McConaughey Takes A Shot At Legitimacy, Still Comes Off A Little Sleazy (And Yet, It Works): Trailer And First Clip Of Killer Joe

Little has been said about William Friedkin’s upcoming Killer Joe, set to debut at TIFF later this month. There was a time when a new Friedkin picture would fill folks with anticipation, back in the heyday of The Exorcist and The French Connection. But that was before he directed films like Blue Chips and, God help us, Jade. Hell, most recently he’s been directing episodes of “CSI.”
But there’s a good bit of potential in his newest effort, Killer Joe, about “when a debt puts a young man’s life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.” What’s left out of that synopsis is that the hitman (Matthew McConaughey) wants to take the young man’s (Emile Hirsch) sister as collateral (played by Juno Temple). The film co-stars Gina Gershon and Thomas Hayden Church, and that right there is some solid damn casting.
The first clip, seen below, is a nice one. It’s understated, a bit of subtlety, and McConaughey is finally breaking free of his skeezy romcom role. Take a look:

There’s also a pretty decent poster:

Can't watch the trailer now, but is that the worst poster tagline ever because of the implied cannibalism? Or the best poster tagline ever because of the implied cannibalism?
