Monuments Men Trailer: Clooney, Damon, Goodman, Bill F---ing Murray

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | August 8, 2013 | Comments ()

Well, you could watch the trailer for Monuments Men, the Clooney directed feature starring Matt Damon, John Goodman, Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Bill Murray, or you could just put down your laptop and walk straight to the theater and wait outside until it opens in December. Movie trailers like this really should just have credit card swipers attached to it.

What’s it about? Based on a true story, it’s about a group of fellas who basically rescue plundered art from Nazi Germany and protect 1000 years of culture. In other words, it’s Ocean’s 11 set during World War II.

Good enough for me.

    "This video does not exist."

  • logan

yeah we will be seeing this at the theater opening weekend.

HEY! Wait a minute! How is it were just now hearing about this Pajiba?

  • TCH

So Monuments Men is Inglorious Bastards but with Art Geeks?

  • Dad's Army right?

They don't like it up 'em.

  • the chaplain

    Don't forget, JEAN DUJARDIN!

  • Conor

So... It's The Flying Hellfish with Clooney, Goodman and Murray.

    SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD!

  • kerokan

How did this cast make this movie and I never heard about it before?

  • Guest

    Meh... Where's Rusty?

Unless its a Quentin Tarantino film (or even it is) can we stop the trend of using non period music in period films?

    Thank you.

*If I wasn't sick of WWII movies (specifically ones where Muricans are portrayed as the only ones fighting the good fight) I'd probably see this.

  • George Tarleton

Interesting criticism. What about original scores in historical films, if it's a musical style that wasn't around 70 years ago? Is that different? If so, why?

  • mograph

    Kelly's Heroes. Discuss.

  • George Tarleton

I loved the music in that movie. I thought it quite innovative.

  • Guest

If it's an original score I'm willing to give it a little more leeway but it still shouldn't happen and no it's not different.

In this instance taking a song from 2009 and dropping it into a WWII movie is definitely a NO.

  • George Tarleton

Well, I certainly respect your dedication to historical fidelity, even if I think it's a bit overboard. I think that you're allowed a certain degree of artistic interpretation (within reason).

Example, the use of Jay-Z's Brooklyn Go Hard in the recent trailer for 42 was a little jarring, but it actually worked for me because it felt... I don't know - relevant somehow. That said, I'd make that one the exception and not the rule.

I guess the catch is that if you're opposed to even original scores, that's just one less creative opportunity for the film makers, which is kind of a shame.

  • Mike Dubs

I agree it looks great, but that scene with Clooney and Damen at the bar in the beginning... are they purposefully doing a Ocean's Spoof? It's a little too close for comfort.

  • Bodhi

I tried SO HARD to read the book, but it got to dry for me & I had to put it down. This looks AHAMZING, however & I will be seeing it in theaters!

  • There were parts that I struggled with but it was still a good read. I have however been happy dancing about this movie since I finished the book this winter.

  • gelis

    Jean du Jardin!

  • JenVegas

My god, I think someone finally managed to make a movie that my husband and I can both enjoy watching at the same time without any irony in either of our enjoyment. Merry Christmas to US!

  • InqMind

Wait, so how does one get off a landmine once you've stepped on it? They can't let Private Ryan die.

  • kirivinokur

Replace Damon with a bag of sand, Indiana Jones style.

  • Maguita NYC

I cannot believe I looked-up "How to disable a landmine"! The crap I saw and the weirder crap I read.

And since you asked and I looked it up:

For disabling, you need a GPR device (focuses radar energy just below the ground and just a few feet in front of the user) that would shoot two chemical agents into the ground to deactivate it. One agent solidifies the triggering mechanism along with surrounding soil, allowing soldiers to cross the ground. The second chemical agent then solidifies the mine and soil permanently. The mine can then be shoveled out and destroyed.

Also, Depending on the type of mine some have tiny wire prongs on top that detonate instantaneously as the foot catches them, or the pressure plate is designed to detonate as it takes the downward weight.

So the trick will be to take your foot off the pressure plate and replace it with a "bag of stuff". Best though to tie a rope around your waist, get down as low as possible and get 10+ of your buddies, or a hummer, to haul your ass outta there with a quick yank, hopefully not landing on a second mine.

