Geeks Will Rule the World

But Do They Have to Use Macs? / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | October 17, 2008 | Comments (133)

What does a real geek use, anyway? A Mac or a PC? Enlighten us, Pajibageeks. I’d like to believe that all those geeks who grew up playing Doom on their PCs are loyal, but then again, I understand that Macs have better graphics cards (right?) Stylistically, I’m a Mac guy, but you know that gadget geeks are probably PC folks. A PC goes on the fritz, a good geek can save it. And while Macs are less susceptible to viruses and malfunction, if they do break down, you either have to track down an Apple store or, if you’re Apple Care has run out, toss your computer out the window. Can you tell I have no idea what I’m talking about?

So what’s the verdict? Mac or PC?

What’s the point to this post? Well here’s the trailer for the documentary Macheads, which is about — you guessed it: Apple. (*Chandler voice*) Could it be any more geeky?

I'm a PC person purely for work reasons. Very black and white government shit. I havent used a Mac in years so I am definately biased.

Mac users please answer a question for me. Why are some people so hepped up about Macs? I've seen people almost come to blows over this question. Does the Mac give good sucky, sucky or something?

Apple...the scientology of personal computers

Posted by: diablo at October 17, 2008 3:12 PM

I've used macs since juniour high and loved them ever since. They're definelty more appealing to look at. I've had my iBook g4 for almost 4 years. It's still running and working.

Posted by: carrie at October 17, 2008 3:14 PM

Mac. All the way. For my profession, it's a Mac. You can argue all you want for a PC, but Mac. Period. I hate the commercials (minus 1984). I hate how every other day, Jobs comes out with a new iPod. I hate the "hipness" of Macs. But I've worked on them for goddamed ever and there's absolutely no reason for me to switch now. It's not a novelty computer. It's not a funky way to express myself. It's a goddamed powerful machine that does exactly what I need. If they could attach a buhgooter to it, I'd friggin' marry one...

Although along that line of logic, if they attached a vagimana to a toaster, I'd marry it. Same goes for a can of Guinness, a pack of smokes, and a bag of charcoal...

feh. Everyone knows real geeks use Linux. (at home I have a pc with a linux virtual machine and at work I use a mac. I wonder what that makes me.)

Posted by: s. pisaster at October 17, 2008 3:16 PM

PC, for the same reasons as Admin11.

Posted by: Kolby at October 17, 2008 3:16 PM

Macs: Because PCs suck and what other choice is there.

Macs: Because even geeks think they are cool.

Macs: Because a better video card means better porn capabilities.

Macs: Because kids have been manipulating their parents for years.

I'm no geek, but my husband is - and we both use Macs. The no-virus thing is grand. It took me a while to get used to some of the oddities (taps, scrolling, two-finger right-click equivalent), but now I've seen the light. The keyboard is lovely. Having used many PCs over the years, I'd definitely say it's like going from a Ford to a Beamer. You know that's all we drive in Connecticut, don't you?

Posted by: Cindy at October 17, 2008 3:17 PM

I grew up using PCs and only started using Macs in college; they work better with editing softwares and such.

I just got my very first computer ever (which kinda feels like buying my first car or something) and it's a MacBook, because I intend to install Final Cut in it.

I don't care if it's geeky or cool or whatever; I just don't want it to get stuck, thank you very much.

Mac. For screenwriting and filmmaking, accept no substitutes.

Posted by: insertclevernamehere at October 17, 2008 3:21 PM

I used a Mac for work so when my Dell crashed on me for the 4th freakin time, I saw the light. The stark, depersonalized mac light. It has served me well, but I still feel like there's something missing to it...It just doesn't get me as an individual. So I stuff it with shit music and spores and sims.

Posted by: VeinsRHiways at October 17, 2008 3:22 PM

Macs. I used PCs only until a few years ago, and then switched over. Love Macs now and wouldn't consider going back.

I also agree that there is a huge degree of douchetasticness among many Mac users, though, and it generally does make me want to reach for the Tire Iron of Correction.

Posted by: kemp ridley at October 17, 2008 3:22 PM

PC for work. PC for home, because hubby needs it to connec to work. The one time I used a Mac, it made fake PC sounds, so what was the point?

The only thing I hate more than the stereotypical "hipster" is the "Hey, I'm a unique and quirky designer because I wear all black, have thick, chunky glasses, drive a neon-green VW bug, have a tangerine iBook decorated with Shepard Fairey artwork, and the Apple icon tattooed on my calf"... Guh. No. You're not unique. You're a goddam walking stereotype... You want to stand out? Refuse to fit in. The last time I was at an AIGA conference, I stuck out like a sore thumb - someone actually thought I worked at the resort. Fuckers...

Posted by: Skitz at October 17, 2008 3:25 PM

PC, switching over to Mac because the OS is more friendly for me, the non-techy geek.

My desktop PC can't find a damn thing on its own, always full of crappy programs that load themselves with the Windows OS that I don't need, takes way too long out of the box to get it set up initially, etc.

I bought a Mac laptop. Opened it up. It practically shook my hand and asked me if I wanted to get on the internet. No annoying programs I didn't want to install. No huge hassle trying to figure out IP addresses.

Mac just makes interacting with the computer easy, and as soon as I have the $ it's a Mac desktop all the way.

Posted by: twig at October 17, 2008 3:29 PM

Real geeks use Linux. I thought that was self-explanatory. They don't need to advertise Linux in any form because its built by the geeks, for the geeks. Then those geeks customize it and pass it on to other geeks, to the point that no two geeks have the same Linux.

It's kind of like Gremlins and water, only not as cool or interesting.

Posted by: boo at October 17, 2008 3:29 PM

Yeah, what kemp said - the douchetasticness runs deep - go into a Mac store and witness the overwhelming sense of quirk. Barf...

Posted by: Skitz at October 17, 2008 3:31 PM

PCs, at work and at home, but I bought my daughter a Mac.

I really don't like it much. While it's great as long as you're willing to always work with what you have and NEVER upgrade...I *like* doing upgrade stuff myself. You can't do that with a Mac. Not unless you spend a metric fuckton of cash.

But I'm a computer user since the days of punch cards...and still think all you need to give me is any half-way decent flavor of UNIX and a command line. So what do I know.

