When All Else Fails, You Return To Your Roots

After the success of Alice in Wonderland, 3D inflation aside, Burton’s next project is going to be a full-length feature film version of his 1984 short Frankenweenie in 3D. I’m pretty excited for the prospect, because I’m hoping Burton won’t be able to use Helena Bonham Carter or Johnny Depp.

It’s totally going to be a low-budget vanity project for fun, which is just the sort of thing Burton should be doing. Like someone digging out old home movies, I’m sincerely hoping Burton rekindles his creative flame and finds that sick inspiration that brought us Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

And yes, I think there’s plenty of material to make Frankenweenie a full length feature. Is the 3D necessary? Well, no, but with the craftwork of Burton and Henry Selick, the final product gets that added dimension of creepiness. And besides, I just watched a short film about a bunch of hipsters in a park bitching about their relationships which was inexplicably in 3D, so fuck, this can’t possibly be worse.

I watched Frankenweenie over and over as a kid, and only recently found out that it was a Burton movie. I skipped Alice, but with Henry Selick aboard and the nostalgia factor, I'll go see this.

Henry Sellick is on board? Hooray! It's still a remake, but at least he's remaking something of his own this time, that's a step in the right direction.

I loved Frankenweenie as a kid. I still remember how awesome it was. And a remake (retooling?) shouldn't be too terrible if the original creative folks are back.

But if it involves Johnny Depp wearing a dog suit, I'm out.

Call me when "Frankenhooker" is redone in 3-D.

I just watched Frankenweenie on YouTube. BORING. Too long. It should have been a 5 minute long skit. And the acting was very wooden which was disappointing, especially considering that I've actually heard of the actors.

On the other hand, this probably would improve greatly when remade, so I think this is exactly the sort of remakes they should be doing. Don't remake a great movie. Remake a mediocre one that should have been great.

Every movie is going to be 3-D, eventually. In 20 years people are going to look down on us the way we might look down at people who saw movies only in black and white, and the way they looked down at people who saw movies only with subtitles and an organist: As old farts with a foot in the grave.

Just sayin'.
