Kristen Stewart gets a terrible rap around here, although starring in Twilight, it’s hard to say she doesn’t deserve it. But truthfully, she’s a pretty decent actress — good in Adventureland and decent in In the Land of Women. She’s kind of an interesting actress, or at least significantly more interesting than her male contemporaries.

Anyway, I wasn’t all that enthusiastic about her taking the role of Joan Jett in The Runaways biopic, but it’s a savvy move on her part. With that, and Adventureland, at least she’s not trapped in the same role, exploiting her tweener demographic. A few images of her as Jett have leaked, and as much as I hate to say it: It’s pretty spot on. Take a look:

Mmm. Gotta get me some that.

*some of that*

dammit

Posted by: Kballs at June 12, 2009 10:37 AM

She doesn't give a damn about her bad reputation.

Posted by: slower lower at June 12, 2009 10:37 AM

I hate myself for loving this.

Posted by: TK at June 12, 2009 10:43 AM

You know what I like? Stoner girls. They are laid back and just want to listen to good music. They don't get pissy about things like "jobs" or "surviving". They wanna have a laugh and maybe eat some cookies.

Kristen Stewart fits the bill.

Posted by: adam at June 12, 2009 10:47 AM

Right now it just looks like Kristen Stewart with black hair, I'd have to see how she is in the film. I don't mind her though, she is a decent actress. Twilight aside, she just seems full of tics in that film.

Posted by: Carrie at June 12, 2009 10:53 AM

I'm not a big fan of biopics overall, but I guess she looks the part. Sort of. I think I'm a little young to have actual memories of Joan Jett that don't involve VH1 classic.

Good for her though, picking a part that I'm sure her agent told her she'd be stupid not to take (i.e, playing a dishrag in the emo vampire movies) shouldn't take down her career.

Posted by: Genny (actually Rusty now) at June 12, 2009 10:54 AM

She's pretty good in The Messengers, as well. Lots of potential in the film. Stupid CGI-based studio meddling ruining a perfectly good Pang Brothers psychological ghost story with horrible, horrible crows.

Posted by: Robert at June 12, 2009 11:08 AM

Joan Jett was my only same-sex crush ever. I was disturbingly fascinated with her. I still think she was the most gorgeous, touchable, scary female ever.

Consequently, for my money no one will ever be able to satisfactorily impersonate her, and the thought of this Runaways "biopic" is making me cringe.

But I gotta say, if somebody's going to try to portray Joan Jett, I can't think of anyone better than Kristen Stewart, and I wish her all the luck in the world.

Posted by: Jerce at June 12, 2009 11:11 AM

God, she looks fantastic, it's just right. Plus, her weird spaced out goofiness will probably suit the part, since she always seems like she's on drugs as it is.

Posted by: Caroline at June 12, 2009 11:17 AM

whatever. kristen stewart can only play petulant, sexually frustrated teenagers and i hate every joan jett song i've ever heard, though i'm sure she's a fierce lady.

Posted by: kriskris at June 12, 2009 11:20 AM

The pants seem all wrong. We wore jeans over our navels back when Joan Jett was new. Other than that, far out.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 12, 2009 11:21 AM

"...she always seems like she's on drugs as it is."

Oop. You accidentally put the word "seems" in there...

Posted by: Skitz at June 12, 2009 11:24 AM

Word, BWeaves.

Posted by: admin at June 12, 2009 11:25 AM

BWeaves, I am willing to forgive some historical inaccuracy for the privilege of never seeing those horrible pants again. Whoever is keeping those pants alive hates the female figure. I don't think I have ever owned anything less flattering to my posterior.

Posted by: Phaeolus at June 12, 2009 11:28 AM

I'm surprised she was let off of the Meyer compound to film this. I thought she was indentured until Breaking Dawn was finished filming, at which point she'd be eliminated/brainwashed into the family.

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at June 12, 2009 11:41 AM

While the movie looks mildly interesting, I am concerned with the rise of the emo-mullet. Every simpering bag of tween is going to want that hair cut.

I'll start polishing my eye-gouging spoons. Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.

Posted by: Morgagod at June 12, 2009 11:47 AM

She's a wasteoid and way overrated.

Chuck her in the Natasha Lyonne pile.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 12, 2009 11:52 AM

I will withhold judgement.

For now.

i hate every joan jett song i've ever heard, though i'm sure she's a fierce lady.

*sputters*

WHAT THE...?????

