Martin Freeman, who will be appearing in next week’s Saturday Night Live and the final Hobbit movie in the trilogy (for now) is doing press rounds this week, though based on his comments to Buzzfeed, he’d probably rather be doing anything else. And who can blame him? It’s not a fun time in our history. For anyone. And Freeman thinks that we should be talking about things that matter — like Ferguson, like Eric Garner — instead of why a part of Sherlock’s shoulder is missing in a promo ad.

“I know that presentation matters, that publicity matters, that it would be crazy to think that publicity doesn’t matter in 2014, it does,” he said. “I think in the course of the last few years — in my experience anyway — just being in two things that are really internet frenzy projects, it’s gone from being Oh, this is quite fun to being like Oh, this is the most important thing in the world. And I don’t quite understand that.”

“I don’t particularly like being one of the subjects,” he continued, “because I know I am not worthy of it.”

I get that. I do. But I also think compartmentalization is valuable. Because right now it’s hard as hell to consume any cultural products without seeing them through the lens of racial injustice.

“I also think so many political experts who find nothing more important to talk about than me and Sherlock, you know what I mean? If you are so massively dedicated to Ferguson, or social justice or whatever, why are you writing about two middle-class white boys again? Do something else with your time.”

I get that frustration, but I also understand that these frivolous thoughts about Sherlock’s shoulder or who will die next on The Walking Dead offer brief respites from the real world, from the news media, from Joe fucking Scarborough and Peter fucking King. It’s harder than ever to deal with the blowhards and idiots on our television screens and in our Facebook feeds. We need Sherlock’s missing shoulder just to get through the goddamn day.
