It's Hard to Be An Older Slut

The French know how to handle older women - at least according to Kristin Scott Thomas (Tell No One, I’ve Loved You So Long). Having hit the big 50 recently, she’s enjoying taking roles such as the wife she plays in Catherine Corsini’s Leaving. The award winning, Oscar nominated actress notes the contrast between how women over 40 are perceived in different countries, saying, “I think the thing about France in particular—and maybe other countries like Italy, not so much in England, because England kind of apes the U.S.—the way women are perceived is not that once you’re past 40, you’re past IT. But on the contrary, experience is very attractive, and we like seeing a woman with lines, we like seeing a woman who looks like she has experience; that’s exciting. I think that’s just a pity there isn’t a little more of that elsewhere.” (Huffington Post) In Leaving, she portrays a wife in an abusive marriage who falls for another man and gives up everything - money, status, home, family - in her life to be with him. The film required Scott Thomas to participate in several sex scenes and she enjoyed showing the reality of being a sensuous older woman.

We’ve seen the cheating story many times over (Unfaithful, Little Children, The Painted Veil) but this one is French and everyone knows the French do it better. I mean, look at Johnny Depp - he’s basically pretending to be French and it makes him even more attractive to a lot of women. So though she’s cheating and these things usually end badly, at least we can see a lovely, over-40 actress who isn’t afraid of her age and still embraces her sexuality. And hey, fucking around in French!

Leaving opened in limited release October 1, 2010 and if you’re lucky it’ll play at a nearby little art theater.

So she wants to cheat AND get all the money?

*eyes roll into throat and travel through digestive tract, get shit into the toilet and flushed into the ocean, swept up in a sea trawler's net, sold at a fish market to a lonely hunter, escapes hunter's cabin only to be swallowed by a giant bear, possesses bear's brain and hunts down delusional bitches for sport*

Yeah. Whatever, lady.

Aren't they all? They hand those things out like candy on Halloween.

Also: She's 50? Wow.

She's hot. Good for her for being hot.

ahem. I like this and have to agree that once you've gotten to a certain age you've likely earned a ribbon for 'technique' in a few things.

You may not be an orange-colored hardbody, capable of breakdance style floor spin sex, but most of that stuff is just to be stunt-y, and it chafes.

"breakdance style floor spin sex"

there is a LOT going on there, Rep.

i didn`t get the impression that she was in an abusive marriage, more that she was tired of it. looking it up on IMDB gives you a different spin:

`Suzanne is a well to do married woman and mother in the south of France. Her idle bourgeois lifestyle gets her down and she decides to go back to work as a physiotherapist. Her husband agrees to fix up a consulting room for her in their backyard. When Suzanne and the man hired to do the building meet, the mutual attraction is sudden and violent. Suzanne decides to give up everything and live this all engulfing passion to the fullest.`

so, more of a midlife crisis meets sweaty blue collar hunk type film.

I saw this twice. Fucking amazing stuff. French films have such a great knack for making all the little things we do so human. There's a lot of silences which make greater impact than shooting out any old crap, but it also leaves a lot open for your own interpretation.

Suzanne's a hard character to sympathise with, and some people will HATE her. Her jilted husband becomes abusive only after she admits to the affair; and the depths she plummets to (humiliating herself for money, climbing out windows, driving from restaurant to restaurant to find where her lover is working that day, and of course the ending) kind of shocks you with how obsessive passion can be.

There. That's my arty critic out of the way. Now time to let the A-OOOOO-GA! out of the box. Sergi Lopez. Yes please. See it for the steamy sex scenes. Those wacky frogs. They KNOW how to film it. Why else do you think I saw it twice?

Did anyone else think of "Eat, Pray, Love" after reading the IMDB summary idleprimate posted? No? Fine, I'll let myself out.

*raises hand*

I was going to say, if she'd only read "Eat, Pray, Love" she'd be banging Javier Bardem in ... where was it, Italy?

Sergi Lopez AND Kristin Scott Thomas. Yep, I'll be watching this.