Posted by: boo at June 12, 2009 12:03 PM

She's nowhere near as good looking as Joan Jett and Bad Reputation and Hate Myself run in "heavy rotation" on Youtube a quarter of a century later so the memory of her as THE punk princess hasn't exactly dimmed. I wonder how they're going to deal with the lezbo aspect because Jett has never come out even though she is usually described as openly lezbo and plays Dinah Shore week in Palm Springs.

Posted by: OscarTamerz at June 12, 2009 12:16 PM

Posted by: Robert at June 12, 2009 11:08 AM

I kind of liked that movie as well, mostly because of her. I have to say I liked the crows, but only because I like crows. I don't know anything about the original story. But, I did enjoy her in it.

I also liked her in Speak.

Those pics made me remember when I used to melt my eyeliner pencil with a lighter before applying. Hm, I wonder why I had conjunctivitis almost continually in 1986-7?

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 12, 2009 12:29 PM

Okay, I'll concede on the pictures looking good thus far, but she'd better bring a whole lot of kickass to the part.

Posted by: branded at June 12, 2009 12:34 PM

I don't know, I kind of feel like Joan Jett's lips could beat the shit out of Kristen Stewart.

Posted by: Todd at June 12, 2009 1:04 PM

Stewart is nowhere NEAR as good looking as Joan Jett NOW, and she sure as shit can't hold a candle to the young Joan Jett. I also haven't seen Stewart do anything other than "petulant," so I'm skeptical she can channel Jett.

Posted by: jimbob at June 12, 2009 1:04 PM

Yes, but can she ROCK like Joan Jett? I sincerely doubt it.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 12, 2009 1:13 PM

You forgot to mention (or perhaps were unaware) that DAKOTA FUCKING FANNING is set to play Cherrie Currie.

I mean, give me a goddamn break. How the hell would she even begin to know how to play someone as bad-ass and fucked up as Currie? How will she prepare, hire a crab-wrangler? Has the little creep even seen "Foxes?"

BAH.

Posted by: bev rage at June 12, 2009 1:42 PM

I haz a crush.

Posted by: pseudoliterati at June 12, 2009 2:13 PM

Haha, I kind of love her. She's completely fucking embarrassed to be part of the Twilight phenomenon, and every time she's forced to speak about it I get the feeling that she's THIS close to apologizing. One day, 20 years from now, she will. And I will love her even more.

Posted by: figgy at June 12, 2009 2:28 PM

I liked her in 'Into the Wild', and for that I'm willing to forgive.

Posted by: sailboat at June 12, 2009 3:13 PM

She kind of looks the part, but I feel like this should have been done a few years ago with Jolie.

Posted by: Eep at June 12, 2009 3:26 PM

Looks cool, and we can always trun the sound down on the DVD and play Runaways CDs while watching this (this is not a drag myself to theater kind of movie).

Can she sing? Do they plan on haveing her sing in the movie? Who plays the creepy guy who started the band? His name eascapes me at the momnet.

This post is one of the cases where I won't mind humming the title track all day. Will now scroll through my iPod.

Posted by: Brian at June 12, 2009 3:55 PM

Hey who's playing Lita Ford?

I don't know, I kind of feel like Joan Jett's lips could beat the shit out of Kristen Stewart.

Posted by: Todd at June 12, 2009 1:04 PM

No kidding. Hell, even the ones on her face...

Posted by: Che Grovera at June 12, 2009 5:40 PM

I almost like Kristen Stewart just for her general disdain towards the 'Twilight' movies and if she can channel even some of Joan's character and general bad-assedness, I'm prepared to actually appreciate her.
Now, go forth young Pajibans and listen to Joan and the Blackhearts burn down Iggy's "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Be healed by her greatness.

Posted by: Spender at June 12, 2009 6:13 PM

And my thanks to Che Grovera for the fine spray of Guinness Stout that now coats my keyboard and monitor.

Posted by: Spender at June 12, 2009 6:15 PM

Wait, so Kristen Stewart is cool because she is openly disdainful of the movies that are earning her big money & making her a household name, but Katherine Heigl is an ungrateful, mouthy bitch for being openly disdainful of the movies & tv show that are earning her big money & making her a household name? Huh. Interesting.

I'm not a Heigl fan and I'm (so far) unimpressed with Stewart, but the bizarre double standard for these two is um, bizarre.

