That Karate Kid Remake? Here's Photographic Evidence It's Actually Happening

You remember when we announced that there’d be a Karate Kid remake starring Will Smith’s kid and Jackie Chan? Of course you don’t! You blocked that shit out, either cause you have an inordinate fondness of the original, or because you watched it after you turned 13, realized it was a cinematic wet sandwich (I mean: Come on), and stored that news in the apathetic section of your brain.

Well, you can’t ignore it any longer. They are filming this mother f*@ker, and after about four hours of editing, the Smith family is gonna cram it down your throat. And they’ll do it with such kind eyes that you’ll say please and thank you and ask for a sequel.

I mean: Who doesn’t want to see a Karate Kid remake where Jaden Smith’s character’s name is Dre? Dre, y’all! Like the Doctor. Only tiny. And really fucking well connected. Oh, and Mr. Miyagi’s name has been changed, too, to Mr. Han. Like Han Solo. Or like Hand me a hammer claw so I can scoop out my eyeballs.

Anyway, here’s some photos from the set. The first one is the best, because it suggests that there’s a love story in the Karate Kid remake. But let me remind you: Jaden Smith is 11 years old. Love story? Dude needs to deal with puberty first.

But ah: It does remind me of Elizabeth Shue, who — thanks to Karate Kid and Adventures in Babysitting — was my first movie love.

I read Jackie Chan's autobiography as a kid, so yeah, I will probably see this and like it. I'm sorry.

I mean hey, did you know Jackie Chan got hit in the face with a nunchuck by Bruce Lee? I will see any movie starring a guy that Bruce Lee hit in the face with a nunchuck.

Is he about to do splits across the Great Wall of China?

Posted by: jM at December 1, 2009 11:16 AM

(raises hand)
Excuse me. Karate is a Japanese martial art, not Chinese.
It's nitpicky, but who the hell isn't here.

Posted by: Badalamenti at December 1, 2009 11:34 AM

Why does Jackie Chan have a pedophile mustaches....is this a different kind of training camp?

Posted by: Nimue at December 1, 2009 11:34 AM

Badalamenti, I believe the discipline in this movie is kung fu, not karate. Kid's got some flexibility, but he's freakin' 11, so whatever.

Posted by: mrcreosote at December 1, 2009 11:49 AM

Well, fine.
I am going to have a pet duck, but I will introduce it as my pet goose.
The ducks name, will be Pigeon.

OK, so I'm not wrong because the first time I watched The Karate Kid was as a junior in high school and I was kinda like "…um, lame"? I missed out on a lot of these "seminal" kid flicks as a child and my general policy has just been to not watch them because there's no way I'll get the same experience and then I'll just be that person who hates The Goonies instead of that person who's never seen The Goonies and at least if you're the latter, people are just baffled rather than angry. However, I let my high school boyfriend talk me into watching The Karate Kid and… yeah, lame.

This looks pretty lame too. Also, here's hoping Jaden grows soon because at the moment it looks like he got his height genes from Jada and ear genes from Will and out of that parental combination, that's exactly the opposite of what you want.

I feel a scream coming on.

Karate Kid "re-imagined" now with 20% more urban, yo'?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 1, 2009 12:15 PM

Am I the only one who thinks that the Smithling could play Riley if they ever made a live-action movie from The Boondocks?

Posted by: longcoat000 at December 1, 2009 12:18 PM

I wasn't sure about this one but that last photo sold me.

Posted by: Adventureman at December 1, 2009 12:27 PM

Han? Man, you are straight out of a comic book.

TAKE IT BACK! Take it back right now before someone hears you.

Oh look I get to be a fucking movie star because daddy is the Fresh Prince. Meritocracy my ass. The connections pass down generation to generation, networks of nepotism intertwining like medieval royalty. Let in a fresh pair of tits or a clever rhymer every few years to keep the bloodlines fresh. Bunch of fucking hemophiliac werewolves.

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at December 1, 2009 1:06 PM

If Smithling's father has a cameo, I'm all over this movie like fucking stink on rice... For real reals, I fucking love Wil Smith. Lurve him even. I own all of his movies and will loudly defend his brilliant acting style(s) until my throat becomes hoarse from the screaming. So he believes in Xenu Aliens sucking his totem-force outta his peehole when Judgement Day comes. Who the frick hasn't thought that maybe - maybe - he knows what he's talking about? He's the Fresh Prince, bitches. Maybe the Freshest Prince of all...

Yes. I have been binge drinking since four in the morning - What's your point?

The.
Fucking.
Freshest.

Posted by: Skitz at December 1, 2009 1:13 PM

Do. not. like.

Also, the last picture scared me. Bad. Please don't ever do that again because I'm pretty sure I got a shot of pre-pubescent junk and no amount of brain scrubbing is gonna help.

Posted by: myysharona (formerly Sharon) at December 1, 2009 1:53 PM

So... Will Smith's kid is gonna put the beat down on some Chinese kids?

Posted by: Zerokool at December 1, 2009 2:16 PM

I can't believe no one's mentioned one of the best comments ever on this website, the one that said that the kid wasn't even old enough to wax off.

So I am reminding you all of it. Because he is 11. And there's a love story.

Posted by: figgy at December 1, 2009 3:15 PM

BALDAMETI!
Thank you!!!
I was JUST saying, wasn't Miyagi Japanese in the orginal?
With like, the japanese name, the bonsai trees, taking the fucking kid to Japan at one point?
Also, what the fuck is Jaden Smith gonna punch his way out of with those skinny fucking arms?

Posted by: Nadine at December 1, 2009 3:16 PM

"...what the fuck is Jaden Smith gonna punch his way out of with those skinny arms?"

It's not what he's going to punch his way out of, Nadine - it's what he's going to punch his way into - our hearts. He's going to punch and crane-kick his way right into our hearts...

Posted by: Skitz at December 1, 2009 4:07 PM

This could be an awesome Black Dynamite prequel.

Posted by: zito at December 1, 2009 5:46 PM

Hey Jaden; just pushing a girl into a fountain isn't karate, dipshit.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at December 1, 2009 6:00 PM

I miss Chris Tucker.

Posted by: Chickaboom at December 1, 2009 6:58 PM

China will never be a good substitute for Reseda.

I will be pissed if the Cobra Kai villains are a bunch of asian kids who act like they have some sort of 'white privilege'.

I hope it's good so that 11 year olds could come out of the theater all delusional n' shit and ready to kick some ass. Oh come on, you know you were the same way after you saw the OG Karate Kid and Rocky.

Posted by: Grrravy at December 1, 2009 10:01 PM

What's the point of a Zabka-free Karate Kid?

Posted by: muchsarcasm at December 2, 2009 7:25 PM

That comment was the first thing i thought of when I saw this post, figgy. Really the best comment ever.

Posted by: ed newman at December 2, 2009 8:22 PM

that was awsome high kick

Posted by: jayquan0 at January 12, 2010 3:58 PM

I hope they actually change this piece of garbage to The Kung Fu Kid, because that's what it focuses on. Karate = Japanese, and Kung Fu = Chinese. I love Jackie Chan too, but he must have been drinking when they presented this film to him. I mean holy cow they couldn't actually do this with an older kid, or someone who actually uses Karate? This movie, unfortunately, will rake in money and piss me off as it will trivialize it's predecessors despite having no basis in them whatsoever. I hope the people who wrote this piece of crap (I know it's not even released yet, but I still know it's going to suck an elephants balls) wake up from whatever substance they abused an rethink their creative outlets.
