The Return of "Lost" Announced

And What Does It Have to Do with Bill Murray? / Dustin Rowles

Variety is reporting that ABC has started to put its mid-season schedule together, and announced today that “Lost” would be returning on February 2nd with a two-hour episode called “LA X.” The minor news here, however, is that ABC will be moving the show to Tuesdays at 9. And while it doesn’t exactly feel natural — despite being bounced around the schedule over the course of the series, it feels like a Wednesday night show to me — it will finally mean that Tuesdays will have something worth staying away from the bars for.

Apparently, the showrunners weren’t enthused about a 10:00 slot, which ruled out its usual Wednesday spot, where the fairly successful comedy block (“Cougar Town” and “Modern Family”) reside. The unfortunate news, however, is that “V” will likely follow “Lost,” which means that it’s not going to be canceled. I think “FlashForward” is a better fit — I don’t like the latter show very much either, but I’d probably stick around after “Lost” to watch it, if I were the kind of person who watched shows live and lost my remote and was completely paralyzed.

Anyway, in related news, SciFi Wire has uncovered something of a spoiler about the upcoming season (close your eyes while you read this next paragraph if you don’t want to know) in the form of a tweet by Carlton Cuse, who announced, “We are very happy to welcome Rebecca Mader back to LOST. Just saw some dailies of her new work. Awesome.” Mader, of course, was Charlotte, the love of Daniel Faraday’s life, whose head imploded during all that time-travel. The spoiler suggests, perhaps, that the nuclear blast reset “Lost’s” timeline. Maybe the final season will be 18 Groundhog Day episodes, where the crew is lead back to the nuclear blast over and over until someone convinces Andie MacDowell to fall in love with him.

(Okay, you can open your eyes now)

And if you’re curious, Variety also announced the cast regulars for this season, if you want to read something into it: Naveen Andrews, Nestor Carbonell, Emile de Ravin, Michael Emerson, Jeff Fahey, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway, Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim, Ken Leung, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O’Quinn, and Zuleikha Robinson. We also know that Elizabeth Mitchell and Dominic Monaghan will be returning in some capacity.

...But no Henry Ian Cusick. Hmm.

Very exciting! February seems so fucking far away though... and it def. feels like a Wednesday show. It was always a nice way to break up the week.

Ian Somerhalder & Maggie Grace are also coming back for a few. (I didn't read the spoiler, so maybe it was mentioned. I avoid Lost spoilers like the plague). That is unsettling to see no Desmond... curious what that's about.

I'm still pissed that they killed off Juliette instead of Kate. You bastards!!!

Posted by: the_wakeful at November 19, 2009 6:17 PM

february is still too damn far away. BUT YAY!

Posted by: figgy at November 19, 2009 6:25 PM

the_wakeful, i'm with you on that one. juliet was the only female character that never made me want to stab myself repeatedly in the face.

is it sad that the day after all lost season finales i start a countdown to the next season? seriously one of the best shows ever. i will cry when it's done...or maybe i'll just figure out a way to get it unstuck in time by turing a wheel so that i may watch it forever...

...But no Henry Ian Cusick. Hmm.

Posted by: Another Kate at November 19, 2009 6:03 PM

Probably due to the sexual harassment he was sued for. It appears Lost doesn't look too kindly on bad publicity (Ana Lucia and Libby).

Posted by: Scully at November 19, 2009 6:58 PM

It looks like Henry Ian Cusick will be a recurring character, but not a regular cast member.

Posted by: katy at November 19, 2009 7:33 PM

Glad to see "Locke" is still in there.

Posted by: katy at November 19, 2009 7:34 PM

I can't wait. Lost might very well be the best show ever. (Cram it, Wire fundamentalists.)

Posted by: George at November 19, 2009 7:37 PM

No! Ben forever! He's a tiny, bug-eyed, murderin' little mother fucker but HE IS EVERYTHING I WISH I COULD BE!

Except the murderin'? Yeah, except the murderin'.

Just finished a rewatch of the first 4 seasons followed by watching season 5 for the first time. Damn, that's some good TV.

Also: Cusick was sued for sexual harassment? Damn. I never heard about that.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at November 19, 2009 9:04 PM

Whee! I cannot wait. Although, I'm also a little sad it's the last season.

I disagree about what should follow Lost. Flash Forward is leaving me cold. Even though V is so far a cheesy mess, I find it more entertaining. I keep finding myself halfway through an episode of FF uninterested or asking the mister what happened because I stopped paying attention.

LOST!!!! Can't wait. . . what ever will we do when it is done forever?

