We're Running Out of Ideas!

Short films are going to be the next source of Hollywood inspiration, it appears. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of low-budget, science fiction-themed short films scattered about — on the web, on Youtube, in film festivals, you name it. Hollywood, ever vigilant for new ideas to seize and develop, is watching and the newest one to get picked up appears to be The Raven.
According to Latino Review, Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to Ricardo de Montreuil’s short film The Raven, about a young man with strange powers on the run from the government. Mark Wahlberg is apparently in talks to star and produce, and in a nifty little success story, Montreuil himself may direct the full-length feature. Filmed for $5000 and shot over the course of a weekend in Los Angeles, The Raven will be fleshed out into a full story by Justin Marks.
There are two problems, however. One, the film itself is interesting, but hardly original. The short film is a neat one, and the effects are impressive given the budget, but it’s not exactly going to show us anything new. It’s part inFamous (the video game that’s also been picked up by studios), part… well, part a lot of things. Take a look:
Like I said, not exactly treading new ground. The second, and bigger, problem, is the screenwriter. Justin Marks is most recently responsible for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which has the incredulous title of worst video game adaptation ever.
That’s really saying something.
We’ll see what happens.
