Bringing it All Back Home

LOSTs-Jacob.jpg

“Lost” is returning for its sixth and final season in just a few weeks, and to get your head around everything that’s about to happen, ABC’s put out another video that serves as a crash course in what’s happened so far. They first released an all-encompassing “everything you need to know” recap just before the fourth season, and though the new video necessarily borrows a lot of ready-made clips and narration from the earlier edition, so much has happened in the past couple seasons that it feels like a brand-new thing.

Anyway, the season premiere airs Feb. 2, and recaps by yours truly will be right behind it. For now, though, spend eight minutes and 15 seconds reminding yourself who’s alive, who’s dead, and who’s in between:

CAN NOT WAIT!

Poor Locke. What a shit life he had.

Posted by: Scully at January 6, 2010 11:04 AM

I hope this is thorough enough such that I won't have to go back and read a bunch of episode guides. Fuck if I remember what happened last year.

Posted by: Pandemic at January 6, 2010 11:09 AM

man this is basically just telling me that the majority of what happens in Season 4 isn't really important. What about the Widmore/Ben thing? I was rewatching it last night and there are some really interesting parallels between the Widmore/Ben and Jacob/Nemesis dichotomies.

I need friends to talk about this with...

Posted by: buttercup at January 6, 2010 11:18 AM

Goshamighty but I am bummed out by Locke's arc so far. If they don't straighten that shit out and make him awesome again this season, I'm gonna be hella pissed. (The rumor mill is saying hopeful things about that.)

Posted by: Jerce at January 6, 2010 11:18 AM

I forgot to say that I love your recaps, Mr. Carlson, sir, and look forward to those almost as much as I look forward to the show itself.

Posted by: Jerce at January 6, 2010 11:19 AM

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! SO EXCITED!

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at January 6, 2010 11:22 AM

Jacob/ Esau mirror lots of couplings on the show: Widmore/Ben, Jack/ Locke at the beggining, Jack/ Sawyer at the beggining...it's the fundamental premise of the show; as Locke said in season one "light versus dark".

I cannot wait!

Posted by: Scully at January 6, 2010 11:29 AM

I have prepared for the 6th and final season by re-watching the first 5 (well, I started 5 last night).

I. Cannot. Wait. (For the recaps as well as the show.)

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at January 6, 2010 11:31 AM

Ahem *beginning*, apparently, I'm too excited to spell correctly. Twice.

pinky mcladybits, i see your eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! and raise you a squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

"Mr. Friendly throws like a girl" was probably my favorite part.

Apparently I've managed to forget virtually everything so far despite being a dedicated fan. I still remember nearly every line of dialog from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which I watched in my teens, but now my aging brain can't hold onto a single season of Lost.

Locke has indeed been screwed in life. I'm bummed that he's really dead; if anyone deserves a resurrection, it's him. Although if the bomb reset everything, then I guess a lot of people will be resurrected. But I'm assuming and hoping the show's creators won't pull a lazy stunt like that.

They can leave Juliet dead, though. I hate that bitch. I miss Charlie. I'm dying to know what happened to Claire, and to see if Sun and Jin are reunited. And BEN! More Ben, please! Love that little weasel.

Posted by: DeadBessie at January 6, 2010 11:50 AM

*shrug*
meh.

BLASPHEMER!!!
How can ANYONE like Kate more than Juliet? Look up whiny bitch in the dictionary (because I scribbled it in mine), and you will see a pic of squishy-face Kate.

On a related note, SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE for new recaps!!!

EXACTLY, DeadBessie. This is why I just decided to watch the whole thing over.

Also, I forgot to add my SQUEEEEEEEEEEE! to the pile.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at January 6, 2010 11:56 AM

Oh, except for the Star Trek TNG part. I'd replace that with Buffy.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at January 6, 2010 11:57 AM

(stands in the corner with a drink in her hand, waiting patiently for Pajiba Love to make it's appearance)

Yup, never seen one single second of the show Lost. I'll be at the bar until we talk about something else.

Claire is dead. Dead dead dead. I hope she stays that way. I can't take her saying "Okay?" again. Please god anything but that!

Posted by: Scully at January 6, 2010 12:08 PM

I watched the first few episodes of Lost (maybe four or five) and then lost my desire to watch it.

I want to get back into it but I can't make myself watch it for some reason. Is this show like Dexter, where the fun is going over what's happened in your head and trying to figure out where it's going? It seems like when people talk about it they say that the plot keeps thickening without any real logical resolution. Someone sell me on Lost because I'd love to know what I'm missing, I just need a good push.

Posted by: becks at January 6, 2010 12:20 PM

I never, ever squee - but I am doing my own version of a squee. It's more of a happy dance.

I do admit to living in fear, dread and a few other emotions that everything we know will have been wiped out in a game-changing explosion. I'm not sure I can handle that and I'm afraid it will disappoint. But my wee hopeful mind corner is dreaming of satisfaction.

Does everyone know about the two posters?

Y'all (yes, I'm from TX) should check out the Lost Re-Watch column: http://losttherewatch.blogspot.com/

Fantastic stuff. Lots of great insight and speculation from a guy who (like me) has devoted waaaaay too much time to this show...in a good way though.

