Let's All Speculate Wildly About Which Comic Book Big Bad Joaquin Phoenix Would Play In 'Batman Vs. Superman'

Not that I pretend to understand the motivation behind most of Zack Snyder’s choices, but this one strikes me as particularly off. Most trade news outlets are reporting that Joaquin Phoenix is in the running to play Lex Luthor. Don’t get me wrong, Phoenix is an enormously talented actor and a freaking chameleon but Lex Luthor? I don’t see it. Phoenix has a great loopy, edgy charm that translates well to psychopaths and the disturbed. Lex Luthor has always struck me as the kind of mad man who has his sh*t together. To be fair, this casting rumor is still in its fledging stages, so the information might be slightly off. Which DC Big Bad would Phoenix be right for? If Jason Momoa is, as most comic nerds have surmised, playing Vandal Savage, then how would Lex Luthor fit into a plot involving both Batman and Superman? And in a post Breaking Bad world, how are we supposed to accept anyone other than Cranston in the role?

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Isn't Cranston too old for Luthor? I'd like to see a younger guy take on the roll and channel some of the younger, brash, cartoon version of Lex.

  • BobbFrapples

    Parasite possibly. Maybe Clayface.

  • My first thought is completely out of left field, but why not Darkseid? It would work well with bringing the other heroes into the flick, and Phoenix has the gravitas to pull off such a big bad CGI'd monster.

He's got a date... with destiny.

    Joaquin Phoenix IS... Calendar Man!

Hrm, ok, maybe not. Wait, I think I have it...

    He'll leave you in stitches!

    Joaquin Phoenix IS... Crazy Quilt!

    Yeah, that's the ticket.

  • BIGGER on the INSIDE

We should not accept anyone but Cranston as Lex Luthor.

For the love of freaking all that is holy why???

Seriously how many superheroes are showing up now?

We have Batman, Wonder Woman, Savage, Lex Luthor, and freaking Superman with Lois Lane. Do we all remember Spider-man 3? Anytime you throw too many villains with back stories the movie suffers. The main reason why Avengers was such a success was they strategically rolled out the other heroes main stories so Avengers was able to focus on just one villain Loki.

Sigh this is going to be such a shitshow movie.

  • foolsage

I've yet to see any confirmation about which role Momoa is playing.

Around a few blogs that has been what they have been saying. Dont know if it's true or not but I still stand by my main point there are too many characters for a movie called Superman Vs. Batman. Ideally they should have had one more Superman movie featuring the rebuilding of Metropolis, his continuing relationship with Lois Lane and also people rightfully being afraid of Superman. All of Earth saw what he could do and there could be some out there trying to figure out a way to check Superman, enter Lux freaking Luthor. Lex would be the head of any We need to get rid of Superman group and that should have been movie 2. No muss, no fuss. Frankly Bryan Cranston or even Gary Oldman would have rocked a Lex Luthor portrayal...Joaquin yeah no.

Instead we have them not doing any world building for what they are trying to turn this movie into Justice League without calling it Justice League.

  • foolsage

Take all those guesses with a huge grain of salt. Those people almost certainly don't know any more about this movie than we do; they just present their theories as if they're fact.

Anyhow, I'll reserve judgement about how many villains the movie has until I actually see the movie.

I'd love to see Cranston or Oldman as Luthor though, agreed.

  • kirivinokur

    Mister Mxyzptlk! Now that's Oscarbait!

  • Bert_McGurt

I could almost see him playing Bizarro, weird as that movie might be. But that might be too "henchman-y" for an actor of his stature.

  • Ryan Ambrose

In my mind I always pictured Jon Hamm as Lex Luthor for Snyder's MoS sequel.

Luthor has always been portrayed as a rotund megalomaniacal real estate buffoon with a penchant for pronouncing "nuclear" as "NUCULEAAAR" --- still love you, Gene Hackman.

It would be great if we could see a dramatic, non over-the-top version of him where he sees himself as the hero who opposes Superman from an ideological standpoint, self-made man VS. godlike alien.

And is it just me or does Joaquin Phoenix resemble Creepy Glenn from "Mad Men" a bit too much?

  • I've always thought of Luthor in the next movie as the Donald Trump to Superman's Obama with Luthor ginning up support to get the alien removed from power.

  • Joe Grunenwald

I could see Joaquin Phoenix being a decent Maxwell Lord. Well, decent for how he was portrayed from 2005 or so on.

  • Al Borland's Beard

    Calendar Man?

  • foolsage

Damn it, you already made the Calendar Man joke. Should have read more before posting. Sigh.

  • Sara_Tonin00

please tell me that is not a real thing.

  • stella

Oh it is and it might just be my favorite thing.

  • Bert_McGurt

Oh, it gets better. His real name is Julian Gregory Day.

  • Sara_Tonin00

  • I think Phoenix would be a great left-hand swerve for Luthor. Rather than going the Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey madvillain-moron or even one of the TV Luthors.

Think of this as Commodus as a super villain.

I think I'd go for that.

  • NateMan

Brother Blood. Cult leader and supervillain trainer. I know they just brought him up in Arrow, but he's the kind of charismatic and intense character JP could excel at.

  • Aaron Schulz

I think he could rock Ra's Al Ghul actually, but LL is supposed to be a super genius thats kinda creepy and sinister but at the same time charismatic, dude can pull all 3 of those off.

On a side note, doesnt it seem like this movie is getting a bit to big for its britches, with all the casting and characters involved i feel like it needs to be two movies

  • BlackRabbit

Metallo-former whacko merc trapped in a powerful robot shell? Candy. Or have him be one of Flash's Rogues as groundwork for that movie.
