If You're Gonna Scream, Scream With Me

Oh, Neve Campbell. You just don't seem to be able to break out of the Scream franchise. Sure, you've made a few other movies (to limited, if any, success), and yeah, you even took your clothes off a couple of times. But when the going gets tough, the tough return to their roots. Yes, Neve Campbell will return to the role of Sidney Prescott for Scream 4 (a role she reputedly had earlier turned down), and Wes Craven is actually in talks with Dimension Films to return to the director's chair for it. Both Courteney Cox and David Arquette will return as well.

I dunno. The original Scream seemed like it was destined to be a classic, though I don't know that it's ever really reached that status. The second one was pretty dumb. The third was also pretty dumb, but its tongue-in-cheek self-awareness helped boost it. Also, Parker Posey's ridiculously melodramatic, over-the-top performance was absolutely hilarious.

But a fourth one? On the one hand, I can't imagine what's left for the franchise to say. On the other hand, I could use a break from the rape-and-mutilate series of horror movies of late. With the exception of zombie movies and the Final Destination films, horror movies have lost their sense of humor, and the Scream movies have always incorporated a nice, sly sense of wit.

After it's done, though, Neve, honey, you need to slap your agent around a little.
