Anne Hathaway's Got A Fight On Her Hands as Marion Cotillard is in Talks to Join Batman 3

I admit, this story is just a convenient excuse to post a picture of Marion Cotillard. I don’t think I can be faulted for that. Regardless, the casting rumor machine for The Dark Knight Rises continues to churn at a ridiculous pace — I think that this and Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man Of Steel probably keep the rumor mill running on overdrive more than any other films right now.

For a while now, there have been reports that Nolan’s next and final entry in the Batman series involved two main female leads. Anne Hathaway has already been cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and now French newspaper Le Figaro (later confirmed by THR) is reporting that Marion Cotillard (Inception, Public Enemies) will be the second lead. I’ve got no complaints whatsoever — she’s a stellar actress, she was fascinating in Nolan’s Inception, and she’ll certainly class up the joint.

Of course, the question that arises is — will she survive? Nolan has a bizarre tendency to kill off his female leads, so who knows whether or not she’ll escape unscathed. Of course, the other big question is — who the hell is she going to play? Is she going to be the love interest? Who knows. But I know this:

Nothing bad can come of this.

Marion Cotillard is pregnant right now. I don't know when filming actually begins so I'm unsure as to whether it makes a difference if she's up the duff. I can't seem to remember a pregnant hero or villian, but I must admit that I'm a bit behind on my comic book nerdin'.

I was just Googling her last night and was wondering why she wasn't cast as Catwoman.

Maybe she'll be a pregnant Mama Wayne in a flashback?

Posted by: Sars at February 14, 2011 11:08 AM

Talia Al Ghul. Don't forget that Neeson was actually a Frenchman by the name of Alain Ducard in Batman Begins. And he mentioned his dead wife and daughter all-too-briefly.

LET'S GET SPECULATIN'!

Talia hires/manipulates/creates Bane to give Bruce the physical challenge he's never had, secretely working behind the scenes to destroy Gotham once and for all. Meanwhile, Selina works as a cat burglar, tempting our boy Bruce with her large breasts cunning wit and guile, eventually teaming up to help him. Meanwhile, Gordon works against and with the cops, who may or may not be aided by the uncast Hugo Strange (or JGL as an anti-Batman detective?)

Batman punches things. Redemption. Roll credits.

I'm happy with her being cast especially if it's going to be Talia but honestly I'd rather she play Selina. Now I'm wondering if they are bringing Ras Al Ghul back as well.

Marion Cottilard as Talia? Yes, please. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go change my underwear.

Also, I'm deeply upset that you didn't include a link to a high-res version of that full length shot.

This makes me very happy. If Cotillard is cast it will be even easier to ignore Hathaway's presence.

Typical Nolan Cocksucker Fanboy:

This is the greatest casting ever in the history of Hollywood. Nolan does no wrong. Even his worst film makes Citizen Kane and The Battleship Potemkin combined look like whale shit. If Nolan were to fart in my face, it would smell like some kind of ambrosia of the Gods. I do not need a wife or children since Nolan gifted us with Inception. When someone sneezes, I say, "Nolan bless you." I wish Nolan would bank in my mouth so that I, too, might become immortal.

I guess Talia makes a ton more sense than Mama Wayne.

The question that now comes to mind is why/how Marion has got the Frahnszh lady market cornered? I really like Melanie Laurent as well as Virginie Ledoyen, and there are innumerable others out there (who was the actress in Tell No One?), so I wonder how much consideration other actresses get when Marion seems to be the automatic go-to gal.

I read SPECULATIN' as SPECULUM in DDay's comment and, let me tell you, it cast quite a different light on the post and commentary.

Sars - I guess you mean Marie-Josée Croze, who was also in "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" and "Munich". I think she's technically French-Canadian though.

I think French actresses do ok - acting all sophisticated for Hollywood is just a small part of the work available to them.

I LOVE Marion Cotillard, this news makes me very happy indeed.

Case. Case Case Case. I appreciate that you (apparently) don't care for Nolan's direction. Good on ya'. But why feel the need to spew such vitriol on those of us who are fans? Is it not enough that people have differences of opinion? Must everyone feel the way you feel? You don't see the rest of us shitting all over -- let's see, what's the opposite of Christopher Nolan -- over Brian Levant, director of Problem Child 2, Beethoven, Flintstones, and Snow Dogs, do you? No! I'm sure he's delivered more than a few of your favorite movies and no-one wants to take that away from you. We just want you to be happy! See? Be happy!