Posted by: Wednesday at October 17, 2008 3:34 PM

Pisaster, that's exactly what I was thinking. My husband is a hardcore Linux guy. Oh, and not that silly Ubuntu Linux either. No, it's got to be KDE Linux. I get regular lectures on why it's so awesome. (Fascinating, really....)

I use a PC (with Windows, which Allan grudgingly allows). But I'm only a biology geek, not a computer geek.

I've been an Apple user ever since my very young days with an Apple IIe back in the mid-80s. I've also used plenty of PCs for school and work. As far as user-friendliness and lack of technical problems go, the Mac wins by a landslide.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at October 17, 2008 3:41 PM

Oh boy, the Mac/Windows debate.

I totally agree that true geeks either use Linux or make their own fucking Operating Systems. Which is ridiculous.

For me, personally, a Mac is so intuitive to what I need. Editing, design, everything just makes sense in my brain.

That being said, I work at a software support company on campus and we have to use the Windows they give us. It's clunky, slow, and a pain in the ass half the time, but it works well for what it does. I understand the PC users have "different needs" that can be adequately fulfilled by the Windows OS, but if given the choice, I love my Mac.

But I swear to God if one more idiot comes into the lab and bitches at me that they can NEVER use a Mac because it comes standard with a one button mouse a will FUCKING CUT A BITCH.

Sheesh, it's ctrl+mouse click or put in a two button mouse or a mighty mouse. Fucking Computards.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 17, 2008 3:42 PM

PC. I don't design or produce shit, I don't download or install porn or games, and I don't give a shit about Firefox or Mozilla. All I do with my PC is check email, Mypace, and Facebook; read my favorite blogs and sites; and watch YouTube. I admit to hating my Dell, and I'll probably replace it with an HP, but give me IE and I'm set.

Posted by: Erin at October 17, 2008 3:43 PM

I'll tell you what a Mac is:

Is Steve Jobs spooging on your face and laughing all the way to the bank as you slather his man-milk all over your face.

You are not a "mac," you are a chump.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 17, 2008 3:43 PM

Mac users please answer a question for me. Why are some people so hepped up about Macs?

I can only speak for myself:
The Mac OS is Unix-based. I won't pretend to know all about what that means; what it means to a user is that the damn thing runs. Crashes and freeze-ups are virtually non-occurrences. On a normal day I'll have so many windows open (plus multiple browser tabs) it'd blow a poor PC user's mind.
The OS is also virtually hack-proof. It was designed secure, instead of retro-written. The Windows OS is so easy to compromise that middle-school kids do it on a regular basis. Another factor keeps Macs virus-free is the fact that they make up such a small percentage of the market--there's no return for serious, "professional" hackers to try to crack Macs. It's 1) far too difficult compared to PCs and 2) even if they succeed, they'll only have hacked into about 7% of the computers out there.
I actually have more face-time with PCs, because eight hours a day I'm on a PC at the office. Then I come home to my lovely, lovely Mac. I am a pretty typical user--i.e., not technically savvy--and the Mac is perfect for users like me. My poor elderly parents, who are galaxies less techy than I am, gave up on their THIRD shitty Dell computer and I talked them into replacing it with a Mac...They LOVE it.
The reason for the animosity between PC and Mac users is mostly a thing of the past. Before the Internet took over our lives, the two OS's were very incompatible, and people took sides. It's much easier to switch from one OS to the other than it used to be.

Synopsis: Stability & dependability of the OS; security, security, SECURITY; and ease of use for the geek deficient.

In my science world, the 'puters are half Mac, half PC, half Linux, half whatever they make up as they go along. True story.

PCs are unfriendly. Programmers for some science applications write with a SHITTY user interface (whatever the acronym I'm supposed to have used, please insert there).

My first computer at my high school was a Mac, and I've owned only Macs. Through and through. Currently typing on a Mac.

But I do have an ugly PC on my work desk too. Which crashes all the time, has annoying anti-virus alert shit that I don't know how to deactivate completely, is ugly, has too many cords for no reason whatsoever, takes up too much room, has annoying interface, icons, did I mention crashes all the time? And is ugly?

And I'm not a hipster, nor do I think it's "cool" to own a Mac. Macs are just pretty and work really well for the non-geeky me.

Posted by: Sandra at October 17, 2008 3:46 PM

Skitz--

I mean, dude, seriously. The smugness of the average Mac person kept me away from them for years. "Oh, look at me, I use a Mac, singing flowers and pretty children and magical hip pony friends follow me everywhere I go." Maddening, I tell you, maddening.

I'm glad I switched, though. Having to deal with craptacular douchenozzles and their "be a non-conformist just like me" attitudes is a cross worth bearing for computers that, you know, work. And are intuitive. And don't crash. And so on.

Posted by: kemp ridley at October 17, 2008 3:46 PM

Thanks, BSlim - that one works both ways!

Posted by: Skitz at October 17, 2008 3:47 PM

We've had PCs in my house since I was a toddler and they've been internet ready since I was 9. When I went to college the only thing I asked for was a Mac and I never looked back. I bought my latest one myself a year ago.

Yeah, some people can get a bit aggressive about them, but I've also taken shit from a lot of people who are PC lovers who simply can't believe that anyone anywhere could ever believe that a mac was a better computer for them. I don't try to convert people, I have my preference, other people have theirs, I don't see any need for there to be conflict or name calling from either side.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at October 17, 2008 3:49 PM

The Smart Car is the new VW bug. Be the envy of all of your mac-toting friends.

As for what a real geek prefers - the real question is what kind of geek?

Posted by: Lizella at October 17, 2008 3:50 PM

"...It was designed secure, instead of retro-written. The Windows OS is so easy to compromise that middle-school kids do it on a regular basis..."

Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffft

It wasn't designed "secure," the only reason it *feels* that way to that community is because it is just a marginal platform, for low-end users. No serious targeting has taken place by miscreants. Real work and PLAY get done on a PC.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 17, 2008 3:51 PM

PC.

I like to play computer games. There are more games for PCs. Sure, all the real good ones are made for Macs, but I like some more obscure and not so good games.

It's pretty much that simple. I don't do graphics or any of that stuff. I also work from home sometimes doing lawerly things and pretty much every firm uses PCs, so it's easier for that stuff too.

