Lethal Weapon 5 On the Fast Track

Just Retire Already / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | October 7, 2008 | Comments (12)

It’s funny — 21 years ago, Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh first uttered what would become an oft repeated phrase in the Lethal Weapon franchise: “I’m too old for this shit.” By the time Lethal Weapon 4 rolled around in 1998, everyone involved in the franchise was too old for this shit.

But there’s money to be had, folks. And Shane Black, who occasionally strikes gold (Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has written a script for a fifth installment, and it’s being fast-tracked by the powers that be. Danny Glover is nearly 65 now, and most states have mandatory retirement ages for cops between 55 and 60. But this time, according to the spec script description, they’re really going to retire. They just have to solve one last case. No. Really.

But so help me God, if they bring back Joe Pesci for this installment, I’m going to choke someone. What we do know, however, is that Columbus Short (Stomp the Yard) has been approached about playing Murtaugh’s son. Otherwise, it’s not even certain that Glover and the Jew hater will return, though I suspect if there’s money involved, they’ll be all too happy to come back. Gibson hasn’t really been in front of a camera in five years, but he’s got three projects in the works (he plays a cop in two of them).

I don't even like these movies and I know this is a bad idea. Just say no to Mel. He's never going to redeem himself.

Dustin

Take a look at the shit they've been releasing as "movies" lately. I suggest that you start working on those forearms (in whatever manner you please, I won't judge) cause' your gonna have to choke a bitch.

I'M TOO OLD for this SHIT!

I like to keep an open mind about series extensions that initially seem like a bad idea. After all, there have been a few unwanted sequels recently that didn't completely suck (Live Free And Die Hard, Rocky Balboa). And Shane Black is good and Mel has wisely kept out of the spotlight lately so there is no overexposure factor. I am really starting to talk myself into this...Yeah, this is going to work!

Who am I trying to kid? This will blow. Where the hell did I leave my flamethrower? Forget choke a bitch, I'm gonna roast a bitch!

I almost cried when Joe Pesci told the story about his frog that he ran over with a bike. I'm a dipshit.

Some penance is going to be required for bringing up Shane Black without mentioning The Last Boy Scout. I'll wait.

And you can't forget The Long Kiss Goodnight...