Posted by: Lainey at June 12, 2009 6:51 PM

Okay, Lainey, we exaggerate. Stewart won't openly bite the hand that is feeding her. She has let it leak that she'd like to be taken a bit more seriously as an actress and is being given the opportunity to prove herself.
Heigl takes a lot of crap for speaking her mind (which is wrong) but takes the crap for speaking her mind in ways that seem to diminish the accomplishments of those around her (which is just and good).
May I mention that Heigl has yet to prove herself as an actress OR a box-office draw?
Now, may I mention I'd love 'em both, real hard?

Posted by: Spender at June 12, 2009 8:05 PM

Joan Jett was not a dirtbag like Stewart look like in these pics. And she was hot in the Runaways, if underage.

Posted by: Meander at June 12, 2009 8:41 PM

I'm just not sure that anyone... male or female... has a nose quite like Joan's.

Posted by: Spender at June 12, 2009 9:25 PM

I hope she'll do an okay job, but she just doesn't have that Joan Jett glint in her eyes.

Posted by: Xerxes at June 12, 2009 10:37 PM

Gotta say, before I clicked on the link from the homepage, I thought this was gonna be something about that Adam kid from that idol show. These pics look like him, rather than Joan.

Posted by: Rykker at June 13, 2009 3:20 AM

So I Googled a bunch of Runaways and Joan Jett photos and in NONE of them does she look as disheveled as this.

I gets a bad feeling ...

"I'm not a Heigl fan..."

Posted by: Lainey at June 12, 2009 6:51 PM

Hmmmmmm, could have fooled me...

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 13, 2009 5:54 AM

I agree with bev rage - more worried about Fanning than about Stewart. She did sing in Into The Wild but not like Jett. However, she was good in Into the Wild and she was good in The Cake Eaters. Maybe she'll channel something special. Also, I don't think these pics. are for the movie role. I think they are just her with the new haircut, out and about. She and Fanning have been hunkered down in a studio working on the music the last few days.

Posted by: midfan at June 13, 2009 11:13 AM

Oh, Slim, you big crabbypants - everything's not black & white in my world. I can dislike a person and still be able to recognize when they're being given shit & someone else is given a pass for the same type of thing.

And for the record, I don't even agree with Heigl. I think she and Stewart both act like spoiled children (and Stewart acts like a stoned, spoiled child) who haven't figured out that publicly biting the hand that feeds you isn't the smartest career move. Spender, I get your point and honestly, I don't disagree with what you're saying. However, I wouldn't credit Stewart with being a box-office draw so much as Twilight was the draw, regardless of who played the vapid Bella.

Posted by: Lainey at June 13, 2009 7:01 PM

Posted by: Lainey at June 13, 2009 7:01 PM

So what you are saying is, that you want a three-way with Heigl and Stewart.

Filthy...and hot.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 14, 2009 6:24 AM

Get outta' my head! Yep, that's exactly what I was saying.

I heard Kristen Stewart can DO THE SPLITS ACROSS THE ENTIRE FLOOR!!

Posted by: Lainey at June 14, 2009 2:04 PM

I'm not a Heigl fan and I'm (so far) unimpressed with Stewart, but the bizarre double standard for these two is um, bizarre.

Posted by: Lainey at June 12, 2009 6:51 PM

It isn't bizarre at all, Lainey. Why would you be surprised that Pajibans are more comfortable with Stewart's passive-aggressiveness?

That being said, how discomfitting is it to have BSlim inside your head?

Posted by: Che Grovera at June 14, 2009 6:16 PM

I'm fairly certain she's not in costume here. So props to her for getting that haircut instead of pussying out and wearing a wig to save her ~long, beautiful hair~.

Posted by: Smithy at June 15, 2009 6:10 PM

Your previous missive on the Runaways pic told me a lot. You say they were the first all-girl rock band? Don't let the members of Fanny or Isis hear you say that, or you may have one or two less fingers to type with.

You also didn't know Lita Ford was in the band, which any Wikipedia search would have told you (or, God forbid, the actual Runaways homepage!). And Carmen Elektra plays a bisexual in Joan Jett's last video, which is not real life, so the "she's her girlfriend?" thing was way weak.

Add that to whining about Kristen Stewart's casting and judging her acting talent from one film (which was also acting) and a couple of interviews (which were, um, not), and I wonder if you even know what a film is. Research much? At least you knew The Runaways were a band and not a pack of homeless kids.

I realize that those who can't do usually criticize those who can as a defense mechanism, but please write about what you know next time. You know, like really bad blogs.
