I Would Watch Željko Ivanek Do Just About Anything

NBC describes The Event as "...an emotional high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée, Leila (Sarah Roemer), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-ups in U.S. history. Sean's quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Blair Underwood); Sophia (Laura Innes), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean's shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind."

Sounds a little 24-ish and even a little Flash Forward-y; if the story is well paced and doesn't get lost or meander, it could go somewhere for a season. But what happens after that? Maybe NBC is going for a one-year wonder, which isn't a half bad idea either. Instead of taking stories and trying to extend them out over time to the point where people become lost or bored, why not give the audience fresh stories each year?

NBC could, however, be beaten to the punch by AMC, who will begin airing Rubicon this June. AMC's version of a conspiracy thriller "...centers on Will Travers (James Badge Dale), a brilliant analyst at a national think tank who discovers that his employers are not who they seem to be." Rubicon also stars Miranda Richardson, Arliss Howard, Dallas Roberts, Jessica Collins, Christopher Evan Welch and Lauren Hodges. Not quite the same level of star power, but that's not always a deterrent, and AMC has a good track record with dramas these days.

What do you guys think? Will you watch either or both?