Anyway. Best wishes, pal. Happy Valentine's Day.

Cotillard's preggers now, Pinky? Hmm.

I can see a pregnant heroine or villainess, actually. She's locked in a death struggle with the Good Guy when suddenly he doubles over in pain, grasping his crotch.

She looks down to see a tiny fist protruding from her womb, smiles fondly and says, "That's my girl!."

D-Day: That's basically what I was thinking, though, I read somewhere that JGL is rumored to be playing Alberto Falcone, son of the Roman (Tom Wilkinson from Batman Begins). If so, I wonder if he'd be the one teaming up with Talia(?) in the same way their parents did, with Bane coming from his side of the alliance?

However, if Cotillard doesn't play Talia, I can see how Bane, Falcone, and Catwoman could be combined to do a mix of Knightfall and Long Halloween. Cotillard as Sofia Gigante? (/rimshot)

Either way, TK is right on the money: Marion Cotillard is a win.

Posted by: RobP at February 14, 2011 2:20 PM

Yeah someone pointed out the Falcone link to me today. And then someone slipped into Alberto's Wikipedia page, and yes I know it's Wikipedia.

I'm sticking to the Talia hope because it brings the trilogy full circle. However, they're packing this thing full of so many damn characters it might be 4 hours long. Which I'm totally okay with. Now if they could only change the film title...

Posted by: D-Day at February 14, 2011 2:31 PM

RobP: I've been having a very Long Halloween suspicion about this new Batman ever since they announced Catwoman as female lead No. 1. And I'm definitely not complaining since it's such a great story...and Nolan's utilized it more than once in his trilogy so far. Though, they'd have to leave out the whole and rather integral Harvey Dent part of it (since they already kind of used that up in the last film.) Here's to hoping?

Posted by: kiyo-chan at February 14, 2011 3:35 PM

Nolan has a bizarre tendency to kill off his female leads, so who knows whether or not she’ll escape unscathed.

Is this Nolan or Frank Miller? Or is it both, and that's why Nolan is so suited for this material?

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at February 14, 2011 4:09 PM

Thanks, Simon. I know the French actresses do fine without the US of A, but there are plentyof them who can cross over, if only for a little bit. I could really see a lot more of Marie-Josée Croze.

Posted by: sars at February 14, 2011 4:27 PM

Talia al Ghul preggers with Damian? Fairly recent development so far as the comic's history, but it might make sense.

Posted by: Bert at February 14, 2011 4:28 PM

crud, i thought Anne got booted off and Marion was replacing her.

why Anne, Nolan? Why?

how am i suppose to keep a serious face if all I see is the Bat-Man and the Princess of Genovia?

Posted by: haplo at February 14, 2011 5:26 PM

@haplo, I was hoping the same. I see gawky teenager in a plaid skirt every time I see Anne Hathaway. She's a good actress, I just can't help it.

This news is the best film news I've heard all week. So excited.

Cotillard can do anything. Make it happen, Nolan!

Posted by: Parker at February 14, 2011 5:43 PM

I'm already excited about this movie, but this casting news makes me even more excited.
YAY.

Case, man (or lady)we get it. You don't care for Nolan.
Move on,already.

Posted by: thecurious(CaseCrum) at February 14, 2011 7:27 PM

I don't know who this lady is, but she has no arms in that top photo!

Posted by: Snuggiepants at February 14, 2011 9:38 PM

tell me about it Parker.

and i know ppl will refer back to the initial hate for Ledger but you din see him in Dark Knight. the paint and scar din remind you of the cowboy or the kid who sang, "Can't take my eyes of off you"

maybe we'll never see Anne's full face. yes! that's it! let her be behind the mask the entire time. and pls dun let her smile. not that gorgeous smile.

Posted by: haplo at February 14, 2011 10:02 PM

I could really see a lot more of Marie-Josée Croze.

Posted by: sars at February 14, 2011 4:27 PM

sars - I confess I've seen quite a lot of her already. Like many stars of French movies, she's not shy about showing her bits and pieces.
