Jada Pinkett Smith's 'Magic Mike XXL' Role Was Originally Written For a Man Because Why the F*ck Not?

Jada Pinkett Smith went on The Queen Latifah Show to apparently battle over their respective loves of Will Smith, and also maybe talk about some acting stuff she’s doing. In addition to the upcoming Gotham, Smith has been cast in the Magic Mike sequel, and while she can’t reveal what her role is, she says it was originally written for a man.

This is fantastic for so many reasons. While we ARE making some headway with female characters in our Katnisses and our Black Widows, women are still written, in general, pretty shittily. Male characters, on the other hand, usually have more than one defining character trait (i.e. they can be “strongly written” instead of just “strong”). Their maleness is not the crux of their being. They frequently talk to other characters about a wide range of topics (including themselves, their interests, or their feelings), instead of just, as Alison Bechdel famously pointed out, other male characters. Most female characters do not have these freedoms. If Jada Pinkett Smith is a character with any sort authority (and maybe she’s not, but given the pride at the gender-swapping, I think it’s safe to assume as much), it’s much more likely that, having the role originally written for a man, her entire personhood will not be wrapped up in executing that authority.

Until the day comes that complex characters can be written for women as easily and ubiquitously as they are for men, this is a better-than-nothing alternative. Add this to the list of reasons I’m excited for this movie.

The other reason?
