Thanks for Trying Out, Here's Your Rom-Com

Apparently, the consolation prize for not donning the America tights is a rom-com. I reported yesterday that Chris Evans was joining Anna Faris, and now Pajiba sometimer Christopher Campbell reported over at Cinematical that John Krasinski is opting to join the franchise rom-com Something Borrowed. Based on the clit-lit series by Emily Giffin (anyone? anyone?), Ginnifer Goodwin will be playing the lead who steals her best friend’s fiance. Krasinski isn’t to play the nogudnik altar-leaver-er, but rather Goodwin’s best bud in a supporting role.

To date, Krasinski’s had to romantically pursue Jenna Fischer, Mandy Moore, Maya Rudolph, and Squishface Zellweger. I didn’t think Krasinski had the chops to carry a lead until Away We Go, and this a far fucking cry from that hipsterical sentiment. But apparently Hilary Swank — who’s producing the project — thinks Halpert’s got the diaperin’ skills, since the character is slated to play the lead in the proposed sequel Something Blue. There’s already a fucking sequel for a flick that’s yet to be shown?

I wanted to see Krasinski in an action role. I mean, he’s no Alexi Lalas (are you happy now, Rusty, goddamn you?) and he’s certainly no William Goss, but I think the kid’s got the charisma to pull off the role. Actually I was hoping for Thomas Jane or Nathan Fillion, but they’re skewing youngish for the Cap.

I’m sick of talking about superheroes and romantic comedies already. Isn’t it SXSW yet?

Prisco, those books would make your head explode into a pink mist of rage. Stay far away from the cinematic adaptations. Giffin is basically a hack.

Honestly - I don't think the Giffin books are all that bad. Maybe it's because I was at a big firm in New York and hated it and maybe it's because I read "Something Borrowed" just before I got married, but I really think there's much worse out there.

Who are Lalas and Goss?

I read Something Blue when I was working for a large chain bookstore; we were encouraged to borrow books, the better to recommend them to customers. This worked out well for me since, even though I'm kind of a lit snob, I've always had a niggling curiosity about the kind of crap we were forced to sell, chick lit in particular. This book impressed me by not being totally horrendous. Of course the plot was completely disposable, but the woman at least knew how to put a sentence together, which is something.

However, if I recall correctly, the fiancé-stealing one is supposed to be kind of ugly. Ugly, Goodwin ain't.

Good Lord, I love Jim as much as anyone here (except Pinky, maybe), but he looks so weird in that header pic. Like he got collagen injections in his lips or something.
