Gary Ross has chosen talent over age-and-body-type appropriateness for Hunger Games. selecting Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) over Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld for the lead role. Thoughts, besides “Man, she is attractive”? (Source: The Wrap)

Do any of these teen sci-fi/fantasy action adaptations really hit? It's kinda starting to depress me, actually.

Posted by: Jay at March 17, 2011 9:50 AM

No, not "Twilight", that's teen monster-romance, which is its own thing.

Posted by: Jay at March 17, 2011 9:51 AM

She does look hungry.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at March 17, 2011 10:01 AM

Without makeup she still looks really young and they can always dye her hair. I approve. She's actually supposed to be beautiful (but unaware that she is) so I would have chosen her over Chloe and Hailee as well... not that they aren't both adorable.

Posted by: LauraB at March 17, 2011 10:03 AM

"Attractive"? Maybe if she were dazzling me with a smile. That look is just trying to hard to be "hot."

Posted by: , at March 17, 2011 10:04 AM

*--too.

Must. Have. Coffee.

Posted by: , at March 17, 2011 10:05 AM

Gary Ross directing? Seabiscuit and Pleasantville were, wait for it, pleasant enough (waits for applause to die down) so this has potential to be done competently. But then so were Lords of Dogtown and Thirteen, and most of us agree on how Twilight turned out with Hardwicke at the helm.

Sometimes actors and directors can rise above filmsy material, but not always. I think KStew's a good actress and Hardwicke's a competent director, but Twilight was poop. I likewise think that Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress and Gary Ross is competent, so there's still a chance this could also be poop.

But then maybe I should be comparing Twilight to Hunger Games to begin with.

Posted by: SARS at March 17, 2011 10:05 AM

Considering I read The Hunger Games series after watching Winter's Bone, and I couldn't help but see Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss the whole time, I would say I'm really happy about this casting. I just hope they don't blow it and go with Alex Petyfer as Peeta. Katniss has to be played by someone that can carry a movie on her performance alone. If you don't believe in the actress, then it won't work. I'm still worried they are going to soften the series for movies and screw it up horribly but this is a giant step in the right direction. Lawrence was phenomenal in Winter's Bone, if she brings that caliber of acting to this it will go a long way toward patching over the holes that may result from dumbing down the narrative.

Posted by: TylerDFC at March 17, 2011 10:06 AM

I think Jennifer is a phenomenal actress, but the problem I have with this casting is that the horror of the Hunger Games is that these are *children* being subjected to these atrocities. Casting someone who looks like she's in her twenties (and is, in fact, in her twenties) takes away from that.

Posted by: Jenny at March 17, 2011 10:11 AM

Of all the pictures of Lawrence on the web, this is what you went with? Boo!

She's a truly talented young actress traversing the tripping road of stardom in Hollywood that loves to look at and tear down young beauties, and you're playing into that. She's going to be playing a teen who is often covered in dirt and layers, and you post a pic of her wet in a bathing suit? That's a shitty move.

I'm thrilled they went with Lawrence because few of the mentioned candidates looked as the book described, so I'd rather they pick an actress with some craft to her credit than a kid. Yes, some of the younger actresses have done great work so far - but this is a movie that would rest almost entirely on their shoulders, and that's a different beast. (Note Steinfeld was called a supporting actress even though she was the film's protagonist.)

I think this is a great call, we'll just have to see who takes on Peeta and Gale.

Posted by: Come On! at March 17, 2011 10:16 AM

I think it works. She certainly has the acting chops. They just gotta dye her hair and probably give her a spray tan since they kept going on and on and on about how dark Katniss is.

Also, I don't think Katniss was that young. She was 15, right? That's teenager-status. Jennifer Lawrence can definitely pull it off. Besides, they are supposed to be hardened children, so perhaps it'll be good if they had some maturity to their look.

Posted by: denesteak at March 17, 2011 10:19 AM

Let's just hope the script is good. At this point I'm pretty confident that anyone talented enough can be believable as a character they don't much "look like" (cough cough, Daniel Craig as Bond), but I'm less confident that a talented cast and crew can overcome a terrible script (cough cough, um... most book adaptations, the end).

One slight note of wariness I have about Lawrence is that she's a total sexpot. In the book, Collins is very careful (at least, IMO) not to make Katniss a sexual object, even though the character is thrust (heh) into some very sexualized, romantic situations, just by way of the plot. Katniss manages to remain a tough, damaged, smart girl trying to stay alive, without her sexuality really overshadowing that, or being used to titillate the audience. But when you toss someone as lush and obviously sensual as Lawrence into the mix, it's almost beyond the audience's control to sexualize the character.

That wasn't well said. I guess my fear is that with someone as sexy as Lawrence in the lead, the whole thing could become one big bodice-ripper. I mean, all those nights of Katniss and Peeta clinging to each other in the same sleeping bag in the arena... Katniss stripping Peeta to wash out the wound in his leg... these are scenes that with older-looking actors become pretty fraught with sexual tension, rather than just being kids trying to survive a game.

