Katy Perry Will Host SNL. Host, Not Sing. Host. HOST. (Bwuh?)

So many news stories get broken, or ignited, on Twitter these days — sometimes in fun ways like Steve Martin’s banjo album, sometimes apparently breaking up marriages. It’s unclear where Katy Perry’s announcement that she will host the December 10 installment of “Saturday Night Live” will fall on the spectrum, unless one of you is from at least three weeks in the future and can spoil it for us. No? Fine. I guess Stephen Hawking was right.
If any of Perry’s past non-singing performances are any indication, she will most likely act like a 1980s version of a nerd, a ditz, and Elmo’s best friends will almost certainly be the focus of at least one sketch. Whether Katy Perry can stretch more than a sweater will probably have to wait until the second half of the episode, but I don’t imagine anyone will call her appearance a waste. I’m saying, this incarnation of SNL will probably use her exactly right. And that has no bearing on the episode’s final quality. At the very least, Perry’s tour partner Robyn will be the musical guest, who could be much much worse.
Somewhere between those extremes (but closer to “worse”) is the remixed trailer for My Week With Marilyn featuring Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” The Weinstein Company dropped the video last weekend, just in time for me to capitalize on the accidental synchronicity with this announcement and the movie’s premiere on Wednesday. I really want to see this movie, I think (that Eddie Redmayne keeps me giving me the stink-eye), but the combination of these two pin-up sexpots isn’t doing it for me. Maybe with the acoustic take? I’m willing to be convinced it’s good…
Rob Payne also writes the indie comic The Unstoppable Force and tweets on the Twitter @RobOfWar. (He hopes you fight cancer here and fight poverty here.) He’s pretty sure if the video featured Perry and Williams making out, he’d appreciate it a lot more.

Can we stop for a moment and talk about "The One That Got Away"? I saw the video this weekend, and Katie dear that's just a fucking cop out. I understand that she doesn't write the songs, or probably provide input on the video, but the entire point of the song is regret for someone who "got away" i.e. left your life. The video is essentially for "Leader of the Pack". Having an argument with your beau and having him drive off a cliff is tragic, but a completely different kind of tragic than regretting a failed romance. For some reason this bothered me a lot. Plus the guy was a douche artist punk. Driving off a cliff was his best case scenario. I may be overthinking this.
