Gladiators v. Werewolves

It’s the bastard love child of late night Saturdays on the History Channel and SyFy Channel. As many others are noting online, this is exactly the sort of film that bored fourth graders doodle in their notebooks. Gladiators! Versus! Werewolves!

Here’s the synopsis:

The Hunt. The Trap. The Games.

AD 160. The Romans occupy Britain, and the great Hadrian’s Wall divides the land, built to keep back the northern warrior tribes, and something far more dangerous; a clan of savage wolf-like creatures which roam the lowlands.

Word reaches Governor Flavius that the Emperor has decreed that new, more fearsome beasts should be captured for the games. The ambitious Governor, having heard rumours of the fierce wolf-beasts beyond the great wall, senses an opportunity to win favour with the Emperor and even a place in the senate.

The heroic Centurian, Titus, is tasked with hunting and trapping the wolf-creatures. Titus and his legionaries track the beasts to their mountain lair and discover a warrior clan who transform at will into mighty, armour clad werewolves. In a fierce battle, the beasts slaughter half of the legionaries. Titus and his surviving men escape and ensnare the pursuing werewolves.

The Governor is delighted he has his prized new fighting savages, but Titus realizes that anyone bitten by a werewolf is cursed to become one of their kind. He warns the Governor that the werewolves pose a grave threat if they increase their numbers. Titus’ reward for challenging the Governor is to be stripped of his rank and thrown into the arena where the beasts’ savagery will be tested.

Excited spectators cram the amphitheatre. Titus and the land’s best gladiators are pitted against the ferocious werewolves, but the beasts are powerful and smart. For every two fighters they slay, they leave one wounded and alive. Titus’ fears are confirmed; the werewolves are building an army. The final day of the games will be a blood and thunder battle, more savage than any Roman has seen or experienced before.

How awesomely bad does this movie have to be if even the synopsis for the press releases is just stream of consciousness incoherent? It’s the little details they shove into there that put it over the top. Why do they transform into armour clad werewolves? Because the only thing cooler than a werewolf is one wearing armour. Duh. Why does the Governor make the werewolves fight in an arena? Because arenas are fucking cool, duh. You know somebody’s going to be in there with a trident.

The effort is being produced, written and directed by Rob Green, who hasn’t done much of anything else, but somehow managed to raise funding for a film he storyboarded in detention when he was eight.

How did I miss armored werewolves in all of my classics studies? Definitely would've made Latin way more interesting...

There needs to be a flaming sword. And a gryphon. And some unicorns pulling chariots. And some...some...

I can't think of anything else. I'm too tired. After nap time and my lunchable i promise I'll finish. Now where's my fucking security blanket? And somebody get that kid that smells like piss and tuna fish off of my mat. I don't want to have to mushroom stamp a fool in front of all the girls.

Whenever you see, "From the team that brought you . . .," there is trouble ahead. Trouble dipped headfirst in shit.

From the team that brought you Dog Soldiers and The Tournament...and then welded them together.

It's all very well, but who am I supposed to be rooting for exactly? The Romans who are trying to catch the beasts (who, when not wolves, are my fellow countrymen I guess) for sport, or the wolves? Just Titus?

And since I have just read the entire plot, is most of the film going to be focusing on the battle, or do I have to sit through everything I've just read first?

Too many questions.

Whatever. I'm so fucking there.

Posted by: TK at March 25, 2010 9:28 AM

I'm game.

It's Project Metalbeast with gladiators. Maybe we could give Metalbeast a Delorean and a flux capacitor and he could join the armored werewolves and they could all fight until King Arthur shows up riding the Unicorn and kills everyone with his flaming sword and Merlin swoops in on the flying gryphon with Harry Potter and they all slaughter the werewolves and evil Romans.

I think I forgot my medication this morning. It's not fair to make this kind of movie without MST3K around.

am i allowed to say FUCK YES?!

Posted by: gp at March 25, 2010 9:42 AM

The bored fourth grader in me has already bought the tickets.

Provided the Wolf effects dont suck, this could be the best worst movie ever made and all I know is i will eventually see this (I probably wont pay money) and I will love it despite wincing at everyone of its flaws.

Posted by: nadine at March 25, 2010 10:12 AM

yeah, i'm with TK on this one. i'm there.

any chance that this could be done in 3D?

Posted by: causaubon at March 25, 2010 10:15 AM

Look, The Tournament wasn't a good film by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fucking balls-out awesome as hell. I'll watch this piece if only for the grunting and chest beating.

Really? You couldn't figure that out? What did you smoke for breakfast, man?

This movie sounds great to me! I'm surprised no one thought of it before.

I'm there.

This seems inspired by "The Lord Of The Rings II: Wolves Eat Aragorn In My Pants."

I'm just curious as to why the werewolves need weapons. No really...look at the pic...he has some blade thing on his wrist when his claws are fucking ginormous. There is such a thing as an unfair advantage. Arming werewolves is that unfair advantage.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at March 25, 2010 11:33 AM

PB you made me spray my Vitaminwater(tm) all over my monitor with "mushroom stomp a fool".

I just very nearly snorted tea, thank you.

If it really is from the people who made Dog Soldiers, the script may be quite entertaining. Who knows how it'll turn out, but I am quite optimistic about renting this and enjoying it.

Posted by: danny at March 25, 2010 1:37 PM

So, no full moon requirement? Just wolfy goodness whenever? And does their armor just hang on them until they become giant wolves? Is there kibble?

Posted by: Mrcreosote at March 25, 2010 2:25 PM

The armored werewolves are recruiting? Where do I sign up?

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at March 25, 2010 8:41 PM

I'm kind of wondering why this is automatically being considered a "bad" movie. I mean, at least it's a somewhat natural pairing, unlike, say, "Gladiators vs. Pirates". Could be good fun, and maybe even fairly well made. Couldn't be worse than "Underworld".

If one has studied the Roman times arena's were a big things. It controlled the populance who were given bigger and better speticals to keep them in line and voting for the senators.
And werewolves in arena's - if the Romans had found them then that is where they would have ended up. The arena's were used for many scenario's, and some of them very elaborate including filling them with water and waging mock sea battles. Check it on the web if you do not believe me!
The romans would scour the know world looking for new and exotic creatures - and if they were fierce then it was into the arena for entertainment. As for the werewolves wearing armor - sure they had their own built in armament but they were warriors - thinking stratigists - not a big dumb fangly furball, so injurys like a hand lopped off, or a sword throught the chest would lessen their fighting ability. Same reason why human soldiers were protection.
The scenario (should these werewolves exist) is quite plausable.

As a roman archaeologist who teaches the ancient world, I am so requiring this for my classes.... At last, somebody got it right!

I can't abide mis-abbreviation of the word 'versus'. It's 'vs.'. Vee Ess Dot.