A one button mouse also confuses and terrifies me.

Posted by: ajax19 at October 17, 2008 3:52 PM

Don't let anybody fool you, for the last few years Macintosh computers use PC hardware. The only difference is software.

I'm a programmer, so at work I use Windows. And yes, it is a buggy piece of shit that has a lot of problems but most software (and almost all games) is still being made for it. Linux used to be for hardcore technophiles, but it's getting better (I still wouldn't install it on my Mom's computer, but maybe in a few years). Macintosh software is built for specific goals, and if that happens to match your needs you're not going to find anything better.

I tend to use all three operating systems. Windows for games, linux for programming and Mac for video, photo, and music editing.

Posted by: Dev at October 17, 2008 3:52 PM

I'm currently waiting out the short lifespan of my shitty Dell so I can use my friend's Apple Store discount and get myself a computer that will actually last a couple years. After the fifth guy I had come and replace my motherboard explained that the reason it kept breaking was because Dell was too cheap to add a couple screws, I decided it was time for a change.

Posted by: Macafee at October 17, 2008 3:53 PM

If you're PC breaks: hours upon hours on the phone while some dude who tries to small talk takes you step by step and you still have to wait for some part to come in the mail that you paid too much for.

If you're Mac breaks: take it to the apple store. If you want to be involved in the process, you can be. Either way you get free parking downtown! I kinda wish I had to go there right now...

Posted by: VeinsRHiways at October 17, 2008 4:00 PM

PC all the way, for the reasons already presented pertaining to hackability. When my computer crashes (which is extremely rare, by the way. I don't know what's up with everyone else's pcs) I get a kick out of digging through the various software and hardware levels available to the user on a PC. My friends Mac wouldn't connect to the internet one time and a 2 minute fix on a pc was impossible because I couldn't access the gateway and DNS settings.

Nothing really wrong with Macs for the average user though. And they're great for sound and video editing (or so I hear).

Posted by: the_wakeful at October 17, 2008 4:04 PM

(Nicole: I really like IE too, and my PC doesn't crash. Butterfly kisses!)

Posted by: Jay at October 17, 2008 4:15 PM

Mac totally. Here is the thing, before I got my current gig doing web design, I did tech support. I did mac tech support and pc (mostly Dell) support.

Troubleshooting swapping out hardware, upgrading hardware so super easy and downright fun to do on a Mac. Not quite as much fun on a PC - just because some things were so freakin inaccessible in those Dell desktops. I am a person who can't not dig inside her computer. I have to be able to make my own hardware upgrades -which is why I love working with macs. I hear they have new rules regarding what voids the warranty, but it will be a while before I need to worry about that.

And I am not a certified technician. I have had macs last at least 7 years and some times up to 10 and only had to make the smallest upgrades in software and hardware.

And when they introduced OSX which is probably what convinced many a PC user to finally switch, the gave us Mac geeks what we were totally missing a COMMAND LINE! It was orgasmic to be able to enter in linux commands at the prompt and bypass a GUI all together.

Now I am in web design, but at work I have to use a PC. It sucks, but since IE6 is still the most popular (and least standards compliant) web browser out there, web development on a PC helps you find issues that you wouldn't know were there other wise.

But, at home, Mac all the way. I have three of varying ages all of which are up to date on their security and hardware for their respective versions of OS X.

Now, if I could just afford some of their kick ass monitors.

Oh, and I totally feel you guys on the hipster bullshit that comes with some mac owners. Its why I refuse to set foot in an Apple store.

Posted by: cmoody at October 17, 2008 4:22 PM

Dude, I don't think anyone needs to tell you how shitty Dell computers are, the only reason people still buy them is because they're "custom-made"

That said, In a couple of years I'll have to trade out my WinBook (over three years old) for a new laptop and frankly I'm pretty scared to buy a Mac, it basically comes with its own prepackaged fanaticism. I'll probably just get a Toshiba, my boyfriend has one and I love it.

Posted by: Renee at October 17, 2008 4:22 PM

uh... pc for the win here. the only times i've had to use apple computers were in school and times i had graphic design jobs and that's what they had for me to use because it was the 'industry standard' which i think might be a scam. the damn thing crashed every hour or so, spinny rainbow ball of doom. mac killed my inner child.
my pc however, i love it. i like playing games and it works just fine. graphics programs work just fine and don't effing crash so much i have to hit ctrl+s every time i change something. if it breaks i can order a new part and replace the broken one myself.
i have a theory that people who get off on macs just believe they have the best because someone at the shiny mac store told them it's the best. and they paid twice as much for it so it must be good right?
maybe i'd think differently if i actually owned my own and didn't have to use the office one, but if i had enough money to buy one i think i'd spend it on something else. i'm 100% broke over here steve jobs, you can't have my money if i don't have any to spend ::shakes fist::

Posted by: yeratomato at October 17, 2008 4:33 PM

I've only used PCs, partly because I never cared enough to shell out more for a Mac, and partly because I don't use my computers for anything except listening to music and surfing the web. Considering how crappy all my PCs have been, though, maybe I should suck it up and get a Mac. Or a PC that doesn't suck.

And on that note, does anyone know how to fucking get rid of fucking Vongo? FUCK YOU VONGO GO AWAY.

Posted by: Sabrina at October 17, 2008 4:36 PM

I was a PC girl until about 2 years ago. My fiance got me into Macs, and now I have a MacBook of my own. My PC in college was a total piece of crap - it was overflowing with viruses and god knows what else, and eventually it crashed beyond repair. I love my Mac, but I'm not a big computer geek, so it's purely based on being easy to use and pretty. So pretty.

Posted by: Melissa at October 17, 2008 4:40 PM

I rarely post, but I will take a minute to say that a Mac is a Personal Computer. So the comparison is of two OS's: Mac vs. Windows. I think most people will agree that for most users a Mac is far more user friendly. If you are more old school like me, and install the BIOS and the OS yourself (preventing the need to delete any unwanted programs and registry files) the Windows based PC has a far greater horsepower/$ (or in this case computing power) ratio. Also, when there are crashes on a Mac, they are far harder to troubleshoot, and often cost a lot more to fix. I think of a Mac as a Volskagen, very reliable, but when you need to fix it get ready to shell out some dough. The Windows PC is like a Ford/GM, not as reliable, but much easier to work on (especially hardware wise).