Posted by: heatseeker at March 17, 2011 10:20 AM

heatseeker: Have you seen Winter's Bone? There is not a sexy frame in that movie. Lawrence is a highly intelligent actress, I have every faith she would balk at this if they planned to sexualize Katniss.

Posted by: TylerDFC at March 17, 2011 10:24 AM

Only reason I object? I wanted Lawrence as Joanna. Desperately. She's a fabulous actress, and I'm not horrified at her playing Katniss, but I think she was a better fit for Joanna. Now time to see if the boys are cast well...

Sidenote: My pick for Haymitch? Hugh Laurie. If that happens, I will be overjoyed.

Posted by: KatSings at March 17, 2011 10:34 AM

Um, she's white.

Posted by: Wren at March 17, 2011 10:35 AM

TylerDFC, I have seen Winter's Bone, but the difference is that in Winter's Bone she's not playing a girl pretending to be in love with a hot stud and stuck in all sorts of romantic situations with him. It's the plot + Lawrence that worries me, not Lawrence alone.

Posted by: heatseeker at March 17, 2011 10:39 AM

The idea of Hugh Laurie As Haymitch is perfect! That would Be fantastic! I also hoe that they don't cast this Pettyfer guy as Peeta, he rubs me the wrong way and I want to like Peeta in the movies.

Posted by: Phedre at March 17, 2011 10:55 AM

It's not the talent that's the problem, it's the fact that Katniss isn't supposed to be particularly Caucasian looking.

I guess.....spray tan and hair dye? Hmph.

Posted by: sarahk at March 17, 2011 11:16 AM

I'm going to have to resign myself to the fact that the movie characters aren't going to look like I had imagined while reading it.

I know that this is already a controversy, but I always pictured her as biracial, though I'm still not 100% convinced that that's how she was written. Apparently the internets are going crazy over this one.

Also, Haymitch, to me was overweight. Again, I'm not sure that's how he was written, but a skinny rich man who has given up on life and has a serious alcohol problem? In my mind, he was always an obese guy who was thin in his youth.

Ah well, I'll be happy as long as they have the talent to do the book justice. I'm just glad I read the book before the casting was done.

Posted by: Tits McGee at March 17, 2011 11:37 AM

If they dye her hair, I could see this working out. But someone mentioned Alex Pettyfer as a possibility for Peeta? Oh god, please don't let that happen. I heard Josh Hutcherson was also being considered. I wonder if he'd make a good blond.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at March 17, 2011 11:57 AM

When I read I never really pictured her any particular way if that makes sense. Just a vague visual. I haven't seen Winter's Bone, but I have no strong feelings about this casting. I am only concerned about how long it will take to shoot all 3 movies and if she will age out. Or will they shoot them all once like Lord of the Rings?
I DO NOT WANT Alex Petywhatever to play Peeta. I also hear them throwing around Hunter Parrish's name. I like him, but I picture Peeta as big and tall and strong. Not like thin and lythe like Katniss. She made a big deal of pointing out that Peeta had always eaten well and was richer. None of these names in my mind call up the big/strong guy I saw.
I agree with you Mel, I totally say Haymitch as heavy. Kind of like he gave up on life.

Posted by: Nimue at March 17, 2011 12:13 PM

White washed and too old. Thanks Hollywood, this is going to be another The Last Airbender.

Posted by: michaelceratops at March 17, 2011 12:21 PM

In the books she's kinda vaguelly described as having "olive skin" and black hair, which always reads to me as Greek/Italian/Spanish looking, but then her mother is blonde with blue eyes, and so is her little sister.

I guess the idea is that she takes after her father, but since we never meet him, Lawrence with dyed hair seems to fit the bill perfectly fine to me.

Posted by: Shawn at March 17, 2011 12:21 PM

I don't know anything about this story, but are Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld not considered good actresses? I was under the impression they were fairly well-respected.

Posted by: Todd at March 17, 2011 12:24 PM

Ugh. I see this going the way of "Really Fracking bad."

Posted by: Lord-ninja at March 17, 2011 12:46 PM

For Haymitch I always pictured that drunk guy at the cafe in Amelie. I know it makes no sense.

Jennifer Lawrence, coloring and age issues aside, seems too bodacious to play Katniss. This is a girl who is used to starvation. I have a hard time picturing Katniss with kurves.

Also, if Alex Pettfyer is cast as Peeta I will fucking revolt. He's too angular and pretty! And Peeta isn't an arrogant douchenozzle!

Posted by: Internet magpie at March 17, 2011 12:58 PM

I am aware that no version of the movie will ever be as good as my imagination was reading the book, and I'm sure that goes for the rest of you as well. I'm still holding a grudge against the Tinseltown gods for the abomination that was "the Golden Compass". I sure hope this doesn't go down that same road (ie. dumbing down the story, changing the plot, and making it digestible for those who prefer to check their brains at the door). Cynicism aside, I hope they make it at least PG-13, it needs to be visceral.