Posted by: Alli at November 19, 2009 10:51 PM

Oh fuck this I was so happy when Charlotte died. She was unbelievably annoying. Ugh Lost why can't you bring back Boone and Shannon instead. Remember them? Incest? INTRIGUING TELEVISION.

Posted by: buttercup at November 20, 2009 12:32 AM

I gave up on Lost about the same time I gave up on Heroes. Too many unanswered questions and ridiculous craphouse shitfucker penisexploding storylines.

I'm waiting for someone to sum up the whole series in about 4 minutes, now that I'd watch.

And here I thought Henry had put a restraining order against ME...

Posted by: Miss A at November 20, 2009 5:19 AM

I will second the notion that "V" is better than "FlashForward." I am watching both, and I think "V" is the better show. Not to say that it's particularly good, but "FlashForward" is increasingly heinous. The dialog is so, so bad. The actors are... well, maybe it's the dialog. The in-character motivations are non-sensical. I'll take Reptilian Space Invaders any day.

...juliet was the only female character that never made me want to stab myself repeatedly in the face...

God, I HATED her. I hate Kate too, don't get me wrong, but the actress who plays Juliet only gives her two expressions--blank, and smug smile. I fucking HATE that smug smile. And then in the season finale, they're on the sub and she insists that they have to stop Jack from blowing up the island because "we can't let all those people die!", then she promptly tosses her convictions out the window when she sees Sawyer give Kate a funny look and decides that yeah, blowing up the island IS a good thing, because then she won't experience the pain of losing Sawyer to Kate, EVEN THOUGH SHE HASN'T FUCKING LOST HIM. She's as bad as that Twilight bitch; life isn't worth living without her man, and all those people she was so concerned about suddenly mean nothing to her as long as she can be spared some pain. Who the hell chooses detonating a nuclear weapon over a little heartache?

Hated Charlotte too. And Shannon. Damn, are any of the female characters likable? I guess Claire and Sun are OK. Libby seemed nice enough but of course they killed her. Oh, hey, Rose! Forgot about her--she's awesome. "Who said you could eat our peanuts?"

And I adore Ben. He's everything coryo said he is, and yet you love him just the same. I'm also glad to hear Monaghan is back, 'cause I love Charlie, although it's still not enough to make me watch the crapfest that is Flash Forward. So far V is kinda lame but not really offensive, while Flash Forward insults my intelligence on a regular basis.

TUESDAYS! HOORAY!

I just registered for Spring classes... Monday and Wednesdays. I was all bummed about it, because I was going to have to miss Lost live. I cannot tell you how good this news sounds to me.

Also, I started out hating Juliet, but she grew on me. Especially as I found that I was beginning to really loathe Kate. Also, I'm going to back up coryo's EEEEE! BEN! sentiment. I'm really excited for this season.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at November 20, 2009 9:10 AM

My husband and I are both very excited about this (and that's rare with TV), I just hope that they give us all the satisfaction we're craving. And that can of course take the form of a continuously shirtless Daniel Dae Kim. I was actually a bit sad when Juliet bit it, I was starting to like her with Sawyer. I would much rather it been Kate who was blown up, she annoys the shit out of me. Seriously.

And I'm going to continue the Ben love. He's one of my favorite characters of all time, and Michael Emerson is the tits. I also think it's hilarious/adorable that he's married to Arlene from True Blood, I just think that's the oddest match for some reason. Maybe because I can only think of them as Ben and Arlene.

Posted by: Katers at November 20, 2009 9:52 AM

I was hoping Bill Murray would be on this season, but then we wouldn't have the Groundhog Day storyline cause it would be too much... and if I have to choose between those two awesomists, Groundhog Day and Bill Murray, I stay with Groundhog Day, so I'll be just as happy. But there could be a spot for Taye Diggs with grenades in both hands, that is really what Lost is missing right now. And maybe Adam Baldwin.

Posted by: zito at November 20, 2009 10:28 AM

I second Adam Baldwin. In fact, I'd take the entire cast of Firefly landing with reanimated Wash and taking everyone off for a magical adventure in Western Space.

And I fucking love Lost.

Posted by: Zuffle at November 20, 2009 9:19 PM

I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED %&#)$*#&%)*$)!

Posted by: julian at November 22, 2009 12:38 AM

Crazy theorizin':

Jack's crazy a'splodin' plan created an alternate timeline and there are now two universes on the show. So the question is not whether the bomb did or didn't alter the timeline; both things happened.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at November 22, 2009 8:57 PM

Whoever made the decision to demote the actor who plays Desmond is stupid.
