Nic Cage's Head to Burst Into Flames Once More

Did anyone bother to see Mark Steven Johnson’s 2007 adaptation of Marvel Comics’ Ghost Rider? Anyone? You, in the back?

I’m sorry.

Because it’s a goddamn atrocious movie, one that cemented Mark Steven Johnson as not just one of the worst comic book movie directors of all time (he also directed the horribly miscast and misguided Daredevil — one of my favorite comic characters ever and a source of great rage for me now), but perhaps one of the worst directors. Period. Which is impressive for a guy who’s only directed four movies — he also directed the blandly terrible When in Rome, and, strangely, the pretty decent Simon Birch. But Ghost Rider is easily the crime he stands most guilty for.

It’s a shame, because it’s actually a pretty good Marvel property that, if done with the right amount of violence and grim, gallows humor, could make a pretty entertaining film. Well, Columbia Pictures is apparently willing to give it another shot, despite the original grossing just $5 million over its bloated $110 million budget. Nicolas Cage is set to return as Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, the motorcycle rider possessed by the spirit of vengeance. That’s always a mixed bag, because Cage is such a fucking nut these days that you never really know what you’re going to get.

There is relatively positive news, however — Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the writer/director team behind the insane but entertaining Crank series, are in negotiations to direct. Now, neither Crank film is particularly good, but they’re salvaged by the presence of The Statham, and a wildly madcap, viscerally thrilling story. They had a pretty barebones plot, but they were just crazy enough to work.

Unfortunately, that formula probably won’t work for the sequel, which is right now being called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance — not a great start, that. But, it’ll be interesting to see if Neveldine and Taylor can do something more than just over-the-top action, lurid sex scenes and excessive Statham shirtlessness.

Apologies. There’s no such thing as excessive Statham shirtlessness. I’m surprised my computer even permitted me to type that without bursting into flames.

Regardless, whackadoo Cage and Ghost Rider are coming back to your multiplex. Hopefully, they can come up with better villains than the pathetic, pseudo-emo depiction of Blackheart that was so idiotically rendered by Wes Bentley. By the way, just to show what a shit movie that was? Here’s what Blackheart looks like in the comics:

And here’s Wes Bentley in Ghost Rider:

Yeah. Go ahead and eat a bucket of moldy cocks, Mark Steven Johnson.

Go ahead and eat a bucket of moldy cocks

The inherent brilliance of that sentence will stand in the annals of time.

If only the film stock would burst into flames as well.

I enjoyed both Daredevil and Ghost Rider. Not because they were good movies -- God knows they were not -- but because they were movies about DAREDEVIL AND FUCKING GHOST RIDER! They don't need to be good. They just need to have Daredevil and Ghost Rider.

Adversely, Wolverine and Elektra were shit.

The only actor worth watching in "Daredevil" was Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin. The only thing worth watching in "Ghost Rider" was Eva Mendes' ass.

If Cage wasn't starring I think it would have a chance. Since Cage and his hair are already attached, it's not even worth mentioning from this point forward.

"Since Cage and his hair are already attached . . ."

I think the main problem here is that Cage is not attached to his hair, or his hair is not attached to Cage, or something like that.

Just when I got that horrific image from yesterday out of my head. Thanks. Fuckers.

Ugh. Sometimes Marvel needs to dispatch with the idea that every one of their properties needs to get the Iron Man treatment.

Get a director who knows his way around horror stuff, mix one part Constantine, one part Supernatural, one part Not Nic Cage and the 15 Horses it Takes to Make the Glue That Holds His Hair Down, a sprinkle of what Daredevil was supposed to be, blend and shake well.

Hey, all I'm saying is I'm available for an audition.

jesus christ. Were you shit kicked every day at school and harbour resentments still in your adult life? Your fucking writing is stinks worse than some whiny bitch with a 5 day old maxi pad. You and this site are disgusting. Ghostrider was not THAT bad, unless of course you are some douche that is obsessed with comics, which you appear to be, and cannot appreciate an interpretation of an idea. You fucking disgust me you perverted dick. Go fuck yourself and if anyone ever hired you they should be shot in the face and then pissed on. Ass

/points up

Well that's surprisingly coherent for an internet flame rant on Ghost Rider.

Your fucking writing is stinks

There's irony, and then there's delicious irony.

Lighten up, Francis.

I have never laughed harder than I did when my fool drunk friends and I went to see Ghost Rider in the theater. Quite possibly the pinnacle of Unintentional Hilarity. Emo villain who bugs his eyes out all the time in lieu of acting! Thoroughly pointless female character whose boobs have better screen presence than she does! An old-timer who constantly says "LEGEND HAS IT..." in a gravelly drawl (why, Sam? WHY?)! And, of course, Nic Cage at his Earnestly Nic Cage-iest.

For two full years after that fiasco, any time one of my fool drunk friends would tell a fool drunk story, he or she would lean in, cock an eyebrow, and start it with a growling "LEGEND HAS IT..."

"LEGEND HAS IT, someone ate the last cupcake..."
"LEGEND HAS IT, I need to take a dump..."
"LEGEND HAS IT, your girlfriend just took her top off..."

All of which are much funnier when you are stoned, but still. Memories. :)

Shockingly the Directors Cut of Daredevil was vastly superior. There was about 20-30 min of extra footage that was cut from the theatrical release. and the pacing and depth was much better in the DC DVD release. It's still not a great movie but it was loads better than the original cut.

Worth watching anyways.
