I’ll Be Back....Maybe

Skynet Optioned By Lionsgate / Brian Prisco

Trade News | January 14, 2010 | Comments (17)

I’m kind of loathe to feed into the hype machines as all of the film blogs scramble to report on the industry shake and shimmy, tracking the shifting nature of directors, franchises and actors. Who’s in? Who’s out? It’s a little like counting snowflakes in my opinion, but you people paid your dime, so here’s the buzz.

McG didn’t do such a great job with the Terminator franchise, and so now it’s looking for a new home to option the rights. The Terminator bloodline is a rich one, in that they can technically plot the story wherever they want. It can take place in the future, it can take place in the past, it can take place in an alternate future. Like the Star Wars mythology, they can pretty much pick and choose, so it’s still fertile ground. Personally, I’m hoping for a crossover with Pirates of the Caribbean. C’mon! Robot PIRATES?!

Anyway, Lionsgate is supposedly the lead dog on the pack slavering for the rights. Despite the fact that they’ve been earning their bloodmoney from Tyler Perry films and shitty horror films, I love me some Lionsgate. They do good work. I’m worried they’re gonna go the way of the Miramax, but for now, they’re doing well for themselves, and I’m behind that. Yeah, they’re behind Daybreakers and Why Did I Get Married Too Much Tyler Perry? but they’re also the ones producing Kick-Ass.

Either way, I’m still curious to see if McG stays on and if Bale and Worthington comes back. I mean, shit, The Governator and Robert Patrick might come back at this rate. It remains to be seen if they’ll stick to McG’s original visio— SNERK. I can’t even get that out with a straight face. Oh, you music video hack.

Really, since Skynet's only function is to protect its own continued existence, it could have just built a rocketship and left to start its own robot planet somewhere else.

It's a geometrically growing brain. You think it would have the ability to think laterally.

... or robot pirates. Whatever.

If McG is still attached, I'm boycotting this bitch. Terminator: ScratchyBale was just awful.

I thought Salvation's suck was mostly Christian Bale's fault?

Chugga, I blame everyone involved (except Common).

Whoever cut the trailers did a good job, though.

I unabashedly loved T4. And what. Bitches.

It takes a special talent to make gigantic exploding death-robots boring.

I actually just got around to watching T:S this past weekend.

I'd heard all the horror stories about Bale screwing the production over to get himself a bigger role; and of course I knew it was McG going in; but...damn.

The only amusement to be found was in watching Bryce Dallas Howard. I got the impression she had realized, too late, what a flaming turd she was attached to and decided to just have fun. Her performance reminded me a lot of Carol Burnett's Norma Desmond character.

And I watched Sam Worthington with great interest, having heard his name for months as the Next Big Hollywood Thing, but never having seen him perform. Sadly, even after watching this movie I still can't tell you if the man can act or not.

I was so hoping Whedon's generous offer for the franchise would be accepted.

Jerce, I agree with your comments on Sam Worthington. In both Terminator (which I actually enjoyed, aside from the gaping, vile plot holes) and Avatar (beautiful, scyfy Pocahontas), he plays the same role. Cheap, good looking, confused guy. That should be the title of his next movie. He will wander around for 90 minutes and things will just randomly explode in his wake.

Whatever. I'm going to reserve judgment until I've seen him in something with a wee bit of substance.

The Terminator bloodline is a rich one, in that they can technically plot the story wherever they want.

I would respectfully counter that Terminator, is plotwise, a dead end.

1. The origins and end of everything has already been established: Reese is the dad, Sarah is the every-woman chosen by destiny to give birth to the future leader of the resistance. She got sperminated by Reese. Reese gets smoked and she trains the kid for Judgment Day at which time she's already dead, for whatever reason. That's The Terminator story.

2. Then you have the prequel..ish series where you see how John became whatever. Again, it ends on Judgment Day (or Sarah's death). Already we know John becomes a warlord/guerrilla leader.

There's nowhere to go, it's circular, as far as "The Terminator" goes, it's done. You wann re-visit that universe, see how humanity might win against Skynet, you could, but that's not a Terminator story.

He will wander around for 90 minutes and things will just randomly explode in his wake.

That actually sounds like something I might watch one dull weekend afternoon. But, you know, we already have Jason Statham for that kind of thing.

superasente , check out some of his work in Australian films - Gettin' Square, Somersault or even his side role in Rogue. The guy can act.

Weird, Jerce, I too just watched it this weekend for the first time. It was pretty disappointing, but I did like Sam Worthington.
