NBC Orders Pilot from J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron

J.J. Abrams reminds me more and more of a novelist as opposed to a television and film producer/director/etc. He keeps putting out material, and while some of it falls flat ("Alcatraz"), some of it doesn't end as well as the beginning promised ("Lost"), and some has moments of the inexplicable (no I won't let soul magnets go), he keeps putting original shows out there that don't fit into the procedural pigeon hole. He's like Dan Simmons or Stephen King with some works that are brilliant and some that are lousy, but always coming out with more.

On this latest project, he's got NBC committed at least to a pilot order, and has managed to bring Alfonso Cuaron on board to direct the pilot. If Cuaron makes this pilot a tenth as good as Children of Men, I'll watch the whole damned series no matter how many cel-shaded episodes with zeppelins I have to endure.

So the idea is that there is this girl and she has super powers (which presumably will be important for saving the world or at least the best parts of it). The catch is that they won't develop for another seven years and so a dude is broken out of prison just to protect her for that time. Bad guys and interesting things apparently ensue.

That's very little to go on, and although the summary is vague enough that it could be compared to a dozen other stories, my first thought given the folks involved was that it most reminds me of Dan Simmons' Endymion.

On the other hand, my cynical side pointed out that if the kid doesn't get powers for seven years, then the show is going to get cancelled before we ever see that.

Are you implying that bad "television and film producer/director/etc." is synonymous with 'novelist'?? Am I missing something? Can't we just call him an uneven and overrated television and film producer/director/etc.?

"NBC Orders Pilot From J.J.Abrams and Alphonso Cuaron"
Dammit JJ and AL, I want a freakin pilot NOW!! Hop to it.

  • googergieger

"he keeps putting original shows out there."

Ignoring my double take for a minute. Go on...

Pretty much my initial reaction. So for seven years she's just a girl who needs protection. Yeah, never seen THAT before. Making this sort of thing "good" would depend on character development, but the pilot has to sell first so I don't see how this gets out of the gate without compromise.

So...basically JJ Abrams is to be commended as an artist for actually getting stuff done and stretching himself?

So it's like The Golden Child?

  • Three_nineteen

I was thinking Terminator crossed with the Archive/Kincaid relationship from the Dresden Files.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

Which could be an awesome show in a universe where things NBC orders turn out awesome.

  • Wembley

Which is why her powers will start developing halfway through the first season-probably some sort of time travel that will take her from girl to hot piece of eye candy just in time for November sweeps.
