Marvel Dicks Over Favreau Like It Dicks Over Everyone

Cinemablend picked up some scuttlebutt from a reliable Marvel source on the strained working relationship between Marvel and Jon Favreau, and it’s worth repeating, if only because it falls in line with what some may have presumed. Basically, Marvel, who has always been about finding the best cheap talent they can get, balked at giving Favreau a raise for Iron Man 2 and only acquiesced after Favreau essentially got the fans on his side.

Nevertheless, Marvel interfered heavily with the production on Iron Man 2 and not only rushed it into production, before the script was entirely ready, but much of the unnecessary The Avengers segues were not something Favreau was entirely pleased with. In fact, so says Cinemablend’s source, Iron Man 2 was not the film that Favreau wanted to make.

Even more disconcerting, from Favreau’s perspective, was that he wanted to direct The Avengers movie, but Marvel never even really considered him, despite the fact that Favreau — along with RDJ — basically created this Marvel revolution in Hollywood (and as I recall, they did it without much a script in the first Iron Man). But Marvel instead went with Whedon because Whedon — like Favreau four years ago — is a talented director, but he also works cheap (at least until The Avengers film makes Whedon a more expensive commodity, at which point maybe Marvel dumps him, too).

How does this affect the future of Marvel? Their source basically suggests that RDJ wasn’t particularly happy with the way that Iron Man 2 went down, either. And, for both RDJ and Favreau, it looks like Iron Man 3 will be the end of the line, at which point they’ll both jump the Marvel ship. Though, by that time, my guess is that the Marvel universe will be running on fumes, anyway. The Avengers is going to have to be one hell of a great movie to make up for the Marvel fatigue that will probably have set in by the time that we’ve run through Captain America and Thor.

If all this is true, in addition to the Mark Ruffalo for Ed Norton and Don Cheadle for Terrence Howard swapouts over the last few years, it really does look like Marvel is all about the bottom line, even at the cost of alienating its biggest draws. You really don’t want to alienate Robert Downey, Jr., because while Marvel may be bigger than any individual actor, a few sour words from RDJ could cost them at the box-office.

One interesting sidenote to all of this, however, is how Marvel’s strained relationships with its higher paid talent jibes with rumblings I’ve heard from the Hollywood Cog that Louis Leterrier is also being considered for Iron Fist, which is being produced by Marvel under the Disney banner. Leterrier — who directed Norton’s Incredible Hulk — is not a huge name, so maybe he comes cheaper. Or maybe he just toes the company line better. It’s still a rumor — and there’s not even a script yet — but it’s an interesting one to take note of in light of all this.

And like Disney showed us, you can cheap-out a franchise with bad stories and low budges indefinitely, and never suffer any ill effects or have people begin to loathe your brand and see it as synonymous with mediocre cash grabs.

If anyone wants to be the Pixar of comics and save Marvel's ass, now's the time to start building your rep.

Why is mass media just the story of the golden goose over and over and over and over.

budgets, not budges. righteous geek spittle was obscuring my keyboard.

This is indicative of how they've been handling these potentially good movies lately: Cock up the process all along the way, step on innumerable toes, short-change the very ample stock of storyline for the sake of some fast food bullshit (I'm looking at you X-Men and the heresy that is FF), then bitch about why the $150 million waste of money didn't do jack at the screens, all the while poisoning the well of the very people who endorse the idea of comic adaptations. Then they want to talk about "reboot" fucking 2 years after the last sphincter-squeeze dropped a little too much into the toilet.

To translate: We are money-hungry fuckheads that want to use these stories as monetary sure things by which to bring in new directing "talent" that they're either connected to or have been grooming or just have to fill a 5-film contract signed w/the studio. All we need is your gullibility and acquiescence. Sign on the dotted line and give us your money.

Yeah, corporate mind is screwed on correctly. It's plain as day that they are the model of emulation.

Recondite,

I don't mind them making money - I desperately want to give them my money. I love being entertained by good movies. Except lowballing your scriptwriters and directors and good actors to save a couple of bucks does not end in good movies that make money!

then bitch about why the $150 million waste of money didn't do jack at the screens,

Exactly this. I just want to shake the CEO's of these companies - "Why? Why don't you like money!?"

