It's a Bad Way

I’ll never forget the images of Munich’s red light district. I have a little slow motion memory, driving through a path of trailers with red (and other color) lights casting a certain festive glow over a the fleet of mobile hotel rooms. Some of the women advertised by standing in front of a window; on other trailers, the glass was shadowed by sheer curtains and only vague movement could be seen. Though prostitution is legal, Munich doesn’t allow solicitation out on the streets, so the ladies had their own version of a campground, widely patrolled by the Polizei. I guess it sticks in my brain because the visual was motion picture-ish; sometimes one has those moments in life where time seems to stand still or seconds crawl. The flashes in this trailer reminded me of that time. Anyway, sometimes it’s easy to project (perhaps because of film) a sort of glamor onto the world of prostitution, even though in reality, there’s probably not a lot of beauty to be found. And even when film takes on the ugliness, it often involves gorgeous women in improbable circumstances - but you know, we like the fantasy. And so goes Australian director Jon Hewitt’s (Acolytes) latest thriller, X, which follows burned-out hooker Holly Rowe (Viva Bianca, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”) and new girl, Shay (Hanna Mangan Lawrence, Acolytes) thrown together on a job that goes “horribly wrong”. Against the backdrop of Sydney’s criminal underworld, Holly and Shay spend the night fighting for their lives. IFC Midnight has just picked up U.S. rights to X and here’s the intriguing trailer to whet your appetite:

IFC Midnight bills itself as offering the best in international genre cinema, including horror, sci-fi, thrillers, erotic arthouse and action and promotes films that “shock audiences, push boundaries and stir up controversy” (Antichrist, Dead Snow, Doghouse, Don’t Look Back, Enter the Void), so I’m looking forward to X.

Having been acquainted with several prostitutes on a personal (never a business) level, they will tell you that it is mostly a life of drudgery and soul-crushing sameness. Still, they like the money,it is the life they have chosen and they carry on.
Much like the rest of us.

Having been acquainted with several prostitutes on a business level I...uh. What was I saying?

Query: Do these gritty prostitution movies ever show anything other than reasonably attractive Johns (or clients)? I suspect the reality is that the vast majority of the clientele of these ladies do NOT possess movie star looks or charisma. Unless you happen to be in Charlie Sheen's book, and baby doll is looking a bit rough these days....

They should have filmed the original Pretty Woman script instead.

And just what do you know that we don't, Darth?

Having encountered prostitutes in my line of work, I will say this:

Stay the hell away.

Many of them are addicted to something, a few have more social diseases than you can shake a spirochete at, and if you see a hooker with a full set of teeth she's very likely a cop.

Oh, I hope he killed Julia and hacked her into tiny pieces. That would have been best.
