Standard disclaimer: True Blood is awful, and this post will contain spoilers up through last Sunday’s episode.

So has everybody heard about the re-casting scandal this season, right? Luke Grimes, playing Jessica’s vampire boyfriend James, quit the show after realizing his character was involved in a budding romantic relationship with Lafayette. Not creative differences, not scheduling coflicts. Grimes just straight up didn’t want to make out with Lafayette.

Nelsan Ellis, the actor who plays Lafayette, responded to Grimes leaving with all of the sassy grace you’d expect. When asked if Ellis had bonded with Grimes, he responded:

I didn’t, but I’m completely … I mean, I can say I’m not going to make a comment, but I just think that, you’re an actor, you’re an actor on a show that’s True Blood, we’re all sitting there going, “You quit your job because … really?” I’m just… I’m over him. You quit your job because you don’t want to play a gay part? As if it’s … You know what? I’m going to stop talking.

and later:

You have to be open. But more importantly, you make a statement when you do something like that. I did a documentary called Damn Wonderful, about gay suicide, and you make a statement, a big statement, when you go, “I don’t want to play this part because it’s gay.” If you have a child, if you have a son, and he comes out as gay, what are you going to do? If you have a daughter who comes out gay …? You just made a statement, and it has ripple effects.

Ellis is too polite to say it so I will: Luke? That was really stupid. Really, really stupid. I’m not saying that actors should have to do things that they’re uncomfortable with. I’m saying that you should be comfortable with this. That big gay sex scene that you were so afraid of? It was some light making out and about 3 seconds of fake humping.

Maybe you just weren’t attracted to Ellis. That’s also stupid, but fine. Do you think that every onscreen couple ever has been attracted to each other? Because if so, I’d like to introduce you to romantic leading men Billy Bob Thornton and Woody Allen. You know who Tony Curtis was talking about when he said “It’s like kissing Hitler”? Marilyn Goddamn Monroe. You know who hated each other in real life? Baby and Johnny. And yet, they all finished their scenes.

Because those people are professionals. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze brought about the the sexual awakenings in a generation of girls all while wanting to kill each other, but you’re willing to lose your job because you can’t manage to make out with this guy?

What? I mean … why? How could … I’ve got nothing. What would Lafayette do?

Bless you, Lafayette. You’re a national treasure.
