Marvel Movies A-Plenty

Jesus Christ. It’s no wonder sites like Superherohype exist. You could turn news about superhero projects into a full-time goddamn job. Anyway, in the interest of getting all the geek news centralized a bit, I figured we’d just run through all the Marvel-based superhero news in one fell sweep. Ready, nerdlingers?

Starting with the good, because I am a kind and benevolent master:

Production on 2011’s Thor is rolling, and they are casting like a motherfucker. We already reported that Chris Hemsworth (Kirk Sr. in the JJ Abrams Star Trek was playing the God of Thunder, and that Natalie Portman had been cast as Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest. Also, Brian Blessed will play Odin (perfect casting, if you ask me), and relative newcomer Tom Hiddleston will play the evil trickster god Loki. Now, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jamie Alexander will play Sif, the Asgardian warrior who’s another love interest, as well as a serious ass kicker in the comics, and Colm Feore will play the villain. The Feore bit is particularly interesting — the man’s a great actor, but takes some shit roles (War Games: The Dead Code, anyone?). Also, I’d like to take this opportunity to say, “Please, for the love of all things holy, no Beta Ray Bill.”

Up next, Deadpool news. We talked a couple of days ago about how Fox had plans to fuck up develop Deadpool, and they are moving on that, though it’ll likely be delayed by his role as DC’s The Green Lantern. But the good news is that, based on tweets (oh, fuck me. I can’t believe I’m reporting on announcements made on Twitter) by original creator Rob Liefeld, it’s moving in the right direction. After his meeting with super-producer Lauren Shuler Donner, he announced that yes, Deadpool will wear the costume, and yes, he will break the fourth wall as he does so brilliantly in the comics. This is good news. But don’t worry, it’s Fox. They’ll still ruin it.

Moving on: Columbia has its own hideously adapted franchises to inflict upon us. First, they are indeed going ahead with Ghost Rider 2, and it will unfortunately star Nicholas Cage again. For those who may have forgotten, Ghost Rider was a top contender for worst comic book movie imaginable, and would easily win the prize if not for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. David Goyer (all three Blade movies) is in talks to write the script. Secondly, they’re talking about another Daredevil movie, though it’s unclear if it’ll be a sequel to the weak Ben Affleck version, or a reboot. I’m hoping for a reboot. Let Affleck direct it or something, but keep him out of the suit. The Man Without Fear deserves better.

Finally, Columbia is also working on developing a Silver Surfer film.

I have no idea how to deal with that information. The Surfer is easily one of the most difficult characters to develop — most of his adventures take place in space, he has ridiculous powers, he works for a giant planet-eater who wears a weird purple hat, and he’s naked and silver all the time. Who the hell knows where they’ll take that one, although Fox (surprise) did a pretty bang-up job of fucking up that character in their atrocious Fantastic Four sequel.

Oh, and Entertainment Tonight, one of the most annoying shows in the history of everything, is premiering video of their set visit to Iron Man 2 tonight, at 7:30 EST. It will likely contain little of substance, too many unnecessary graphics, and reporters so irritating that I’ll wish for their larynx’s to explode live on television. Here’s the sneak preview:

I am so glad we're finally going to see Deadpool on the big screen. This is a character with so much flavor and personality, it's hard to believe it's taken so long for him to appear in a movie.

(Once again the devil perches himself on my sinister shoulder and whispers in my ear that Deadpool already appeared in a movie called X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He's telling me that he was mute and that he somehow had heat vision. He's telling me that Deadpool was beheaded at the end of the movie and that any subsequent film would have to be another prequel. A prequel to a prequel. The devil thinks it's great, but I think it's all lies and deception.)

Oh, and with accolades by Rob Leifield, how could it NOT be great? I mean, Rob Leifield is so talented! He invented Deadpool, who has circles over his eyes, Domino, who has a circle over her eye, The Reaper, whose one eye has a circle around it, and Cable, whose eyes have scars and glow. He's such a creative mastermind.

My eyes drip with sarcasm. It's a superpower.

What's wrong with Beta Ray Bill?

Wait. What? It's like I don't even know you anymore.

Mini-div: Things I would rather watch then a Ghostrider or Daredevil sequal? I'll go first.

