Machete Gets the Green Light. So Does a Predator Sequel / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | April 28, 2009 | Comments (24)

It seems that Robert Rodriguez has spent the better part of the last two years either filming his silly looking kids movie, Shorts, or planning a ton of other projects. He has, at one time or another, been attached to two Sin City sequels (neither of which have been officially greenlit), a Barbarella remake, a sci-fi flick called Nerverackers, and even a movie version of The Jetsons.

This summer, it looks like Rodriguez will actually step behind the camera again. Scheduled to begin shooting in June, Rodriguez will co-direct (along with his long time editor, Ethan Maniquis) a full-length movie of Machete, working from his own script. As you’ll recall from Grindhouse, Machete was one of those fake trailers, which starred Danny Trejo as a “Mexican ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, who is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator.” Here’s that trailer. It’s pretty goddamn rad:

In addition to that, Rodriguez has also written the script for a Predator remake. (He wrote a script for Predator 3 that was never used). And while Predators already has a July 2010 release date, it’s not immediately clear if Rodriguez will actually direct the film. He is, after all, currently set to direct every other movie planned to come out over the next three years. Currently, he’s only attached as a producer.

Please! Isn't there one scrap of good news out there in entertainment land? A morsel? A tidbit? A dust speck?

Posted by: Cindy at April 28, 2009 8:14 PM

Sorry for the intelligence defying post up there, but it's a MOTHERFUCING Machete movie!

I do like that Predator will be a sequel rather than a remake, you just can't improve Predator. Sometimes, I even prefer it to Aliens.

You Fucked with the Wrong Mexican.

Boy, I've heard my wife say that to me a few times.

I misread the post, damn, it is a remake... but there will be a MOTHERaeioihliurthlip'fgdonskjerto;jfhjsalknkf

(pardon my interuption, Mr. George will promply be given a lombotomy.)

Is there a scarier man out there than Danny Trejo?

No, there isn't.

Holy crap, I was just wondering about this the other night. No shit. Mr Stardust and I came across Planet Terror on one of the movies channels and I thought to myself, "I wonder if Machete will ever see the light of day?....Probably not since Hollywood seems to be up it's own ass with remakes and sequels."

I'm so glad I was wrong.

There already was a Jetsons movie, and it included a terrifically awful Tiffany song on the soundtrack. Is Rodriguez planning a live-action version of The Jetsons? Please say he's not! Have we learned nothing from the two Flintstones movies???

Wasn't Eli Roth directing "Thanksgiving" as well? Are all of the Grindhouse trailers going to be made into movies?

my rodriguez/jetsons casting wish:

george: robert patrick
jane: marley shelton
judy: taylor dooley (lavagirl)
elroy: bruce willis
mr. spacely: kurt russell

You know, I really don't understand why everyone loves "Aliens" so much. . . . I enjoy the film, but it isn't the bee's knees or anything like that. The original, "Alien" is superb. Perhaps my problem is more with James Cameron. The only better-than-good movies he has done are the two Terminator films and "The Abyss". I still say "Titanic" is THE Comedy of the 90s. He pulled a fast one on the world with that cheese wheel of a movie.

Danny Trejo's head alone is scary is fuck.
Hola DEA!

Rodriguez has a Lucassian love for digital sets and apparently hates to leave Austin. So until he proves me wrong I'll remain less than enthused about Predators. Hopefully he knows enough to shoot Machete old school with a minimum of CGI.

*siiiigh*

But Predator doesn't need a remake!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at April 29, 2009 7:13 AM

When I saw the fake trailer for "Machete" before "Planet Terror," I said, "I would SOOOO go see this mother!" And now I CAN!!!!

WOO-HOO!!!

but, seriously, leave Predator alone.

and, gp, I love your casting!

Posted by: dammitjanet at April 29, 2009 9:11 AM

for some reason (pot), i was reading this last night as he wanted to make a predator SEQUEL, and i totally blocked out the remake factor.

now i wish *i* had a machete...

Posted by: gp at April 29, 2009 9:24 AM

Machete is also the name of his character in SpyKids. He is the kids' uncle who designs gadgets.

Posted by: luvtheshoes at April 29, 2009 10:43 AM

I'm hard. Like, ragingly hard. Is that wrong? The thought of Danny Trejo's pock-marked scrowl surrounded by explosions and lopping off random arms of corrupt, baddie politicians? Is that a weird reason to get a hard-on?

Well don't fucking judge me! At least it doesn't happen while watching Strawberry Shortcake.

... ...anymore.

Can I just say, as well as loving Danny Trejo for obvious reasons, how fucking cool is Jeff Fahey in this!?

Lawn Mower Man is a BADass mo-fo!

Posted by: Bane at April 30, 2009 7:43 AM

Oh Jeff Fahey BETTER be back for the full length! Though if I remember correctly, Rodriguez said he filmed a good half hour or so of a Machete movie when they did Grindhouse, so maybe it won't be that long of a production period. Either way, I think we need to see more Grindhouse movies as promised. I want to see DONT!, Thanksgiving, and of course Werewolf Women of the S.S. make it to the big screen as God intended.

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at April 30, 2009 10:20 AM

Amanda and I were really excited when we originally heard rumors that this would happen. I know she'd be disappointed to know that she'll miss it.

Personally, I'm so fucking excited I'm going to masturbate until I bleed!

Those wrinkles on his face are the real deal—cut so deep and in such troubling contours that you know you probably don't want to know where they really came from. Can't wait for this cool movie, finally they are making the mock trailer a real film. Danny is the best and the most love villain ever.