Posted by: Reding at October 17, 2008 4:46 PM

I went Mac in law school, 2nd year, after my 2nd PC laptop in so many years drove me crazy. Despite alleged virus protection, one can only reformat a hard drive so many times (plus reinstalling software and transferring files) before saying, "Fuck this."

Mac users are stigmatized for being smug and whatnot, but, to me, it's just much easier to cope with spending extra money upfront instead of replacing the damn thing every year or two. Ya dig?

Posted by: agent bedhead at October 17, 2008 4:47 PM

Best arguement I've heard. I'm convinced.

Mac / PC
Playstation 3 / Xbox 360
Guitar Hero / Rock Band
Vaginal / Anal

I suppose its really is just about preference. Both sides will always have their fanatics but maybe it would be fun to try the other kind once in a while.

Posted by: Admin11 at October 17, 2008 4:53 PM

PC for this girlie.

Why?

Because it was cheaper. I couldn't justify the higher price point of a Mac when a PC had all the features I need for a couple hundred less (Basically my usage mimics nicole's.). Plus, the Sony VAIO came in pink. Yeah bitches, I've got a pink laptop.

I run Firefox and iTunes with no problem. I'm not a gamer or a serious techhead so I don't need a lot of horsepower in my machine. I'm happy to dork around on the internet, write a little, listen to music, and watch movies when I am Bama Incarcerated.

Mr. Pink is the son of an artist and graphic designer, so he was raised on Macs. In college he repaired Mac machines. But once he moved over into the network admin side of things, he migrated quickly to using PCs, especially to set up our home network, since that's what he was working with in his job environs.

Occasionally, we'll chat up the notion of getting a Mac, but honest to Jupiter, it comes down to price.

We are iPod owners, fo' sure. And mine is hot pink. Reeeeow.

Mac. PC gives me a headache.

Posted by: Sara at October 17, 2008 4:59 PM

I think most people will agree that for most users a Mac is far more user friendly.

It was for me until Windows 95, by FAR. Through high school and the first couple years of college, when all I was doing was word processing anyway, and WordPerfect was a bitchy bitch (I've slowly since made friends with F and Alt, to the point where I get frustrated watching someone use a toolbar because I want to do it faster for them). After 95 and Word I haven't had anything to do that would be easier on a Mac.

I haven't had a virus problem in years and don't ever find myself throwing my hands up saying "there's gotta be a better way to make spaghetti!" having spilled boiling water all over myself and the counter. I've got a sturdy, strong machine. I have a little Creative media player (again, there is nothing "on my ipod", nor will there be, you wee beady eyes fooker). I even love Vista. Thus Apple products, Jobs and the deathless smugness are just nagging presences I have no need for.

(and you all are of course right about Linux)

I've never known a Mac afficianado who wasn't positively intolerable. There's this one co-worker of mine who got a Mac logo tattooed on her head. Her goddamned head. My joy is that the artist did a shit job, so it's all warped and blotchy. Heh heh, dummy.

Posted by: Joe Six Pack at October 17, 2008 5:11 PM

Amanda H., I'm pretty tolerable. I'd even go as far to say that once you get past the initial cold shoulder, one word answers, the dislike of actual human contact, round-the-clock grumpiness that oftentimes morphs into full-blown rage, whiskey breath, five-month stubble, inability to speak without dropping the f, c, or b-bombs, petty theft of valuables, turkey clawed halfling, snoring, rudeness, flatulence, complete and utter contempt at the notion of "love" and glass eye, well I'm extremely tolerable. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME GODDAMIT?!

See?

To be fair, Amanda, I think people like that will generally be intolerable about anything. I use a Mac and I don't preach it like it's the holy messiah of computers or anything. It's just what works for me.

Unfortunately, it's also what works for a lot of intolerable assholes. I will concede that point.

Oh, Glyn... Depends on what kind of graphics your talking about. Gaming? Sure. But related to graphic design software, color accuracy and rendering capabilities, PC's ain't no better than a Mac. That's primarily what the damned things are used for - graphics...

Posted by: Skitz at October 17, 2008 6:02 PM

I haven't used a Mac in years. I don't dislike them or anything, I just haven't used one since I went to private school. The public school I switched to used PCs, and I didn't find them scary or difficult or problematic, so I changed over and have used them ever since. I also haven't owned a desktop in at least five years. For ages I used Toshibas, which are virtually indestructible. I currently have a Vaio, which I also like a lot.

I do really like Apple's gadgets. I don't think I could function without my iPod, because it has made me allergic to silence, I think. I also like the iPhone, but now I have an Android phone. I think I like it so far. It's a bit different, definitely. I just got it this week, so I haven't used it much yet.

Posted by: Sarina at October 17, 2008 6:25 PM

Mi Amore! Of course you own a Mac. No dispute on how we'll raise the children now.
I love the idea that you want to be a screenwriter, it's always held such an appeal to me. I'm taking a "Literary Dimensions of Film" class mostly because the final project is adapting a book to film. Pretty excited about it.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at October 17, 2008 6:29 PM

I have a pink Vaio, too. All the artsy-types at work are muy jealous.

I didn't buy it because it was pink, though. I bought it because it was a demo machine on clearance and I got a totally killer deal on it, and it is loaded with goodies. I think it didn't sell because the pink scared off all the geeks at the hardcore computer store.

Posted by: Wednesday at October 17, 2008 6:34 PM

Oh, mon savage! I also had to adapt a book when I was in college (damn, you make me feel old! I love it... "Sofía Robinson"... oh yeah... wait, what was I talking about? Right, time for me to close this parenthesis) and I adapted Camus' "The Stranger." I got a 7.0, which is the best grade you can get around these parts.

Does that turn you on?

Posted by: Sofía at October 17, 2008 7:16 PM

I bought an Imac G5 and 6 months later it fucked up. I've since taken it in 4 time to get the same thing repaired.

I bought a Macbook and 6 months later the HD crashed completely and everything was lost. Did it again 2 months later.

All that aside, they are worth it simply for the lack of viruses and popups that within 6 months force you to reformat your PC HD.

