I Heard in the New Nightmare, Freddy Gets a Facelift to Look Like Bob Costas

One of the disadvantages to not working with studio publicists is that we miss out on all the cool set visits — it’s a disadvantage mostly for us, because visiting a set is a pretty nifty perk, although reading about a set visit can sometimes feel like reading a real-time review of someone brushing their teeth. Yesterday, a studio embargo broke, and something like 15 other movie blogs posted write-ups for their visits to the new Nightmare on Elm Street set (if you want to read one, the best is from Will Goss, who leaves out the boring stuff, and sticks to the quotes from producer Brad Fuller and Jackie Earle Haley).

Out of those set visit pieces came some new images from the movie, because it’s good to break up all that copy with some pretty studio-released pictures. We’re going to skip the copy part, and just bring you the images, starting with the movie poster, and then a few stills from the movie, which look a lot like stills you’d have found in the original. Is that good or bad?

The movie opens April 30th.

Bob Costas was a torchbearer up here in Vancouver for the Olympics, right outside my workplace, and we took some time off to go watch the torch relay. Bob posed for pictures while waiting for the torch to arrive, and as sure as the day is long, I said to a co-worker, "That guy's had some work done." True story. For real. I wouldn't make this shit up.

Looking good, I'm glad to hear scary Freddy is making a comeback, love Englund but silly Freddy is annoying.

My rabid Olympic watching is always punctuated by shouts of, "Shut up Bob Costas!"

I'm sorry but he's so damn smug.

And all of us should remember Freddy's favorite Bible verse: Suffer the little children, come unto me.

Didn't realize until right this second that Freddy Kruger was a lay Catholic priest. It makes sense though. Like the fact that he can never die, no matter how many times you think you've killed him.

Cannot wait!

Posters: Lame. (In my opinion.) They offer nothing new and reveal no distinct "take" on the material that would justify a remake.

Having seen the actual preview a couple of times now in the theater, this is my question: so, are we to believe that Freddy Krueger was, in fact, NOT guilty of molesting the children of Elm Street?

The way Jackie Earle Haley is running so frantically and pitifully to get away from the torch-bearing mob, and then once he's inside the warehouse, he says something to the effect of "What did I do?", indicating that he doesn't know why the parents are chasing him. Is he in fact innocent, and his evil and hatred derives from being wrongfully burned?

I don't remember this being addressed in the originals. All I remember is that the story gets told, that the parents burned Freddy because they thought he was a child molester. It doesn't indicate whether he actually WAS or not. Or am I just forgetting everything/not knowing what I'm talking about?

MM. I am pretty sure in the original he was guilty of his crimes, though I can't recall. I have heard this is definitely the case in the re-make.

I am sure Jackie Earl is all "What did I do?" because he's still trying to be in denial and/or is crazy or something. Remember, he's the bastard son of 100 maniacs, so it's likely he's got more than one screw loose.

Hmm... thanks for the info! So, their ploy of making it look like JEH/Freddy is innocent in the remake to suck me in and keep the movie in my mind worked! Right after the scene in the trailer, JEH probably turns around, his innocent face evaporates, he breaks into diabolical laughter and says, "Your children will need therapy until the end of time! Plus, you're all going to hell for murder, even if it is murder of a child molester!" Or something to that effect.

he's the bastard son of 100 maniacs

Hee!

That's 1,000 maniacs, folks.

I'm not likely to ever forget that movie scene as long as I live (go, Craig Wasson!).

Oopsie, a quick Internet search indicates that perhaps I did forget...One hundred maniacs it is.

In all versions, Freddy committed the molestations. It was clarified in Freddy's Nightmares, the badass anthology TV series, that he was acquitted in the criminal trial. The town gets all mob-y, chases him with torches and pitchforks, and burns him alive. Freddy swears revenge and becomes the dream killer. The remake is no different. It is never spelled out in the original, but that was the intent. Haley screaming "What did I do?" is very "But I was acquitted, that means you can't prove it," not "I was proven innocent because I did nothing."

From what Haley has been saying, the production company decided to keep some of the iconography of the series--the hat, the sweater, the glove, some of the more infamous deaths--and use them in completely different ways. The director didn't want to even go that far, but it was a nod at loyalty to the original film. At the very least, JEH is not playing Freddy as portrayed by Englund. He watched the first film and clips of the others to get a feel for the series then went a completely different direction. Haley didn't even know that Englund was the only Fredd because he wasn't a big fan of NoES.

He is big on letting the screenplay dictate his character. He's not a research everything, watch everything, and copy it exactly kind of actor. That's good. He's actually quite similar in technique to Englund which can only help.

Meh. Maybe if this were the ONLY remake in a sea of original screenplays I'd give it a shot, but I'm way past tired of this bullshit studio rehash assembly line, so at this point I really don't care how hard everyone worked on the movie, it's still a bullshit studio rehash and I'm just burnt out; I am absolutely no longer interested in wading through the 100 crap remakes to find the maybe one or two that are actually worth a damn. I've already seen Nightmare on Elm Street and I have no job, and sadly I don't think anyone will hire ME to "re-imagine" someone else's job, so I think I'll save my small amount of remaining leisure money for something new, if something new ever actually comes out again.

Jackie Earle Haley? Damn. Then I may have to see this, even though I'm no fan of the other Nightmare movies. At. All. Oh well...

I've been watching Human Target mostly for JEH (though it's also a stupidly fun show). He rocks. I have no idea why he has to wear the bad wig, but his Guerrero is awesome, even so.
