Michael Scott's Replacement on "The Office" Very Well Could Be ...

Word from The Hollywood Reporter is that the lead contender for the replacement of Steve Carrell’s departed Michael Scott is … Catherine Tate. We knew that she, along with a slew of others, would be guest starring in the finale, presumably as one of the many interview candidates, and I’d expressed hope over on the Twitters that she’d land the gig, although I presumed it was a long shot. Apparently, not so. She is the producers top pick. The catch is a scheduling conflict — she’s doing Much Ado About Nothing over in England with David Tennant (!), which could prevent her from taking the gig.

Apparently, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, and Craig Robinson have also expressed interest, and of those, only Robinson makes any sense, but even then, I’m not sure how his laid back management style make jibe with “The Office” sense of humor. James Spader is also still under consideration, but his sense of humor is far more suited to dark comedies or dramas. Will Arnett apparently was a real possibility until his sitcom got picked up.

Catherine Tate could be an excellent addition: Brash, vulgar, and a little dim could complement Michael Scott’s style without upending it. She’s also very funny. Here’s a taste of what she might bring to “The Office”:

Tit Wank, indeed.

I REALLY want it to be Spader. I need him back on my tv pronto.

That other "girl" is surely a dude, right? She could be an offensive lineman in the NFL!

If it opens the door for a Tennant guest spot, I may have to start watching the Office again.

It'd be cool to get a chance to see Tate in a non-Who role too. I get the impression most of her stuff is much different than Donna.

Soooo if Donna takes over The Office does that mean that there could be a Doctor Who/The Office mash-up episode? Sorry, sorry. I am slightly obsessed with DW these days...it's an affliction.

They have to at least give a shout out when reading her credentials: fastest typing temp in Chiswick.

This would be a great move--I adore Catherine Tate.

For a second, I got excited, because for some reason, I read that as Catherine O'Hara. I don't know why. But DAMN would that be a show I'd watch.

Huzzah! I love Donna...er...Catherine! I think she would do a smashing good job.

I will be extremely bovvered if she doesn't get the role.

Damn, you Who-philes ruin everything. I really don't want any new cast member in that spot. It's too far down the road to be adding a high profile newbie, so I'm still pulling for Darryl, or, if need-be, Jim or Pam, to get the manager gig. I'd welcome a new cast member to replace them in their respective office roles, but not as manager, unless they want the new manager to have as big a role as Gabe, then maybe. Maybe.

Honestly, last week's episode showed that the series doesn't need new blood. It sounds purely like an NBC desire to boost ratings, and nothing to do with the quality or narrative of the show itself.

Good to see The Office getting back to its BBC roots.

More importantly: Catherine Tate and David Tennant in Much Ado?! This could possibly rival Kenneth Brannagh and Emma Thompson! I may have to fly to the West End for this one.

I guess I'm Jonesing to hop the Pond for some Noble... There's a better joke with more puns in there somewhere, I just know it. Alas, I have grown-up work to do.

We understand. It's lunch time and your too Tylered out from all the work you've been doing.

Either everyone's Roryng with laughter, or we totally killed this thread.

That might be a move that would actually make me start watching The Office!

Donna is probably my favorite nuWho companion. I love Catherine Tate.

Granted, I would LOVE to see Spader back on my TV, but he needs his own show.

Glad to see everyone Rose to the occasion with the puns.

Catherine Tate. Is. Not. Funny. You're getting sucked in by the British accent, my yankee friends (I'm British, btw). She's just annoying. Her sketch show over here was terrible, and her run on Dr Who was the time I stopped watching. Awful, awful, talentless, awful woman.

Posted by: Bronson at May 19, 2011 2:17 PM

Bronson >> Did you watch series 4, or did you cut out because Tate was in it without giving her a chance? I was dreading her addition but ended up pleasantly surprised and enjoyed Donna Noble quite a bit.

ShagEaredVillain >> "Rorying with laughter." Nice.

Wow, that would be the worst thing that could happen to The Office. While I don't find Catherine Tate particularly funny, the biggest problem is that with Steve Carell gone, the ratings are going to go down the shitter. While she may be famous overseas, she would do nothing to help bolster the ratings here. That being said, none of the other candidates would do very much either (with the exception of Ray Romano or Jim Carrey who don't really fit with the style of the show)

Are you disrepectin' me, then?

What a fucking liberty!

Of course, Nan could be the new boss's gran...

Michael Scott's Replacement will be a show thats actually entertaining and not some over hyped rip off of a british show that wasn't funny.

Posted by: clancys_daddy at May 19, 2011 8:35 PM

I stopped watching years ago.
