The Movie We Wanted Isn't Happening... But There's Still Good News (For Once)

About six months ago, we ran the promo trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, starring Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan. It wasn’t actually a trailer, but rather a short film from director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame… no, seriously. He directed Fame), who had hoped someone would pick it up for feature length one. That didn’t happen, which is a shame because if you don’t remember, the short was fucking fantastic. It was a gritty, hard-edged, real-world adaptation of the Mortal Kombat universe, and it was seriously badass.

Well, good news kiddies — Tancharoen (read an interview with him here) has been tapped to turn the concept into a series of webisodes — 10 in all. He’s writing the script along with Todd and Aaron Helbing (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), and Michael Jai White is set to return to the role of Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs. Casting for Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and Scorpion is ongoing, with no names announced yet. Shooting takes place next month in Vancouver.

For those who didn’t catch it the first time around, here’s the original short film:

Sweet.

I never realized how damned creepy the backstories probably were on those games. A general lack of skill and pixilated bloodbaths were enough to turn me off o_O

I'm happy we'll get more but I want to see that on the big screen. Dammit Hollywood! You give me lame shit all the time! How about something cool?

Phil DeFranco: douchebag. Proof that a completely free market yields no redeeming value. The worst of the YouTube famous people, and I am going to take legal action that Pajiba caused me to watch one of his videos.

Mortal Combat web series? Why can't SyFy pick up something that good?

I was hoping to see this on the big screen. What the hell's wrong with the Hollywood Execs? NONE of them picked this one up? Idiots. I have to put up with shite like X-Men 3, Eat, Pray, Love and Jennifer's Body, but I can't get this one in the theatres?

I call foul!

1) Phil De Franco is a funny guy. almost as funny as Zero Punctuation or Movie Bob at Escapist. or Confused Matthew at Youtube.

2) I loved the originals. I think this remake should go big screen. I'd say that the way this starts out, would be perfect for the title sequence, then the title that says Mortal Kombat: Vengence. and then goes off from there.

By all honest rights to God, this should be on the Sci-Fi channel. (yes, I refer to it still as that, and not it's nom de jure.)

"1) Phil De Franco is a funny guy. almost as funny as Zero Punctuation"
So he's a pretentious egoist that has one joke that he runs into the ground?

Awesome. And a webseries means no bullshit censoring, no 'softening' or anything, just all-around crazy, gritty and badass.

Posted by: Figgy at January 19, 2011 1:03 AM

This has yet to get old, and I love Michael Jai White. He was perfect for Spawn and he's perfect for Jax. God dammit it to hell, this needs to be on the big screen uncensored, unsoftened, crazy, gritty, and bad-ass just like Figgy said!
