Natalie Portman Cast as Jane Foster in Thor

If you keep up with the rest of the movie blogs, nothing seems to set the goddamn place on fire quicker than casting news for one of the superhero comic book movies. Never mind that, besides established comic books and, now, Iron Man, there’s no actual evidence that these comic-book movies will be any goddamn good. It’s a Comic-Con world, I suppose. Indeed, the huge news over the weekend was Ryan Reynolds casting as Green Lantern … and if I hadn’t seen it the second it was announced, the 47 emails I received over the next two days would’ve alerted me to it. I appreciate the heads up, though I’m still not certain how I feel about being somehow linked to R-squared. Maybe if we get big enough, though, we can score an interview with Mr. Reynolds without having to work through a PR person (we got offered a junket interview last month, but as you know, we don’t do junkets or other PR-arranged interviews. You folks may think I want to sleep with RR, but I’m not a whore, damnit).

Anyway, the big shebang today was the casting for Thor. Natalie Portman has signed on to play Jane Foster, opposite Chris Hemsworth’s title character in the Kenneth Branagh directed movie. That’s kind of a clusterfuck of names, which suggests that Thor could be a smart, killer comic-book movie, or a complete goddamn mess. I like the idea of a Shakespearean comic-book movie in theory, but then again, Branagh’s Hamlet tested my limits.

For those unfamiliar with the comic, Jane Foster was a nurse who was involved in a love triangle with both Thor and his alter ego, Donald Blake, which sets up a compelling narrative for the film. In the comics, she was also briefly granted immortality and the power of the Gods, though she eventually lost that. Nevertheless, she still assists The Avengers occasionally, which suggests that Portman could also make her way into The Avengers in 2012.

Jessica Biel had been rumored for the part. I suppose she’s now available to play whatever love interest the Green Lantern has. The woman with the yellow umbrella?

So it was either bring in an obvious post-op tranny, or cast the queen of monotone acting.

Talk about a catch-22.

/Casting FAIL!

Aww, I enjoyed Branagh's Hamlet. It was bloated, sure, but it looked real nice. Also, the dialogue was decent.

Portman over Biel any day, in every way.

Wait, which one is the post-op...

How can you be in a love triangle if it's the same guy?

Hmm. This could either be fantastic or terrible. After all, there WAS another superhero movie that boasted "Ang Lee directs Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly..." and we all know how THAT turned out.

Hey Figgy! The Hulk was just misunderstood! Kinda like, well, The Hulk...
OH MY GOD ANG LEE IS GENIUS

I was suddenly reminded of V for Vendetta. It made a killing at the box office (or maybe not? Maybe just the box office in my head. Details.) and Natalie Portman did a damn good job in it. Plus, I think smart summer blockbusters should be a little more prevalent.

But then, I do love exploding shit in a brainless fashion. I'm torn.

Branagh’s Hamlet tested your limits?! Branagh’s Hamlet was utter shit from beginning to end.

Branagh sort of burst on the scene with Henry V, which I admit was pretty great; but he's been on a downhill slide ever since then.

I have no hope whatsoever for this movie and I can only hope Portman gets through with a minimum amount of Branagh taint on her career.

When I read "the woman with the yellow umbrella" I thought of the man in the yellow hat from Curious George. Now that's a role for Jessica Biel opposite Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern.

Posted by: Matt at July 13, 2009 7:52 PM

Thor is a homo.

Posted by: bubblegumshoe at July 13, 2009 7:53 PM

"Jessica Biel had been rumored for the part. I suppose she’s now available to play whatever love interest the Green Lantern has. The woman with the yellow umbrella?"

That'd be Carol Fenris aka Star Sapphire, Mr Rowles. Character doesn't wear yellow but as Fenris loves Hal Jordan. And yet whenever possessed by cosmic forces Fenris turns into Star Sapphire, who wants nothing more than to see GL die at her hands.

This is from memory. So if anyone wants to offer corrections to what I have written feel free to do so.