Bea Arthur and Margaret Thatcher wrestling nude in a Care Bear kiddie pool full of KY and pudding while Dick Cheney pulls his tiny penis and cackles like The Penguin. And I mean Bea Arthur today. Right now.

Brian Blessed will play Odin

Right on.

I remember going to the cinema (probably a bit drunk) and rather enjoying Ghost Rider. I'm not sure why it's hated so much. Probably because it has Nicholas Cage in it.

That's the fourth wall..

When will Hollywood introduce the movie going public to female super heros? And please don’t you guys trot out “Wonder Woman” with her invisible air plane and her latent lesbian tendencies. I want Hollywood to put as much thought into the female character as they would put into showing the complexities of a tortured “Dark Knight.”

Best Odin casting ever! Brian Blessed is going to ROCK that part! *happy dance*

Posted by: Chickaboom at September 24, 2009 11:02 AM

Also, Brian Blessed BRIAN BLESSED will play Odin

There. Fixed it for ya.

A Liefeld endorsement is worth about as much as a Ratner endorsement to me. Overrated hack. And as superasente said, the man has a thing for eye circles. And Botox-ravaged super-small mouths.

Now if Fabian Nicieza, Joe Kelly, or Gail Simone give a thumbs up, I might lose some skepticism.

So much superhero news. Are the Wonder Twins holding out for more money before they'll accept a movie deal?

Also, Brian Blessed BRIAN BLESSED will play Odin

There. Fixed it for ya.

Now that is hilariously well played, V. Maybe we'll get a "Thor's alive?!" out of it.

"When will Hollywood introduce the movie going public to female super heros?"

Um, HELLO? Catwoman? What else do you want? Sheesh.

Oh, come on, Vermillion. Liefeld isn't overrated. There would have to be somebody still saying his "artwork" was anything but crap for that to be true.

I'm not ashamed to say I LOVE Beta Ray Bill. Just as badass as Thor, but with a triumph and tragedy all his own. Nothing Walt Simonson ever did on Thor was less than great, and Bill's no exception. (I even think his sci-fi/mundane name has a neat ring to it.)

Strange, though, that "Colm Feore will be playing the villain." Meaning Loki isn't going to be the main bad guy in a movie about Thor?

Posted by: Todd at September 24, 2009 12:30 PM

OH Rob Leifeld says it is going in the right direction? OH GLORY BE...it will be the best of the best of crap made to shine. I mean, thighs the size of trees. The guy was a joke and became even more of a joke when he thought he could write. After he and the king of comic Douche's Todd McFarlane (only a hair above Chris Claremont) made Image with the rest of them, i walked away for a good bit. But that is beside the point.

Youngblood = Suck! Heroes Reborn = Suck. Anything with Rob Liefeld attached to it = SUCK!

There...my 90's comic rant of hate is over..more to come

Posted by: Guinness Leary at September 24, 2009 12:52 PM

I have no idea what y'all are talking about, but you had me at BRIAN BLESSED!!

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at September 24, 2009 1:13 PM

Wow, I love the vitriol that spews when Mr. Liefeld's name is mentioned. I was a big fan of his until, well, until I actually read his comics again not wishing they were any good. I agree with Vermillion and Guinness: an endorsement by Liefeld that "things are going in the right direction" is anything but a good sign. With that, I'm calling it: Deadpool is going to suck balls.

Posted by: Darcy M. at September 24, 2009 1:15 PM

No need to duck TK, your feeble attempt at sarcasm doesn’t warrant a serious response.

Posted by: Nancy at September 24, 2009 1:21 PM

I mean, I get that they're trying to adapt the comic book and not the mythology, but is there really any excuse for casting BRIAN BLESSED as anyone other than Thor?

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at September 24, 2009 2:58 PM

On the whole Rob Leifield eye circle thingy...
well thats certainly true...
but his far more over-the-top-edness "I know this is a Leifield drawing" take away point is pouches...
dude loves him some pouches, Cable had like 80 on him in any piece of Leifield art, to accentuate his hundred year old oak tree thighs.
Even a guest spot on DC he drew a Robin with an ungodly amount of pouches on his utility belt.
So a Leifield stamp of approval guarantees one thing above all else... the power of pouches.
Deadpool... drowning in pouches
