Whozawhatnow?

It’s rare that movie casting news stuns me. Enrages me? Yes. Saddens me? Occasionally. Drives me to mass homicide? More often than not. But this is one that has me left in stunned bewilderment.

Natalie Portman has been cast in the Marvel Enterprises 2011 production of Thor. I know. I know. I mean, I love Natalie Portman, probably more than I should. Who she’s going to play is still a bit of a mystery — current speculation alternates between Sif, wife of the God of Thunder; Jane Foster the nurse, or Amora the Enchantress. Regardless of who the choice is, it’s still a shock. But, I suppose that this adds an air of legitimacy to it, and given Marvel’s recent run of success in Avengers-related movies, I should have some faith.

Who will play Thor himself is still up in the air. Several actors have tested so far, but nothing’s been confirmed. But again… I guess we gotta have a little faith.

Natalie Portman seems very, very tiny to be a Norse Goddess.

Very small.

Alexander Skarsgård is all they need. That's the one choice so far that I wholeheartedly approve of.

Posted by: Snath at March 17, 2009 11:36 AM

Nope! Still not feeling you TK.

Don't let Natalie Portman's stature fool you. She is not to messed with. When she was in Harvard, she smoked weed everyday. She cheated every test. She snorted all the yay.

Posted by: jM at March 17, 2009 11:41 AM

The proper name is "yayo" jM, have you not seen "Scarface?"

Posted by: Pookie at March 17, 2009 11:47 AM

I like my Norse Goddesses and Valkyries about 6 foot tall with the Heaving Bosom.
Basing this TOTALLY on looks, I'd cast Kristanna Loken.

Posted by: Bridget at March 17, 2009 11:51 AM

I have, Pooks. But, if you knew what I was referencing, then you would also know that she shortens "yayo" to "yay" for the sake of rhyming.

I like my Norse Goddesses and Valkyries about 6 foot tall with the Heaving Bosom.

Me too. I hear Bridget Nielsen has been looking for work.

So, they got an Israeli to play a Norse God. Makes sense. Totally. Cause, you know, it's not like there are whole countries full of tall, statuesque, gorgeous blonde women that could play the part. Nope.

I want to see Adrienne Palicki get cast for this. I'm worried that after she leaves "Friday Night Lights" she's going to disappear into that netherworld reserved for actresses over 5' 10". She can keep Aisha Tyler and Sigourney Weaver company.

I like my broads big and tall also, give me that tall Kardashian girl, the big sister. I’d put some pipe to her ass.

I’m sorry jM, but it’s one of my pet peeves. It infuriates me when people don’t show the proper respect for the game.

What you want jM?
To Drink and Fight!
What you need jM?
To Fuck All Night!

Awww, I knew you'd have my back, Optimus. Just don't catch me when I'm crazy off that airplane food. I'll put my foot down your throat 'til you shit in my shoe.

Well, Natalie Portman IS a goddess, so that seems right. Now all we need is Alexander Skarsgård ...

Posted by: MFS at March 17, 2009 12:35 PM

Well, if you look at the old Marvel artwork for Sif (god bless Jack Kirby!), Portman might make a good fit for the part.

And while the Valkyries might be stereotypical Wagnerian Amazon types, we're talking Gods and Goddesses here - Sif could look like Pippi Longstocking and still be able to mow down entire armored divisions with a flick of her dainty wrist.

Posted by: The Wanderer at March 17, 2009 12:44 PM

Uma. That is all.

Posted by: Sweetie Dahling at March 17, 2009 12:44 PM

As much as I adore Natalie Portman, I have to agree with twig that she is too tiny to play a Norse goddess. Don't get me wrong, she could probably totally kick my ass, and her acting abilities are not to be impugned, but physically, she just doesn't fit the bill.

Between this and Scarlett in IM2, the nerds are going to be doing some furious jerkin'.

So...uh...does anybody have a good remedy for chafing of the genitals?

I'm not familiar with the comic book, but the mythological Sif was a harvest goddess. She's described as having fine golden hair and a more bountiful build than Portman.

Posted by: Inaras at March 17, 2009 1:17 PM

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LIKE IT! Portman is ideal for Sif. Or she could play Hela. She my be small in stature but she's got some chops on her. Regardless this is great news. My roommates will definately see this movie now. They don't like Thor but love Portman.

Posted by: Mr.West at March 17, 2009 1:23 PM

In the comic books Sif has long dark hair and sometimes has it cut short or worn long. Not familiar with her appearance in actual Norse Mythology but that's her look in the Marvel comics I use to read back in the 80's and early 90's.

Am I the only one that heard that Josh Hartnett was also cast as a non-Thor character? I JUST heard it. Like, three or four days ago. And they were talking to some European guy (maybe Austrian? Swedish? Who knows) about being the main guy. So far, I vote for the Austrian guy they got for the new Terminator. Even in the short trailer shots, he outdoes Arnold 100:1.

Posted by: ChristianH at March 17, 2009 3:31 PM

Maybe Natalie Portman is playing the little angel that pops up over Thor's shoulder whenever he's facing moral issues.

Posted by: Sofía at March 17, 2009 3:56 PM

Hey, Pookie and I agree on something. What say we get a few gallons of olive oil and challenge the Kardashian sisters to some wrasslin'?

On another note, Natalie Portman HAS to be playing Jane Foster. Which means we're dealing with the Donald Blake Thor, which means we're going to get another goddamn origin story. Feh.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at March 17, 2009 4:00 PM

ChristianH, you're probably thinking of Alexander Skarsgård, who is indeed Swedish. He would be perfect for Thor.

Posted by: Snath at March 17, 2009 4:09 PM

Waaait a second. I thought we'd already decided Nathan Fillion was going to play Thor. And when we decide, Hollywood obeys. Right?

Posted by: the_wakeful at March 17, 2009 4:59 PM

wakeful

Ok, so if Nathan Fillion is going to play Thor, he's now going to play Thor and Captain America, which means the Avengers lineup will be five Nathan Fillions and RDJ.

I vote Tricia Helfer for Norse Goddess....am I right? Huh? Huh?

Any doubt? http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1350/1301651808_bf5aa66a03.jpg?v=0

How about now?

I read another report that said Portman denied involvement.

ScarJo was cast as an eastern European villian and Portman is being considered for a Norse goddess. Um. Maybe they should reverse the two?

Portman, yes, was born in Israel. And Romola Garai was born in Hong Kong. Nationality aside, Portman's heritage is Polish/Russian/something-or-other. I say give her ScarJo's new role (she'll probably do more with it, anyway).

Alexander Skarsgård Is he the guy from Generation Kill?

Posted by: Jon at March 17, 2009 10:40 PM

Can we please not talk about ScarJo being cast in 'Iron Man 2"? I find it waaaaay to depressing to even contemplate. I was *so* excited about the addition of my lover Sam Rockwell, and now I can't believe I'm going to have to look at her stupid face for the entire movie. GOD.

I hope RDJ blows her up - after punching her in the face repeatedly, of course.