Don’t these people that do comic book movies know anything? Why would you cast a bigger star in a supporting role than the lead? I just went to wikipedia and they don’t even got a picture of the motherfucker. Call me insensitive but the movie is about Thor, not the hoe that Thor is puttin’ the hammer to.

Posted by: Guess Who! at July 13, 2009 8:07 PM

Casting a supporting cast that draws more publiciy than the lead has been done before. If memory serves "Superman: The Movie" got off the ground because of the Salkinds' casting Brando and Hackman before an actor for the title role was even found.

Posted by: Mr. West at July 13, 2009 8:18 PM

Meant to write "publicity." Aplologies.

Posted by: Mr. West at July 13, 2009 8:19 PM

I understand what you are saying Mr. West, but the difference was that motherfucers knew who Christopher Reeve was. Who the fuck is Chris Hemsworth?

Posted by: Guess Who! at July 13, 2009 8:39 PM

Sorry, Guess Who, but no-one knew who Chris Reeve was when Superman was cast. Mr West is correct, the hype was all about Brando, and then Hackman came on, too.

"Jessica Biel had been rumored for the part. I suppose she’s now available to play whatever love interest the Green Lantern has. The woman with the yellow umbrella?"

I just need to see her in somebody's leotard, tights and high heels. Please oh please oh please.

Posted by: Meander at July 13, 2009 9:31 PM

Chris Reeve? Really, except for a few soap fans, he was an unknown, and a painfully skinny one at that. The kind of kept him under wraps until they thickened him up a bit.

Posted by: Dave at July 13, 2009 9:38 PM

I'm still pissed at Branagh for not picking Alexander Skarsgaard for Thor. Seriously, dude, he's fucking Swedish and built like a god. And is it just me or is Chris Reeve the lesser known Chris Pine?

Sometimes I think artistic types ignore a perfectly great casting choice just to be different. Keep it simple, assholes.

Posted by: Kayanne at July 13, 2009 10:52 PM

Shit. And by Chris Reeve, I of course mean Chris Hemsworth.

Posted by: Kayanne at July 13, 2009 10:53 PM

I'm with Jerce. Branagh's Henry V was quite brilliant (for a sequel *badum bum*). But then he kinda just disappeared up his own ass. Frankenstein anyone?

As for Thor, I ain't placing any bets either way.

Well, if Portman is involved it can't be any good.

Posted by: kayla at July 14, 2009 9:15 AM

I watched part of Branagh's Frankenstein last night, and I suddenly lost all hope for Thor.

Maybe if they get Helena Bonham Carter to run through a hallway, on fire, INEXPLICABLY CAUSING EVERYTHING AROUND HER TO EXPLODE, it will distract me from how overwrought everything else is.

Posted by: Snath at July 14, 2009 9:45 AM

Chris Hemsworth’s not big enough, physically, to be Thor. Thor generally stands toe-to-toe with Hulk, so being hunky is not enough. However, there is no better choice of Jane Foster than Natalie Portman.

I'll be in my bunk.

Posted by: hater from siloam springs at July 14, 2009 10:32 AM

I might buy Alexander Skarsgaard as Thor. How tall is he? He should be a full head's height taller than Jane Foster. I know you can make the camera do anything, but If he's not properly tall and wide, he's going to look stupid.

Posted by: hater from siloam springs at July 14, 2009 10:35 AM

IMDb has Jessica Biel rumored to play the part of Sif (whomever that might be). So, we might get both the post-op tranny and the queen of monotone acting (which, I guess, might be the case even if the Biel rumor is not true).

Posted by: sosumi at July 14, 2009 10:44 AM

hater Skarsgaard is 6'4" with really broad shoulders, but even though he admitted to being brought in for screen tests (with the hammer and everything!), Branagh went Hemsworth.

Stupid heads.

Posted by: Kayanne at July 14, 2009 11:52 AM

Brian Blessed is playing Odin in this movie. There is no chance it will anything less than great.