PC. I can't stand Macs purely because I used them in school and I hated them in school. The weird way the files are organized and the one click mouse and the way windows just fly up in front of your face when you haven't even clicked on them...jesus. I use my Ipod and it likes my PC just fine. And my PC (it's an HP) hasn't broken down once in the year and a half I've had it. The only thing I've had to do is send it in to get some kind of screen light replaced because I have it on about 24 hours a day.

I've tried using Macs, but the file system is way too weird for me and I personally only use my computer for random internet stuff and writing papers. I'm not a screenwriter or a musical artist or whatever. I have some of that stuff on my computer and i NEVER use it.

So...I think Macs are good for people who need the stuff that you can put on there, but other than that, I'd rather pay less.

And by the way, what is with people getting all frustrated with Windows Vista? I've had it for over a year now and it's fine...

Historically I've been a PC gal. But my next computer is going to be a Mac.

Now that being said I have no particular love of PCs, and I'm not defecting because I've suddenly become wild about Macs.

PCs are what my schools used growing up and now my school and the industry that I hope it will parlay into(art) are both Mac based.

So there you go, in the PC/Mac wars I'm just a piece of seaweed adrift in the currents.

I've been a PC girl most of my life, but I went mac in 2005 and never looked back. I'm an illustrator and it's definitely amazing for what I need it for, listening to some weirdass music and offering me amazing color calibrations and smooth functionality.

That's all I want. I'm not super hard over all mac products, but it definitely appeals to artists and musicians and such. ;)

PCs are cool too man. Can't we get along?

Posted by: Didi at October 17, 2008 10:12 PM

It has to be a PC. All those extras and all that possibility. The sheer volume of third party accessories that allow you to truly make that computer exactly what you want it to be.

Also, seriously, screw that bland mac look and single mouse button from the dark ages.

Posted by: PianoSoloLive at October 17, 2008 10:46 PM

PC for me.

I don't know what people are doing that their Windows systems are crashing just by looking at them but I mainly use PCs and I rarely have problems with them. Even my new Vista system with minimum-level requirements is left on 24/7 and works just fine. And as 'secure' as Macs may be...I don't have virus problems. My antivirus basically goes unused. Again, I don't know what people are doing to their systems, and I say that as someone who uses 10+tabbed browsing, gaming, and torrents on a daily basis, and more.

Frankly, and this is a point that isn't made nearly enough: both Macs and PCs work. They have their obvious differences, but they both work. Personally, I don't use Macs because I feel like with Apple there's only one way to do something, whereas with Windows I can do things just about any way I like. That's just my view. Plus I hate the way that Apple is associated with the elitist hipster geek, like I'm not cool or original 'cos I don't use it. I will give Apple one thing, they really know how to market things.

I swear, Steve Jobs could start shitting in sleek white boxes and people would wait overnight and line up around the block to pick one up, calling it the most stylish, original, and innovative move he's made yet and wear it like a necklace as a fashion statement.

Yeah, just sayin'.

Linux. On my laptop. For everything, including porn videos and DVD playback. And no, I don't rip off DVDs. Simply want to watch what I've already paid for.

I prefer macs. I had a windows machine for the games until it ate itself one time too many, meanwhile insisting on both phoning home and installing hack-enabling malware (bundled into mandatory security patches to the OS) that trojaned in an EULA granting essentially unlimited control of my computer & its content to the borg.

Read that again. To repair well known, easily exploitable holes in the OS required patches (called "service packs") that bundled additional features. The additional features required and EULA granting the right to remotely collect data on my machine's content and activities, and to remotely remove or disable both applications and media. Without telling me.

If I hadn't had the machine locked down pretty tight, I wouldn't have know it was installing that crap.

Windows isn't intrinsically half as bad as it ends up being in practice, due to its use as a Borg infection vector. Of course the open-source-y Google phone includes an application "kill switch" unilaterally available to Google. Not you.

I prefer PC, honestly. I do like Macbooks over PC notebooks, but that's because if I'm using a notebook it is for something grossly simplistic and I don't see the point in having something so loaded. For desktop systems, which is what I do all of my gaming and 95% of my business on, I prefer PC.

Posted by: Leeson at October 18, 2008 1:35 AM

I know nothing about computers. I've always had a PC. I have no issue with it. Then again, I'm a science nerd not an art nerd or a computer nerd or anything fancy like that. So what do I know?

Posted by: Megan at October 18, 2008 2:13 AM

A real geek uses a PC, because that real geek builds that PC his or her own self. Buying a computer off a store shelf is for chumps. We of the hardcore persuasion buy individual parts from all over the internets and then screwdriver them mofos together, perhaps busting out a soldering iron in the process.

Posted by: James at October 18, 2008 5:19 AM

PC.

I remember when I first got my iPod, and the thing froze. Upon forgetting the random 2 button-press-reset code and having NO way to find out (I was on a 10+ hour flight.. Joy), I was horrified to find NO way to pull out the battery to force a reset, NO way to manually force it to turn off with a functioning, single Power button and NO way to even mess with ANYTHING. Pissed me off. I can't IMAGINE a similar predicament happening with a Computer. I'd probably throw it against the wall.

I will never travel to a STORE to have someone else tell me all the crap he knows about MY computer. Maybe it's just me, I love to fix my PC... Myself. Without bringing in some obnoxious, trained-at-the-Apple-store "expert" "genius" to tell me all that precious information and access Apple REFUSES to give me about their overpriced machines in the FIRST place.
You know what, Jobs? People pay that much money, they deserve to have better access to their machine better than ANY Apple genius.

Or maybe I'm still stuck on the fact that I can't Physically OPEN my Ipod. That.. traumatizes me. I can't open it up? At all? Really? Ever?

Yes, PCs glitch and lock up. But you know what? I can FIX that. There are several ways to restart or shut down a locked PC, and the majority of the time, 5 minutes later it will be right back to working again as if nothing happened.

And frankly...
Why do people keep name-dropping their Dells? Duuuude, Dell sucks because it's a DELL. Not because it's a PC. My mom has a Toshiba, NO PROBLEMS since she's got it, save for a slight Windows loading glitch that proved for maybe 10 minutes of annoyance once or twice.

