shooting from a bare patch of grass? It's just one of those things where SOMETHING is missing, but I don't know what it is.

Oh, and this film looks like a shoe in to screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival, so I'll check it out there. Certainly an example of how a trailer should be made.

He doesn't have a slightly bigger credit than I Sell the Dead?

He played the hobbit, Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck, in the Peter Jackson-directed incarnation of The Lord of the Rings trilogy before taking-part in "LOST."

Speaking of awesome trailers, Pajiba should look into this Uruguayan horror film The Silent House (La Casa Muda). It claims to be the first horror movie done in one, 79 minute continuous take. The trailer steals from Texas Chainsaw Massacre but the film looks scary as shit.

The Road meets Red Dawn?
Looks more like Blair Witch Project meets Lord of the Flies (w/guns).

Posted by: Scott at December 7, 2010 10:39 PM

Jared, would you by any chance mean this trailer?

Posted by: TK at December 7, 2010 11:05 PM

I just came here to say that Godspeed You Black Emperor is way better than Explosions in the Sky.

P.S. Love the trailer.

Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale, One Missed Call, “Moonlight”)

Aaaand right there is where you lost me. She is a terrible actress and for some reason, rather than just ignore her non-talent, the sight of her makes me rage-y. No idea why but I cannot stand her (maybe she'll die in the first 10 minutes?)

Also, what exactly is post-rock?
