First Images of Josh Brolin in Jonah Hex

The first images of Josh Brolin’s in Jonah Hex made it online today (images of Megan Fox appeared a few weeks ago). Based on the graphic novel, Jonah Hex is about a scarred bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on liberating the South by raising an army of the undead. It also stars John Malkovich as the villain, Turnbull, and Megan Fox as Leila, the woman who barely wears any clothes. It’s a wild west horror thriller directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!), making his live action directorial debut. The script comes from Neveldine & Taylor (Crank, High Voltage and the upcoming Gamer), so I expect it’s all sorts of frenetic and depraved, though I suspect Hayward will round off Neveldine & Tayor’s more maniacal edges (shame).

Anyway, here are the first photos from the set. My first impression: Josh Brolin is short.

....uhh, that face thingy doesn't really translate well off the page, does it?

Can't say that I'm impressed by these photos. Granted they're not official promo shots, but the comic version resonates a whole lot more. Brolin's eyes seem lost, if that makes any sense...

Um... Looks like the old, "Your face will freeze like that" chestnut actually came true for Jonah.

Man. These aren't actual publicity stills, I hope.

Wasn't Jonah Hex's eye screwed up as well as the mouth thing? Eh, whatever. I'm sure they'll find some way to have Megan Fox straddle a motorcycle, or a horse, or a cactus and the movie will make 100 million.

This movie sounds as crazy as a shithouse rat.

Hmmm...I think this looks pretty cool. As for the story...(hang on, Dustin, I'm gonna nerd out on you here) some of my fellow geeks may remember the earlier Vertigo Jonah Hex series that dealt with a lot of this supernatural mumbo-jumbo. They were weird as all hell, but they were written by Tim Truman so they were also pretty darkly funny and great. I've really enjoyed the latest series, which is a straight-up Western, where Jonah just kills anyone needs killin'.

I'm curious to see (or read, I guess) how this turns out. 20-30 years ago this would have been a part that, without question, needed to be played by Eastwood. I'd like to see what Brolin does. (now, watch it be shitballs retarded, and I look like a dumbass for putting this much thought into it...)

I also wonder how many reasons for the scar they'll slip into the script. One of my favorites from those older Vertigo series:

Bartender: Say, that's a nasty scar you got there, mister. How'd you get it?

Hex: Bit my cheek eatin'.

He doesn't look nearly gruesome and scarred enough for my tastes. Here's hoping they find some way to pull off Hex's un-lidded eye.

God, I thought that was Sylvester Stallone.

Oh, Josh. Everyone knows that wearing pants INSIDE your short boots makes you look stumpy. Have you READ GoFugYourself?

Looks like Jack McCall on Deadwood.

Yes, he had an unlidded eye too. Where is it?

Sadly, the face does not translate well into live action. Hex is more impressive in the comic and animated. I'm sure I've seen him animated. Wasn't it an episode of Batman? Can someone confirm this for me or let me know if I was hallucinating?

Adam Baldwin as Hex on the Justice League animated series was perfect. This... not s'much.

jeez. Give the movie a chance. You're saying it doesn't translate well based simply on two non-promotional photos. Translating a purely animated character like mickey mouse or scooby doo or whatever into live action is usually a retarded idea but a cowboy? A cowboy is human so getting a human to do it can translate very well. The photos are not impressive but I don't think the photos say or mean much anyway.

Re: Four Eyes

There was an episode of Batman that was mostly flashback to Jonah Hex vs. Ra's al Ghul where Hex was pretty old, and the JL episode James mentioned where they go back in time and Hex is around the age we'll see in the movie.

As for the unlidded eye, there's the risk that people will associate him too much with Two-Face, since the effect was done so well in The Dark Knight.

"there's a risk people will associate him too much with Two-face"

the unlidded eye will probably be added in post-production.
to NOT have the eye unlidded because it may remind someone of two-face is ridiculous. the eye is part of what makes hex's face 'iconic'. it would be like saying, nightcrawler can't have blue skin, mystique already has blue skin, people will be confused, just make nightcrawler sparkle instead.

Thank you Craig! That question was bugging me for a while. It's the perpetual "I know the face but can't place the name" problem.

And barf, I'm biased against the movie already, simply because of the presence of Megan Fox. Sorry. Oh yeah, and ALSO because of the non-promotional shots. It's the scarring dude, the scarring. If it's not done right...*shakes head*

Maybe the trailer'll make me change my mind.

Megan Fox as Leila, the woman who barely wears any clothes.

Now if that character description could also be applied also to the future roles of ScarJo, Biel, Jolie, Hathaway, & Christina Hendricks it would be like Christmas all over again with each new release.