I have a Vaio, a beautiful Sony Vaio with a Vista that works excellently and it has NO PROBLEMS. It doesn't freeze, either, since every Mac user will insist that Windows "freezes, like, all the time and my Mac soo doesn't."

I hate the interface of the Mac, I hated using a Mac, I found it to be completely NOT user friendly to me.
(Nothing is more simple than the PC folders/My-Computer system. Where are my files? OH! Right where I PUT THEM. IN THE EXACT FOLDER. No confusion, folks. I never have to doubt where something is, because I name my folders and keep them clear and organized.)

And as far as looks goes... I can't believe some people buy an Apple just because it's pretty. Hey dudes! Guess what! My Vaio looks almost exactly the same, only without that annoying shiny/plastic look that makes it look like some kids toy. It's lean, simple and clean, folks. Attractive without being over the top and overly sparkly, or whatever you kids are into these days. It's nice, plain and simple.

Besides.
A top of the line, customized *that's the thing geeks love* PC will always outperform a Mac. No question.

I have used PC's for as long as I can remember and don't find them to be any more annoying than any other appliance. I am sure the Mac is a wonderful, magical, joy-making machine that produces rarified rainbow scented air and I'm not mad. Enjoy your Mac. People who have them love them. I have never had any use for one and have never felt the need to switch.

People afraid of computers use Macs.

People who can't afford Macs or most software legally use PCs.

Real geeks (ones not afraid of tweaking their shit to their hearts content) use goddamn LINUX.

I am firmly in the second column.

I guess I'm one of those rare people who doesn't really care. I use both Mac and PC. I don't feel really qualified to compare them since the Mac I use is brand new and the PCs I regularly use are all about 6 years old (I sometimes use my father's, which is new, but it's got Vista, which I don't really like). I just don't get what's the big difference or why Macs are still seen as a cult product, because they aren't anymore. The only thing different about Macs now is that they're seen as cool, and that probably has to do more with the proliferation of iProducts than with the computers themselves. Yeah, when I go to college, I want a MacBook, but that's because I'm a consumer and I want to get the free iPod that comes with it.

Posted by: Myl at October 18, 2008 11:15 AM

I'm terribly late to this discussion, but for me, it's Macs. But it's not because of any geeky reason or because I'm a super hipster, or whatever. I actually grew up using a mac. I knew it as Macintosh, and my mother, who was a graphic designer when I was growing up, taught me how to type (while being timed) on our large clunky desktop with the multi-colored apple logo. I never used a PC until I started middle school and they completely mystified me because the short cuts were different from the mac, and just the way it looked, like the Start button on the bottom...but not anymore, i guess. I can use both pretty fluidly, but I do prefer my own iBook G4, which I've had for 4 years, and it's GREAT! I love it!

Posted by: dene chen at October 18, 2008 12:03 PM

This is such a Ford/GM, Coke/Pepsi, McDonald's/Burger King discussion that it verges on the retarded. The true beauty of it is that (vritually) none of you know why you care. Welcome to the machine circa 2008.

The original Macintosh debuted on a Motorola MC68000 processor while the original IBM PC debuted using an Intel 8088 processor (I've programmed on both of them, FWIW). There were genuine functional differences between these two computing architectures (like, say, the difference between a pushrod engine and an overhead cam design). None of that matters anymore. The old (better) Motorola architecture has bitten the dust, and the physical guts of a Mac and a PC are indistinguishable nowadays. This does not mean they are the same -- far from it. What Apple sells today is a different "user experience"...take from that what you will (and apparently many of you take quite a lot -- in the marketing world you folks are referred to as "satisfied customers").

There's another, similar technological war going on in the world of wireless communications. I bet some of you are familiar with it, too. It's GSM (European and AT&T/T-Mobile cellular phones, dubbed "PC" for purposes of this discussion) versus CDMA (all other North American cellular phones, dubbed "Mac"). I bet some of you have GSM phones (generally identified by their use of a so-called "SIM card"), while many others of you are customers of Sprint and Verizon here in the good old US-of-A. Well, that war has pretty much been decided already...and guess what? The PC won again!

The sad fact/hard reality is that entrenched business interests will trump innovative technical design time and time again. The MC68000 was a truly great microprocessor, but Motorola lost out to Intel and Microsoft because the latter two knew how to suck business dick. Same thing with CDMA. CDMA is/was a great technology, but the fact that more people around the world used the other brand means the other brand gets to call the shots.

I like Pajiba because it offers me an opportunity to come back and spend time in the fantastical playground of the imagination, unfettered by the flinty reality of the world beyond the playground's edge...

usually commercials and ads don't effect me one way or another, but because of the Think Different Apple ads from the late 90's i have actually made a conscious decision never to buy an Apple/Mac product.

those fucking pretentious-as-shit self important douchey ads really pissed the fuck out of me.

i'm sure they got permission from, and/or paid, Dylan, Ali, Richard Branson, and Ted Turner for the rights to use their images, but i'd be interested in knowing what gives them the right to use use MLK Jr's and Gandhi's images? what the fuck does Amelia Earhart have to do with computers? John Lennon is probably trying to divorce Yoko Ono from the beyond the grave for allowing Apple to use their image. and in one version of the ad they show all of these historic figures - MLK, Gandhi, Lennon, Henson, Picasso - and then at the end...Jerry fucking Seinfeld?

fuck you, Apple Computers Inc.

i'm suprised they didn't include that fucking picture of Che Guevara.

the above, coupled with the fact that i'm a cheap bastard and my father is a sys admin, means i've been running Ubuntu Linux for the past two years and have no complaints whatsoever.

Posted by: causaubon at October 18, 2008 10:41 PM

'kinda fucking question is this that people are still tossing off answers to it on Saturday at 10 PM?

Back in 1988, when the choice was green screen vs. 8-bit color -- or worse, a B&W intuitive interface vs. a second-rate knock off of the same -- it was a meaningful hate-fest. Back in the day, I was the first grad student to desktop publish his thesis at my school, and that was thanks to MacWrite and an Apple Laser printer instead of Word 1.0 and a dot-matrix piece of shit.

Today, the question is almost entirely moot. Sourceforge publishes almost everything on dueling compatibility types, so if you need OpenOffice or GiMP or whatever, you can get it for free and it works on your box of preference. You can run Photoshop equally-well on Mac and PC.

