Like Lemmings to the Sea, So Shall Betty White Lead the Elderly to Punk Punks

If you adore Betty White (and by gum, you’d better), just imagine how her fellow aged friends feel. She’s the poster Granny; the one who gives us all hope that our later years won’t leave us sobbing in a disgusting bowl of cold mush and ill humor. And like the Pied Piper of Century Village, she is about to lead her brethren and sistren down the prankster path. At the ripe age of 89, Ms. White has signed on to host the senior version of “Punk’d,” a hidden camera show to be called “Off Their Rockers.” Now I realize Pajiba readers aren’t exactly the target demographic here, but come on, it’s Betty! And believe it or not, even hipsters age.

Based on Belgium’s “Benidorm Bastards,” NBC’s version will have Betty playing the role of host and commentator of the hidden camera show. Here’s a clip of the original show:

Honestly, I’m hoping and expecting the U.S. version to be better than that; with Betty on board, it has to be, right? She kicked ass on SNL and though I could only make it through a couple of episodes of “Hot in Cleveland” (bad show, really bad), White is clearly the best and the funniest of the ladies. Of her new gig, the last of the Golden Girls says, “People have been telling me that I’m ‘Off My Rocker’ for years,” the 89-year-old said in a statement. “Now I can prove it.”

So it's a cross between "Trigger Happy TV" and the old folks' home? I'm in.

Is it just me, or are there some serious DoS attacks going on with google and youtube right now?

I saw most episodes of Benidorm Bastards, and it did have some pretty good moments -- better than the YouTube clip above would seem to imply. In a way, though, the show was very 'Belgian', so I wonder how it'll be translated to an entirely different cultural context... Also, it got kind of old fast (pun not intended) -- it had only two seasons in Belgium, and I think that was more than enough.

Yeah, whatever. I'm a little drunk.

I love Betty White, but please! This type of show has run it's course.

Candid Camera was funny when it was first on, anything that follows is a pale imitation.

And I just have a problem with the whole Punk'd name. But then again, it could just be me.

Overkill. I love her, but in the name of St. Olaf we're currently plumming the depths of Overkill Crevasse.