Iron Fist is a cool-looking character, but they won't put that costume on screen, & we don't need another movie where a Westerner is the Chosen One or whatever for some decidedly Eastern power or mantle. Unless, of course, the movie is about how the Chinese get pissed off that their legacy was bestowed upon a honky, & try to kill said honky.

For the love of god people Whedon is a TeeVee HACK!
There, I said it.

When is he going to announce he's casting his go-to bimbo, Eliza Dushku in this?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 6, 2010 12:08 PM

It doesn't make much sense to say "Marvel rushed Iron Man 2 before the script was finished". One of the things about the first Iron Man movie was that it was largely improvised. I am not saying that Marvel should interfere in Favreau's work but it's not like the script seems to be a big part of his success anyway.

Neither T Howard or Ed Norton are big losses. Ed Norton's movie was largely a bust and Mark Ruffalo is a very good actor. I did not miss T Howard in IM-2. Don Cheadle did a very good job. Marvel did not screw up with those swaps.

On the one hand Louis Leterrier directed The Incredible Hulk. And on the other hand he directed Clash of the Titans.

Perhaps that is why one of my hands wants to murder him, and the other hand wants to ... I don't know, just slap him? Twist his titty? Something like that.

I think he may have directed The Transporter with his dick.

I remember when Iron Man proved to be a monster hit that Marvel was almost immediate in their release of Iron Man 2's release date and said they were raring to go -- followed up by Favreau saying that he hadn't been contracted to direct nor was there a script.

That, followed up by the rest of the cocking up Marvel have done, doesn't fill me with confidence that there will be much beyond The Avengers. In fact, I'm guessing that after that aforementioned movie, we'll get Iron Man 3 and then the Marvel saga will end right back where it began.

marvel REALLY needs to be licking favreau's ass. like, with as much tongue as they can.

When is he going to announce he's casting his go-to bimbo, Eliza Dushku in this?

Yeah, even for your usual attempts at pseudo-trolling, that is kinda stupid.

A somewhat recurring role and a show he did as a favor don't really scream "go-to bimbo" to me. There are at least five other women Whedon likes to reuse more than Dushku.

Hell, Alan Tudyk is more of a go-to bimbo than she is.

I think all the "questionable feelings" you were expressing earlier have clouded your snark-making judgement.

Vermillion,
Back in February, Dushku was quoted as saying she and Whedon were planning on making a film together. I seriously doubt she'd get a part in The Avengers, but BarbadoSlim kind of has a point.

I stand by my statement.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 7, 2010 12:12 PM

i just wish they weren't in such a hurry to keep bringing new franchises on. they had a good thing going with spiderman, and xmen, then iron man. they could make more of those (hell comic books have a new story every 30 days) but to suddenly start 4 more franchises (thor, cap A, avengers, and ironfist) you're taxing out regular audiences, and all you retain are comics geeks, who wont fill enough seats to justify CGI orgy budgets. and you get cheap embarassments like ghost rider, jonah hex and elektra.

and what kind of idiot thinks of writers and directors as optional parts of the budget?

Posted by: idleprimate at August 7, 2010 5:27 PM

Hey Recondite, mayhap it would be better for your bile if you got your facts straight before launching it all over these here internets.

X-Men and Fantastic Four are both movies that Marvel Studios, the fine folks behind Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, and the upcoming Cap, Thor, and Avengers movies, HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH.

Sony and Fox, respectively, were the studios to cock up those franchises. While the current moves that Feige and company are making and have made, and the rumors that are rumbling around don't sound none to good, don't lump in shit that ain't their fault. Marvel merely licensed those characters to Sony and Fox, and then Sony and Fox did anything they damn well wanted to do, and there wasn't/isn't anything Marvel Studios could/can do creatively.

This is why there won't be any Spider Man or FF or X-Men cameos in the Avengers movie, or in Thor, or in Cap, or in Iron Fist for that matter. Why? Because Sony and Fox OWN THE GODDAMNED MOVIE RIGHTS TO THOSE CHARACTERS.

So get your shit straight smarty pants.
