A Better Idea of What's in the Rabbit Hole

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trade News | Comments (34)

Several weeks ago, we featured some of the first images to come out of Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland, which picks up after the events of the original story, catching up with Alice when she’s 17. It’s a sequel, of sorts. Alice follows the white rabbit down the hole and revisits Wonderland 10 years after he initial visit, but has no memory of her prior time there.

The images, courtesy of Slashfilm, feature Mia Wasikowska as Alice and, once again, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Additionally, I’ve added an image from two weeks ago, of Matt Lucas’ Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee look like Gilliam animations from Monty Python.

And the Mad Hatter is the bastard child of Carrot Top and Elijah Wood.

I am so turned on right now.

Posted by: Judith Priest at July 6, 2009 11:26 AM

I'm frightened right now.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at July 6, 2009 11:28 AM

I....have no response to that.....

I don't know whether to be turned on, or to hide under my desk. Well, it's Depp, so either way I'm gonna end up in my bunk. Even a scary Depp is better than no Depp at all.

So we had this girl in college who had a really big forehead. It was so big people called her "Fivehead". HBC is easily "Sevenhead".

Goddamn I hate that woman.

Posted by: ahamos at July 6, 2009 11:32 AM

Why does she have a pig!? That disturbs me more than Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Pigs are not rabbits!

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 6, 2009 11:33 AM

Pigs are not rabbits!

You're right! They are much, much tastier.

Mmmm, pork.

Posted by: Snath at July 6, 2009 11:38 AM

am i the only person to be sort of bored by this? i mean, it's another tim burton movie with johnny depp looking weird. i'm sure it's going to be better then 99% of the other movies out there, but still...

Posted by: glittergirl at July 6, 2009 11:39 AM

doesn't she have a pig because in the original story someone turns a baby into a pig? was it her or the white queen? or...maybe i am just hallucinating activities involving carol channing again i don't know.

Posted by: JenVegas at July 6, 2009 11:41 AM

Ditto glittergir. I mean, we get it Tim, you had a fucked up childhood and now you are taking it out on the rest of us. Though I do have to say, if he was in charge of the Potter series, it would have been far more fun thus far.

Posted by: richmac at July 6, 2009 11:48 AM

Not to be repetitive, but looking at Depp here gives me such an interesting mixture of terror and arousal that I'm already trying to purchase tickets.

Posted by: DontStopNow at July 6, 2009 11:52 AM

I am so into this film it may have adverse effect on my social life - how long do I have to wait to see this, dammit?

Posted by: missh at July 6, 2009 11:52 AM

I want a goddam Viewmaster fastened to my head with stills from this in the right side and stills from Robogeisha in the left. Every time the stills advance, I want an electric current to pulse through my genitals. This is what I want. Make it happen.

Posted by: Skitz at July 6, 2009 11:54 AM

Wow! Adam Ant is really looking emaciated these days.

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 6, 2009 11:56 AM

The Duchess has a pig that she believes to be a baby in the original story. Not sure why the Red Queen would be holding it.

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 6, 2009 12:09 PM

At least Burton's talents fit the source material. I'll be checking this out -- Alice deserves a modern take that doesn't feature Martin Short....

Posted by: sansho1 at July 6, 2009 12:29 PM

Meh.

Posted by: figgy at July 6, 2009 1:02 PM

When Alice first meets the Duchess, the Duchess is nursing a baby. The Duchess then throws the baby at Alice, and after Alice catches it and tries to get it into the nursing position, Alice notices that it's actually a pig.

So far, I have not seen any photos from Tim Burton's version that show the Duchess. Her original drawings were based on the ugliest woman in Europe.

He's the best there is at what he does, even if what he does isn't very nice (to steal a quote). I figure he'll do an iteration of Alice that is very close to what has always been intended - a sinister/warped hallucination marrying a young innocent with incomprehensible (to her) adult themes. I can't wait to see it!

Goddamn I hate that woman.

HA. ahamos, you are most triumphant. I too hate Sevenhead.

glittergirl: We should start a club. The We Are Bored of Tim Burton Club.

Posted by: figgy at July 6, 2009 2:32 PM

I just can't care about Tim Burton movies anymore. He has made the same movie over and over again for the last 15 years. It's stopped being creative and "edgy".

glittergirl and figgy, I will gladly be the treasurer of your We Are Bored of Tim Burton Club

Posted by: claire at July 6, 2009 2:51 PM

Can I be the offical weaver of the We Are Bored of Tim Burton Club?

I'll even print up the official membership cards.
They'll have pictures of Nathan Fillion them.
Is that OK?

Posted by: BWeaves at July 6, 2009 2:56 PM

Well you can have a weaver without a printmaker, t-shirts anyone?

Posted by: TryScience at July 6, 2009 3:58 PM

Can't, rather. Depp, Sevenhead, and lots of curling withered branches topped by a yawning hipster could make for a nice official seal.

Posted by: TryScience at July 6, 2009 4:00 PM

Mini-diversion: Actors with the biggest foreheads (baldness doesn't count).

1. HBC
2. Mathew McFayen (or however it's spelled)
3. Nic Cage

Posted by: BWeaves at July 6, 2009 4:43 PM

Jebus, now am am paranoid that my forehead is too big. Could I have gone my whole life and not known a thing like that? It is like when someone is wearing a smelly sweater and everyone is too polite to say anything?

Posted by: Lindsey at July 6, 2009 5:13 PM

*I* am paranoid.

Posted by: Lindsey at July 6, 2009 5:14 PM

Is that a scar on the underside Alice's arm or a shadow (or my shitty computer)?

I'm glad Burton isn't exactly remaking the Alice in Wonderland story, which would immediately set him up for failure in so many (more) people's minds. That was a large problem for me with Chocolate Factory anyway. This will provide some freedom for him.

Posted by: JustMo at July 6, 2009 5:17 PM

Can we pull our collective heads out of Depp/Burtons's ass for a moment and acknowledge how big of a piece of shit this is going to be? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory proved he's past it, and hammered the last nail in the coffin that is the Depp/Burton collaboration.

Posted by: Jack Random at July 6, 2009 8:03 PM

2. Mathew McFayen (or however it's spelled)

Matthew MacFayden.

I also don't know how I feel about Tim Burton movies anymore. :/ Things such as quirky eccentricities in the storylines and Johnny Depp should never be followed or preceded with a sigh or a ".. meh." Now, it's all just fodder for the next line of merchandise at Hot Topic.

Posted by: duckandcover at July 6, 2009 8:10 PM

Other big foreheads:

Christina Ricci

Biggest of all:

Mina Suvari.

Posted by: figgy at July 6, 2009 9:12 PM

Pretty Freaky Deaky looking all right.
I love it when Tim Burton does what he's supposed to.

Posted by: Odnon at July 6, 2009 11:43 PM

Tim Burton gives me such a boner. And I am a girl.

Posted by: K at July 7, 2009 6:15 AM

Does Alice in Wonderland really need the Hook treatment? Does anything really need the Hook treatment? I'm fairly certain Hook didn't need the Hook treatment.
