Show of hands, who thinks LeVar Burton may be an evil robot from the future, working out some plan to dominate the human race? Because if that’s not the case, if he really IS everything he seems to be, then he’s just way too cool and nice for me to wrap my brain around.

Reading Rainbow was on the air from 1983 to 2006 (and in syndication until 2009), meaning that for anyone born after 1970 or so, Burton was probably a big part of your childhood. Now Reading Rainbow lives on in the iPad app, which really is fantastic, but it severely limits who has access to it. Burton has started a Kickstarter campaign to bring his show back to the internet, with digital libraries and virtual fieldtrips. (Remember when Reading Rainbow took the fieldtrip to the set of TNG? My little mind was blown.) And he wants to make it accessible to all children, not just those whose parents own an iPad. He also wants to make a classroom component that is completely free to schools in need.

Not for nothing, the donation rewards are crazy. I want to suggest we all pitch in and get Burton to host a Pajiba storytime session, but really I just want my hands on that visor.

Check out the Kickstarter page, and you can watch the campaign video here:

Honestly, I would watch a whole six minute video of that opening “people losing their sh*t over LeVar Burton” gag.

Update: Hours after the Kickstarter launch, Burton has already met his $1 million goal.

Vivian Kane thinks Reading Rainbow is the second best thing you can give money to on the internet.