You can't run an ERP system on a Mac, and you can't really enjoy your iPod on a PC. Life works that way -- there are trade-offs for everything.

Now go to a party or something rather than post comments on pajiba, you douche-dorks.

This thread warms my cold, logical, geeky heart.

A Lada, Slim? What have you got against the Italians, anyhow? Lada, Skoda, Yugo -- they're all Fiats at heart. Godtopusdammit, I hate it when your venom winds up somehow being right in spite of itself. Here's the irony: my first car was a white 1975 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe. I loved that car...until the under-engineered timing belt broke and did to the engine what numerous women have done to my heart since. So I'll see your pfffffffffffffft and raise you by pppffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffttttt.

On to BierceAmbrose we go. You engage me, you technopolitical witticist, you. Seriously, VAXen? Damn straight! I have a soft spot in my heart for the PDP-11, truth be told. The first operating system I wrote was a real-time kernel for the PDP-11; built a company around that little mother and rode the horse until the market crash of '87. Parlayed that knowledge into a VAX VMS systems programming gig on a backroom system supporting the then-exotic technology known as "cellular phones". The rest, as they say, is history. The Boston-based company I work for now is littered with ex-DEC people, so the creed lives on. Remember "Soul of a New Machine"? I always thought Tracy Kidder spent time at the wrong company -- Data General was full of useless wankers. Oh well.

Now we have PC vs. Mac. Ho hum. If Microsoft had just gone ahead and licensed Digital Research's DOS way back in the olden days then we would be looking at a vastly different computerscape today. Instead they cheaped out and we're stuck with the QDOS descendant known as Windows. Blurgh. Meanwhile the Xerox PARC boys over at Apple made hay with the Mac and have just managed to be a thorn in Microsoft's corporate paw for an entire generation now.

Then there's Linux. Bulletproof, my ass. I was on a 15-hour Delta flight from Atlanta to Seoul yesterday, and the Linux-powered entertainment system crashed three times. How do I know it was Linux, you might ask (well, you might not but I'm going to force the issue anyway)? I know this because the little seatback screen flashed the Red Hat reboot sequence every time the movie I -- and everyone else -- was watching blanked out so the OS could catch its breath.

Software is software is software, people, and the next one of us who gets it right will be the first. Just keep investing inordinate amounts of emotion so I can continue to have a job.

I don't like OS X. I'm not efficient with the Dock. Every minor or major OS update is a gamble as it often breaks compatibility with some software or another. Codecs are lame, playing downloaded videos is a chore. I don't like iTunes. And so on and so forth. So yeah, I have a MacBookPro and it runs Windows XP most of the time. Don't get me started about Vista.

I'll be honest. I have a brand new black MacBook for one reason and one reason only: Because it's SEXY. I know it does certain stuff, and it's good for people who do certain stuff...graphic whos-a-what's it or whatever. That's fine. But I know that when I bust this shit out at the library or in an airport people look at me and know: That bitch is SEXY. Her computer is sexy, therefore SHE is sexy. And deep down, any Mac user feels the same way. PCs just don't have the same type of appeal. I know it to be true, and so does every other geek on the face of the planet. Macs gave us sex appeal.

There are few things that I'm ashamed of, and this is not one of them: I am a Mac user, and I am a shallow elitist.

Macs gave us sex appeal.

I'd say Macs just make you look like a trend whore. Not saying you are one, but I am saying that's what several PCers actually think when they're looking at your computer.

Now, I'm sure other Mac users think you're sexy.

Whatever the platform, I hate laptops. I cannot type on a flat, level surface, dammit (to say nothing of the touchpad cursor)! I'll give Kristen the benefit of the doubt that she's being hyperbolic and not entirely serious, but really, seeing anyone's laptop doesn't arouse any ardor in me--it makes me think "they're gonna knock my door one day and take away my desktop, I just know it". Now, I like to help people, that's a big reason why I have the job I do, and if someone's having a problem with their laptop then I try to figure out the problem and I've managed to learn more about how they work through these trial-and-error diagnoses (ie. "your antenna's not turned on", "that's cause this shit has no RAM", etc), and what happens? Have a few successes and you're the guy to call on! I'm the Answer Man for your overheated underpowered stuff that I don't want to own or even touch! And would it KILL you to use the battery once in a while? That's what you're supposed to do when you don't have an accessible outlet.

It's rechargeable, I promise. It's part of that whole "wireless mobile computing" thing. You can't charge it up at home, along with your phone (yeah, I see your phone on the floor there. And if the battery's dying then turn it off. Got an important call you're waiting for? Wait for it elsewhere. You probably don't notice when your smoke alarm battery is dying either, do you? That persistent annoying chirp? That's the sound of your ignorance!) I don't feel like filing a Workers Comp form because I smashed my jaw on a table after falling over your tripwire.

I like EQUIPMENT, fuckers! I will not raise the white flag to low quality digital audio, text messages and Swiss Army electronics! And I've gotta wait a week to get my 3200 speed film processed, and I'm glad, because it's gonna look GOOD.

Seriously, with these little blocky hands? You'd develop a grudge too.

Oh, it's nostalgia, Che? First computer I had account / shell access to was a PDP-8. Week 1 I was hacking around the ACLs to get around the disk quota. They say you can tell the problem children from the start.

Took me years to tolerate a machine w/o a front panel. How the hell do you know what it's doing w/o the lights and switches right from the system bus? Early lab work using microcomputers as instrumentation dong mumble, data fed into the machine "The Soul of" was about. First introduction of micro-controllers into the mumble industry, beating mumble, and mumble. On to VAXen for both factory floor and hosting software engineering.

They're finally getting the Mac's kind of right. Don't think that BorgOS will ever recover from that veer away from sanity around version 4.x. They hired Cutler - architect of VMS on VAXen - then through out the better of his contributions in the interest of cobbed-up speed numbers.

For the civilians that's right, children. In every time a driver problem crashes your precious toy wasting half a day of your time, remember BorgOS was briefly architected to be way less vulnerable to such stuff (and viruses as well Then the Borg decided they need a few more digits of Win-Mark graphics specs, so pushed the drivers into where they could do more damage. (Third party, unsigned drivers executing in kernel space. Truly clever.)

