Leave Me Out

I just can’t wrap my head around the Let the Right One In remake, regardless of today’s buzz over this new clip. Dustin posted the international trailer a while back and that was just awful. Admittedly, this clip is better. It has a bit of a Halloween vibe to it, what with the goings on going on right under peoples’ noses and a little bit of the Silence of the Lambs rock song signaling mayhem thing - those sorts of real life moody sequences really toast my marshmallows. Still, I fail to see this as anything other than a let’s-get-in-on-the-hot-vampire-trend-and-make-some-money scam.

Have a look and weigh in.

Opening October 1, 2010, Let Me In is directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and stars Richard Jenkins, Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smitt-McPhee.

Well, that was less than impressive.

I forgot Richard Jenkins was in this. Extra points! And this clip is pretty good; it's an interesting take on what they did in the Swedish film. One of my all time favorite movies is a remake (Carpenter's The Thing) so I'll hold off on saying it sucks until I've seen it. I really am hoping it's a good adaptation.

... and one of my favorite films is a remake too, THE MALTESE FALCON with Humphrey Bogart. Sigh, they don't make remakes like they used to.

I will probably see this, because I want to:

1. Judge it on its own merits.
2. Compare it to the original, because I've seen it twice (with both sets of subtitles) and I can't NOT compare it.

The big problem with showing a scene from this, is that the movie is such a quiet "little" movie that individual scenes just don't have the punch of the whole movie.

Most pointless movie... EVER. Trailer looks tardo as shit and I don't like either of the kids in this film. So fuck this one up its stupid ass.

Well, I had missed that trailer when it was posted a couple of months ago. I really hated the principle of remaking this movie. The original was an amazing film and not what I'd consider a "vampire horror movie" at all, which is the tack this new one looks to be taking. I am usually completely opposed to the dumbed down remakes that America makes for the illiterate and easily confused audiences that make up the lowest common denominator.

But...

I think it would be good if we exposed the newer generations to an expanded view of vampires. We have a lot of ground to take back from the Twilight movement. There are hundreds of teen vampire romance novels out there now. If we don't do something, all the slack-jawed, glassy-eyed youth of future generations will be completely and rigidly constrained to the idea of vampires being emo metrosexuals with fine, upstanding (Mormon) moral values and my little pony sun tans.

So, in the interest of the future of society, I'm willing to compromise. Won't you please, think of the children.

I guess, I'm going to bite back my bile, and let this one in.

And that is why I always check the backseat before I get into a car.

That looks stupid. Kudos for the BOC song on '80s week though.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at September 3, 2010 9:44 PM

Eh. It seems to have lost a lot of the artistry that "Let the Right One In" had. This lacks that strange atmosphere. And yet, I love Richard Jenkins.

Posted by: citizen_cris at September 3, 2010 10:35 PM

Who the fuck would try to capture someone in their car? Jesus christ.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at September 4, 2010 1:40 AM

I got no audio, so: Which BOC song is it?

And also: Why the fuck do I have to give "post a comment" my name and e-mail about once a week? I've been commenting here for like four fucking years, I would think at some point I'd become a full-fledged member.

The original wasn't that good. I really don't care for pedophilic-homosexual vampires. Also the "scares" in the original weren't scary and the cgi was pretty bad.

Posted by: comeonbrah at September 4, 2010 11:59 AM

I really like Chloe Moretz, I thought she was outstanding in Kick Ass. I'll probably see this just to see how she does in the role. But that clip was not impressive. Was it supposed to be scary? Why couldn't the kid honk the horn? He was certainly flailing around enough.

I'll see it when it comes out ... in order to validate my I'm So Sick Of Vampire Movies Give It A Rest ticket, if not for anything else.

Posted by: SB at September 4, 2010 1:33 PM

The song is "Burning' For You", 1981. It makes absolutely no sense being in this scene, since no one is a vampire in the daylight.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at September 5, 2010 12:25 AM

Godtopus damn it, "Burnin' For You".

Posted by: Three-nineteen at September 5, 2010 12:26 AM

Well, at least they didn't ruin "Veteran of the Psychic Wars."

Posted by: , at September 5, 2010 2:28 AM

I guess "Don't Fear The Reaper" would've been too obvious.

Posted by: snapnhiss at September 5, 2010 6:39 PM

*** "Metrosexual" vampires - lol! ***

One of the best vampire films that did not have a fashion consultant on the movie payroll...

"Near Dark"

Like everything else they will probably make a remake of it with pretty emo tweeners equipped with the latest fashion trends and Blackberries.

Posted by: yoplait at September 5, 2010 11:22 PM

...when I first heard that there was going to be a remake of Let the Right One In, I seriously thought it was a joke.

After seeing this, I think I died a little.
I want to see it to compare, but I don't want to walk out of the theater all pissy and disappointed either. I've done that enough in the last few years.

Posted by: Candee at September 6, 2010 12:28 PM

I have no idea what to make of that. The original is 100 times better...not a complete surprise either.

Thanks so much! I've been researching almost all night for something such as this to include in a story I'm just writing.