If you want to know more about landmines, I found answers here: http://science.howstuffworks.c...

Now the big question, did they have a GPR device with them in the movie? I'll be washing my eyes with some naive anime for a while.

  • BendinIntheWind

I really have no more valid commentary than the fact that I adore absolutely everything about this trailer.

...except for the "s" on "Monument" because I keep thinking I'm misreading it, and then I feel dumb.

  • BWeaves

It doesn't roll off the tongue well with that "S" on the end.

  • pajiba

Me too. I had to double check like three times.

  • Wigamer

I grow weary of Clooney's head-shaking acting style, but I can definitely set that aside for the promise of more Murray.

  • kirivinokur

Same here (as well as his speaking style). Didn't Spielberg already tell him to quit that mannerism if he wanted to really succeed? But I generally like him so this I'll watch.

  • George Tarleton

Given Clooney's success, I'd say that advice can go ignored without issue.

  • TheOriginalMRod

    And Bob Balaban!!! Hello!!!!?

  • Bea Pants

Have I ever mentioned that I have a degree in history? I have a degree in history and this movie just made my heart sing. I'm so there.

  • Jiffylush

Do not snub the Balaban, he is standing right there!

  • TheOriginalMRod

Yeah, I didn't see that you had already started the Bababan love...

  • No Pithy Name

Seconded. Or, rather, fifthed, by the number of likes ahead of me.

  • ,

I've read one of the books about this mission, and hope the movie does it justice. It's a fascinating story. The Nazis decided to abscond with the entire culture of Europe and were well on their way to getting it all. When it was clear the end was coming, some of them decided to destroy huge collections of it.

The Monuments Men (and there were only a handful for all of Europe) came in right behind the advancing Allied lines to account for what was still standing, what wasn't worth trying save and what was gone. Then they tried to find what was gone and return it to the rightful owners. There was also an exceptionally brave woman at IIRC the Louvre who used the Nazis' fetish for paperwork against them to stall the thievery and ultimately save a trainload of artifacts.

Cast looks terrific, of course. Gives me great hope they'll get this right.

  • Dennis

According to IMDB, the character played by Cate Blanchett is Rose Vallard, the woman in your story

  • kirbyjay

Would love to read that. Do you remember the title?

  • Read it, it's AWESOME. Edsel's been continuing as well.

  • ipomoea

Also check out the doc Rape of Europa, about both the Nazi's systematic looting of Europe's art, and the efforts to save it and recover it. It's streaming on Netflix and is just amazing.

  • jennp421

There's a review for it on the Cannonball Read site! Here it is: http://cannonballread5.wordpre... - but to answer your question, the book is also called Monuments Men, it is sitting in my to read pile, and I think he just recently released another one because I saw a hardcover by the author in the bookstore a few weeks ago.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

Anyone willing to pitch in to help me pay the vagrancy fines? Because I'm pretty sure theaters won't let me camp out nearly five months in advance.

But I'm going to. Because that trailer just happened. It was a real thing.

  • lowercase_ryan

We need to organize a food drop for you.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

I'd appreciate that. How about, like, replica K-rations? It will get me in the mindset for the film.

  • lowercase_ryan

good thinking. You might also want to see about picking up a WW2 uniform.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

I think I'll plant landmines around my encampment as well, to discourage all but the first wave of police trying relocate me.

  • Jen

The choice of music for the trailer is odd and .......that's all I got

  • Guest

Yep, I really wish they would stop doing that.

  • BWeaves

Yes, something 1940's ish would have been nice. There was some great music back then.

  • lowercase_ryan

So much yes. All of the Yes. And we hardly saw any of Bill Murray in the trailer, because they are saving that for those that buy tickets yes? You don't just give the Bill away.

  • kirivinokur

I'm not part of the hardcore Bill Murray Fan Club, so what I wanted more of was Cate Blanchett.

  • lowercase_ryan

    wait, what? that's possible?

  • Guest

It sure is lrc... I'm with kirivinokur on this one.

  • Oh my god.

This just jumped to the top of my "MUST SEE" list.