It's an episode by episode examination of the show looking at underlying themes, philosophy, allusion and allegory. He's mid-way through season 4 now, but all of the prior blogs are online.

Even as a huge Lost dork I've found it very informative and illuminating.

Posted by: ChickenStu at January 6, 2010 12:47 PM

Does anyone else think that might be a Trojan Horse behind them?

Posted by: Cindy at January 6, 2010 12:47 PM

I just recently sat down and watched all 5 seasons of Lost (got to love winter break from college). The show has some good moments, even some good shocking moments. But as far as sci-fi goes, I've seen better. It'll be interesting to see how they tie everything together, get the castaways from 1977 back to 2007, explain what the hell the smoke monster really is, and bring everything to an effective end.

I agree that Claire is probably dead--sure doesn't mean we won't be seeing her again.

How can ANYONE like Kate more than Juliet?

WHOA. Whoa whoa whoa there, Patty O'Green. I NEVER claimed to like Kate either. I hate them both pretty much equally--Kate because she's selfish and treats men like shit, and Juliet ever since she went from "we have to stop Jack from detonating the bomb, we can't let all those people die" to "My BF totally gave his former GF a funny look this one time and now I'm totally gonna blow the fuck out of this place so I don't hafta feel the pain of losing him, screw those other people!"

AVB, yep, I remember Buffy just fine too. I'm a big nerd.

becks, I think trying to figure things out IS a big part of the fun, but there's also a lot of fabulous story telling going on. It may take more than a few episodes to get into it. Seasons 2 and 3 are kinda sucky. 4 and 5 are awesome. I finally convinced some friends to start watching and they've enjoyed it so much they've blown through all the seasons in a couple of months.

And I know it's hard not to get nervous that they'll screw everything up, but from what I've read, the creators do have a plan and even insisted on stopping the show at season 6 despite its high ratings, because that's when they planned for the story to end and they weren't going to compromise on it.

Posted by: DeadBessie at January 6, 2010 1:28 PM

dammitjanet--love that link. Loved the smoke monster depiction (black squiggles!), loved that someone actually took the time to find completely accurate cat representations of Sawyer and Hurley.

Posted by: DeadBessie at January 6, 2010 1:34 PM

Oh, except for the Star Trek TNG part. I'd replace that with Buffy.

same here. Although to be fair to us, Lost has a shit ton of important things to remember.

i never watched 'lost' when it was broadcasted.
then a few months ago i watched the whole thing, from the pilot to the finale of season 5. i gotta tell you, that's just the only way to watch it...no reruns, no long gaps between episodes. everything makes "sense," the excitement is sustained.
and then a few weeks after having watched it, my brother was staying with us for a few weeks, and i ended up watching it all over again with him.
we don't watch tv in our household--lots of video though--and this will be the first time in years i'll be watching a tv show at a certain time every week...and shit-golly if i'm not so excited about this, it feels like christmas all over again--no better!!

Posted by: maxpurr9 at January 6, 2010 2:53 PM

Hahahaha, DeadBessie, your Juliet impression was spot on and hilarious. But hey, hell hath no fury and all that jazz. As long as you don't prefer Kate, we are all good.

I don't mind when people want Jack and Kate together, because I'm not really feelin' Jack anymore, either.

Posted by: Patty O'Green at January 6, 2010 3:59 PM

Sorry guys I'll be right back, I need to change my pants.

Posted by: Brett at January 6, 2010 6:41 PM

If Sun and Jin aren't reunited, I'm gonna be majorly pissed.

Not that that means anything, really.

But let me pile on the SQUEEEEEEEEE!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at January 6, 2010 7:24 PM

Is that the guy who played the devil's starter suit on Supernatural?

Posted by: SaBrina at January 6, 2010 8:38 PM

My dick hates this video because it won't play and I can't share the joy and excitement that is not knowing what the fuck......aaaarrrrrgh.

Posted by: Kelly Booth at January 6, 2010 9:57 PM

there is no way you can sum up more than a season of LOST without making people's brains crack.

anyhu, for true LOSTIES i suggest whitney's popcandy when the new season begins-there's a massive LOST community there,EW's Doc Jansen ain't too bad either.

Posted by: unevan at January 7, 2010 12:51 AM

I'm not really feelin' Jack anymore, either

Jack not only seems boring now, but irrelevant. I don't really care either if he and Kate reunite, even if they kinda deserve each other. The thing I hate about Juliet is that hell, Sawyer didn't scorn her, he just glanced at Kate once during a possibly significant moment, and from that Juliet infers that their loving, stable relationship is utterly doomed and she might as well die along with everyone else.

Kelly Booth, there's really no new info in that vid, it's just a recap of previous seasons, if that makes you feel better. Maybe try YouTube? The blooper reels are there too; they're hilarious.

Posted by: DeadBessie at January 7, 2010 8:50 AM

I went through seasons 4 and 5 again recently in preparation for sure-to-be-awesome (Please?) season 6, and came up with a drinking game. If, while watching season 4, you do a shot every time someone utters the phrase "off this island"...

...you will die of acute alcohol poisoning.
