Speculations About Rumors of Guesses

As Dustin reported back in the heady days of 2008, Tobey Maguire and the power duo of mediocrity, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are working on a live action adaptation of Robotech, that glorious cut n’ paste Americanization of anime that many geeks watched during the eighties in their formative years. Originally there was a script by Lawrence Kasdan of Raiders of the Lost Ark fame, but he probably produced something of actual quality, which would be terrifically out of place to anyone who upon growing up has gone back and rewatched the DVDs of this series. I loved the series as a kid, but damn did it age badly.
So now, there are three small kernels of news. First, the expected followup to 2007’s animated feature-length sequel to the series Robotech: Shadow Chronicles has been put on indefinite hold until the live action film is resolved. I think that can be read as meaning: If they decide not to make the live action film, there might still be a market for the DVD, otherwise, no dice.
Second, writer Tom Rob Smith, who wrote the fairly well-received novel Child 44 about a serial killer loose in the Soviet Union, has taken over writing duties. So, you know, sunshine and puppies in the next draft!
Third, Sylvain White, director of The Losers, has said that he’s been given a copy of the script and he might possibly potentially end up directing it:
Well, it’s not a project that’s greenlit, so you know, … It’s a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It’s a pretty amazing cartoon. And I’m hoping it’s going to come to fruition. I read a draft that’s really good. … I’m interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there’s no official thing. There’s no deal. … They sent me a draft. I liked it. It’s a work in progress.
Look, take the man seriously: he’s the son of an American pro-basketball player and a French stewardess, and his claim to immortality to date is that he directed Stomp the Yard.

Hey, I loved Stomp the Yard. Sunshine and puppies sounds good to me.
And I still watch "Robotech" every few years or so. Sure, it's held up badly, but that doesn't mean that I still don't enjoy it every time I watch it.
Just don't watch the "Southern Cross" series. It's terrible.