The virus vulnerabilities come from casually interwingling applications with the platform about three thousand different ways. For civilians, skipping the details of how, net is to get half a scooch more lock-in or advantage for their own apps, they poked holes for infections the size of cockroaches to trundle through.

Kind of like putting the oil pan in the back seat, to get a half more MPH from a car. Good plan for NASCAR, where you're happy if half the starters finish the raced. Not such a good plan for a freaking appliance, people.

PC all the way, its all about customization

my case is airbrushed with Killer Instinct characters on it, and i couldnt be happier with my quad core sex symbol

and Jay i couldnt agree more, laptops are irritating as fuck, for me what annoys me is when you brush against the touch pad and start typing in the middle of an already typed line

desktops are where its at and so far nothing has been better for me and what i do(and thats 90% gaming)

I need my Apple MacBook.

I love my Apple MacBook.

I'm a graphic designer (hobby), do a bunch of production stuff, toy with Adobe suites, create/edit websites...it's all so easy and awesome with an Apple MacBook!

And yes...it's true.

When you see someone with an Apple computer, you HAVE to say, "Nice computer, buddy!"

It's just the Apple way of life.

All could afford was an ACER laptop that I bought at Wal-Mart for $499. And I love it.

Posted by: grumpyoldman at October 20, 2008 8:54 AM

I built my own home file server on an old PPC PowerBook, which now runs a finely-tuned Gentoo Linux. It's fast (under normal load), quiet, small, cool (in the thermal sense), and has a built-in keyboard and screen for troubleshooting and two built-in batteries in case the power goes out. If I need more horsepower, I SSH cycles to my work box, which also runs Gentoo Linux (though on a different platform).

For my everyday laptop and my non-geek husband's everyday desktop, though, it's Mac all the way. Not only does the OS Just Work, but it also gives me a BSD command-line and a full complement of command-line programs (automatic rsync backups FTW).

HA! White people be like this, black people be all like this!!

I've done my job on both systems. I'm a Mac guy. I do not begrudge anyone their preference for PCs, though. Shrill partisanship on either side wears me the fuck out.

Posted by: firedmyass at October 20, 2008 2:00 PM

PC. If it's good enough for my dad who's been using computers since the '70's, it's good enough for me. And anyway, as a history major, I don't need any of the more art/graphic-related features of a Mac like some of my friends do.

Posted by: Claire at October 20, 2008 3:18 PM

And as far as looks goes... I can't believe some people buy an Apple just because it's pretty. Hey dudes! Guess what! My Vaio looks almost exactly the same, only without that annoying shiny/plastic look that makes it look like some kids toy. It's lean, simple and clean, folks. Attractive without being over the top and overly sparkly, or whatever you kids are into these days. It's nice, plain and simple.

I guess I'm a Vaio, then.

My mother was (is) really into computers, and I remember having all sorts of crazy things around the house- a Tandy (probably an '86 or something, with actual floppy disks and DOS, i think), an Apple IIe, and some PC thing that ran Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? and had color. And dot matrix.

Then we got a Gateway2000 with Windows 95 and internet, but I still used the old Apple to write school papers because it had a good printer. Or something, I don't really know. I always switched back and forth in high school, and in my college sales jobs I used Windows' POS and Mac's MYOB, and I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've used both, and I like both.

I personally have a PC (3 year old Compaq Presario) because it was cheap, and I've had some small software problems with it, but nothing that a call to my geeky brother-in-law didn't fix easily. I've got spyware protection, and antivirous, and I'm golden. I'm sure I'd be just as happy if it were a mac.

Maybe I'm just young enough that the early issues weren't apparent to me. I don't know. I don't get the big deal. They both seem user friendly to me, but I admit I can't troubleshoot a mac.

Posted by: Alexandra at October 20, 2008 11:51 PM

I started my career on Macs and changed to PCs about halfway through. Macs drive me insane.

Maybe the way it was set up made me hate it, but the idea that you can't upgrade the drive, can't get a new graphics card installed, can't really get too many video games for it, CAN'T GET A MOUSE WITH MORE THAN ONE FRIGGIN BUTTON... Can't seem to easily find where stuff gets stored, can't expand the storage without getting an external drive...

Yeah yeah, in the early days you couldn't get the newest graphics progs on it - but those days are long gone hipster dickwads. Kinda flipped to the other side there hasn't it.

Posted by: Protoguy at October 21, 2008 3:22 AM

Uh, Protoguy? I'm confused. One can do all those things on a Mac. I can do/have done all those things on mine.

One exception: I do not care about the game issue.

Posted by: firedmyass at October 21, 2008 12:00 PM

My mouse has four buttons, and it's a Mac. I think anybody that so severly and passionately chooses a side is a tool in their own way. It's not about how much you know about computers, or how much money you have, it's really just about what you like to do and how you want to do it. It's seriously as complicated as choosing pancakes or waffles. But people make all these excuses and claims and feel so smug and superior to each other because of the computer they use. Congrats. It doesn't really matter.

Posted by: Matthew at October 21, 2008 3:39 PM

So Matthew, are PCs pancakes, or waffles? Kudos for the delicious metaphor use.

Although I wish Apple would quite bashing PCs. That "I'm a Mac" campaign is still beating a horse that hasn't even fallen over yet. Give it up already, and stick with the flashy sparkly itouch/pod/etc sing-song videos.

Posted by: Anon at October 21, 2008 3:58 PM

Yeah, as much as I like my Mac, and the iPod, iPhone, and all that crap, the whole iGimmick and idea that using a Mac makes you younger, more hip, more sociable, more whatever, is getting beyond old and really needs to die. All it's doing is fueling this pointless and tired debate. I'm a Mac because I like Arcade Fire and really dig all the CDs I can buy at a Starbucks. Eh. I'm a PC because I like to be able to make my PC reflect my obsession with Halo 3 and all things gaming. Meh. People that pick a computer, or any product, as some sort of reflection of themselves, or a way to express their personalities, are totally fucking mind-numbingly dumb.

Oh, I like to think of PCs as waffles, because while they're good, they can be made in tons of ways. But pancakes, well, you can really only get them big or small. That's the only logic I can put on that metaphor.