Posted by: io at March 17, 2011 1:24 PM

I haven't seen Winter's Bone, so despite me taking it on faith that Lawrence is truly talented, looks-wise this casting is all wrong for me. I was hoping more for someone like Zoe Saldana, 10 years younger. Does such a girl exist? I mean, Lawrence might have the commitment to lose weight for the role (or she might not have to by direction, who knows) but to me the "hair dye and spray tan" thing just flies in the face of Collin's concerted efforts to describe Katniss as, well, not not-Caucasian per se but DEFINITELY not Anglo. I know JL is a big name now, but I just have a hard time believing that there isn't a single girl out there who is more age and ethnically appropriate, and who is also a good actress.

Posted by: Amanda6 at March 17, 2011 1:24 PM

She is too old. I am disappoint.

Pettyfer seems like an absurd choice for Peeta. I thought Peeta was supposed to be sort of doughy and plain. You know, the kind of dude who grows on you until you fall in love with his heart (gag).

There is a perfect role for Pettyfer, though: Finnick Odair.

I see Haymitch as an unshaved Jim Broadbent type.

Posted by: Skyler Durden at March 17, 2011 1:24 PM

As a side note, obviously the Peeta and Gale casting are crucial, but I'm admittedly most excited to see who they get to play alleged Adonis Finnick Odair.

Posted by: Amanda6 at March 17, 2011 1:27 PM

I was really hoping for Saorsie Ronin, who is also whiter than I imagined Katniss to be, but I think would just nail the role.

Posted by: DominaNefret at March 17, 2011 1:35 PM

Damn. I saw Kaya Scodelario in that role.
Jennifer Lawrence is too mainstream-pretty. They'll need to starve her a lot to coax some cheekbones into her cute face.

Posted by: Rooks at March 17, 2011 1:55 PM

I am a huge fan of The Hunger Games trilogy and was so, so anxious about this casting choice. When Jennifer Lawrence's name came up, I was like, "Bwuh?" Katniss is not blond, and she's scrawny, no?

Then I saw Winter's Bone. In addition to being a very, very good movie, it was like the perfect audition for Katniss. I think this is just top-notch casting.

Posted by: Kowala1000 at March 17, 2011 2:07 PM

Dream casting for Rue: Snookie.

I have bad, bad dreams.

Posted by: logar at March 17, 2011 3:07 PM

Kidding aside, I'd like to see Gary Oldman as Haymitch. He could chew it up.

J. Laur is fine for Katniss- I'm not worried about her skill, just making her seem young enough.

Peeta will be difficult. You don't want a pretty boy, and he needs to have some bulk. He needs gentleness and heart (I've only read the first book so far). Good luck with that. Maybe an X-men era Shawn Ashmore, bulked up a bit.

Gale I see as a Legend-era Tom Cruise, only younger. He'll be relatively easy to cast.

Posted by: logar at March 17, 2011 3:16 PM

I agree with denesteak. she certainly has the acting chops. also, gary ross directed pleasantville so this might actually turn out well!

Posted by: rachizle at March 17, 2011 3:40 PM

For Haymitch: Harrison Ford.

Posted by: TL at March 17, 2011 8:01 PM

I think that Paul Giamatti would kill it as Haymitch. He'd be terrifying, hilarious and sad all at once.

Posted by: Tits McGee at March 17, 2011 9:59 PM

Rooks, I was hoping for Kaya Scodelario too. Or Hailee Steinfeld. I'm not sure I'll be able to forget Lawrence is a 20 year old (approximately) playing a 15 year old, but she is a stellar actress. I will remain cautiously optomistic.

Posted by: Even Stevens at March 17, 2011 11:32 PM

Jennifer Lawrence is a good choice. Physical appearances doesn't matter much, what matters is how well the actress can perform, so she's perfect in every detail.

Posted by: Atlanta Roofing at March 18, 2011 1:55 AM

They better not cast Willow Smith as Rue!

Posted by: Az at March 18, 2011 2:27 AM

Who is Kaya Scodelario? (Minus the fact that she was in UK Skins. I can use the Google.) I'd never heard of her beyond people saying that she would be the perfect Katniss. Is she really that good?

Posted by: Amanda6 at March 18, 2011 11:27 AM

I was really hoping for Hailee Steinfeld, I think she did an amazing job in True Grit, but Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress too. Just glad it isn't Chloe Moretz...

Posted by: faintingviolet at March 18, 2011 4:52 PM

So, I read this post and due to the enthusiasm over the series in some of these comments I decided to read the first Hunger Games book. I loved it.
Now, having read this thread and having the thought of Lawrence as Katniss already implanted I think she is pretty perfect. Inadvertently, however, I also began to picture Pettyfer as Peeta because of all of the speculation here, so now I kind of want him to play him just because I have gotten to used to picturing his face. Damn.
Rue should be Chloe Moretz! And although I am no Giamatti fan, I think he works as Haymitch.
I really hope this film doesn't blow.
