If You're Gonna Scream, Scream With Me

Neve Campbell To Scream One More Time / TK

Oh, Neve Campbell. You just don’t seem to be able to break out of the Scream franchise. Sure, you’ve made a few other movies (to limited, if any, success), and yeah, you even took your clothes off a couple of times. But when the going gets tough, the tough return to their roots. Yes, Neve Campbell will return to the role of Sidney Prescott for Scream 4 (a role she reputedly had earlier turned down), and Wes Craven is actually in talks with Dimension Films to return to the director’s chair for it. Both Courteney Cox and David Arquette will return as well.

I dunno. The original Scream seemed like it was destined to be a classic, though I don’t know that it’s ever really reached that status. The second one was pretty dumb. The third was also pretty dumb, but its tongue-in-cheek self-awareness helped boost it. Also, Parker Posey’s ridiculously melodramatic, over-the-top performance was absolutely hilarious.

But a fourth one? On the one hand, I can’t imagine what’s left for the franchise to say. On the other hand, I could use a break from the rape-and-mutilate series of horror movies of late. With the exception of zombie movies and the Final Destination films, horror movies have lost their sense of humor, and the Scream movies have always incorporated a nice, sly sense of wit.

After it’s done, though, Neve, honey, you need to slap your agent around a little.

I thought this bitch was doing porn.

Oh wait, her beefy mannish frame won't let her break into mainstream porn, she'd have to do freaky hermaphrodite porn.

Moments like this never laaaaast

No word on whether any of the other regulars (Courteney Cox or David Arquette) will return.

A week or so ago I was watching Jay Leno when nothing else was on, and Courtney Cox was the guest--she mentioned the new Scream and saying that both she and David Arquette were both planning to be in it, she didn't know at the time whether Neve Campbell would be involved. And I found this article which says "It's already known that former Friends star Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette will star in the film." So there ya go.

Posted by: JL at September 28, 2009 8:20 PM

Yeah, I read that Cox and Arquette were the first to sign on.

Posted by: Kate at September 28, 2009 8:39 PM

And there was me thinking Scream 4 already existed.

There ought to be a rule that says you can't make another sequel after your movie's been parodied.

Chief problem with the Scream franchise: too many un-killable protagonists/stars. Where's the tension with Campbell, Arquette, and Cox presented as invincible? Even if you killed all three of them off in the opening scene of the fourth movie, it would play like simply like the recycled opening gimmick.

It's too late to solve the problem now, as the tone is set, and this story has been played out. In the second and third movies the overwrought drama was just too much, Parker Posey notwithstanding. I'd almost watch this just to see how Randy's next beyond-the-grave videocassette explains that his horror "trilogy" theories that were the spine of the third movie inexplicably have been trumped by the all-powerful studio-wants-more-money rule of horror filmmaking.

Hell - maybe that's the only way you could make this movie interesting: turn it into some sort of verite, Hollywood-insider, meta exercise in which Cox, Arquette, and Campbell play themselves in a real world with a real copycat killer - sort of in the vein of that one Elm Street edition that had Freddy transcending the screen and the filmmakers as the characters.

I just don't know how much more mileage there is to be had from the arch, self-aware horror shtick. It was novel in 1996. After all the referential crap of the last 13 years, this seems tired.

Hey, so you wanna join up? Good! But just be warned ... this site ___sugarloves.com___ is addictive. It has been known to keep people up all night feverishly clicking their button. Relationships have been destroyed, jobs have been lost, and lives have been ruined! On the other hand, all bad stuff seem not too important. you know you want

The spambot's name is onewetbed?

Yuck and ewww.

Posted by: MM at September 28, 2009 11:22 PM

why don't they just make the movie-within-scream-3 'STAB'?

since it had three scripts (don't make me explain why i know this), they could make it with three different endings (think Clue)...

and posey HAS to come back as the-gail-within.

please don't make me beg.

I come to this site all day long. I love it. Not only is it a great diversion from work, the movie reviews are filled with well-writen, insightful criticism and have just the right balance of bitchiness and reverence. Pajiba Love is something I actually look forward to EVERY DAY on my lunch break. I've been introduced to new music that I would never have heard of elsewhere (hello Micky Avalon). The Eloquent Eloquence has gotten me actually caring what I write when I bother to leave a post. I love Pajiba. Kneel to the Godtopus.

That being said, this spamming nonsense has to stop. Sugarloves.com? Really? I almost cut and pasted it in my search-bar. I'm so used to reading the amazing comment threads here, I thought it was just some random fan of the site posting some interesting link. This isn't the first time I've seen it either. It's killing my good time.

Please do what you can to put a stop to this distracting and obnoxious spam. Any other site I'd just bolt, but like I said, I really like it here. The meer fact that I feel welcome and encouraged to voice my frustration over this should speak very highly of the sense of community you've created.

Oooh, the poor little spambot. He/she/it is just looking for some love, be it tall, wet, rich,or a hot single.
They crack me up actually. I'm pretty sure spambot is from another country, if not planet. Spambot has made the EE's, you know. High accolades indeed.

"Before" being the operative word.

i got the wrong goggles then. . .she's always just been a fairly generic skinny movie gal, other than having a memorable squint

Posted by: idleprimate at September 29, 2009 7:49 AM

You know, I never watched Party of Five (I think I tried an episode once back in the day but couldn't get past all the whining-and I was a teenager in the 90s for goodness sake) but did you ever notice how all the female characters are really squinty? Neve, JLH and even Lacey Chabert. It's like they thought squinty eyes = sad and deep = good actressin'.
Wrooooong. If I never see Neve Campbell or JLH in another movie, I'll know there is a Godtopus. Lacey only gets a pass b/c she was funny in Mean Girls. But she's walking on some thin ice.
For me, squinty eyes = death rays. Men have died. For reals.
The worthy were revived by my glorious rack.

I'm just waiting for Neve to segue to Lifetime Mini Movies. It's only a matter of time. Tick tock, Neve. Tick tock...

TK, she should be slapping her agent constantly. Has anybody seen any of her recent movies? No seriously, what has she been in recently? I have no idea what happened to her career but I'm guessing she's been doing those movies Slim was talking about.
