The Movie We Wanted Isn't Happening... But There's Still Good News (For Once)

About six months ago, we ran the promo trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, starring Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan. It wasn’t actually a trailer, but rather a short film from director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame… no, seriously. He directed Fame), who had hoped someone would pick it up for feature length one. That didn’t happen, which is a shame because if you don’t remember, the short was fucking fantastic. It was a gritty, hard-edged, real-world adaptation of the Mortal Kombat universe, and it was seriously badass.
Well, good news kiddies — Tancharoen (read an interview with him here) has been tapped to turn the concept into a series of webisodes — 10 in all. He’s writing the script along with Todd and Aaron Helbing (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), and Michael Jai White is set to return to the role of Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs. Casting for Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and Scorpion is ongoing, with no names announced yet. Shooting takes place next month in Vancouver.
For those who didn’t catch it the first time around, here’s the original short film:
Sweet.
