It Was A Graveyard Smash

Insert Herman’s open-mouthed, awkward clapping here — finally some reboot news I can get behind. Don’t get me wrong, I love the original series “The Munsters” and I can’t see anyone topping it. But it is quite outdated and if done right could be wildly entertaining. And the good news is, it has a very real possibility of being done right.

NBC has ordered a pilot from Bryan Fuller (Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me), calling the potential new series a cross between Modern Family and True Blood. I’ll have to assume they’re talking about the campy, clean parts of True Blood, because Alan Ball has a whole lotta stuff going on that NBC can’t air. The final exciting tidbit of this news is that Guillermo del Toro has some sort of behind the scenes involvement — right now there are no details about what exactly that means, but it’s enough to get me excited. A little del Toro can only make anything better.

There’s nothing left to do but watch a clip and make cast speculations. Let’s hear your suggestions, Pajibans.

Bryan Fuller is pretty good about finding unknowns for his shows so I'd have a hell of a time speculating. The best I could come up with is Lee Pace making an appearance. Or perhaps even Paul Reubens.

Justin Beiber was born to play Eddie Munster...that little twatwaffle would be perfect.

The obvious, please-don't-do-it choice for Herman is Brad Garrett since he's been imitating that character for years in his act. But he doesn't have the acting chops to elevate the character. Anyway, here's a dream list:

Herman - Jeff Goldblum
Lily - Joan Allen or Tilda Swinton
Grandpa - Danny Devito
Eddie - Any creepy little kid who can act

They should have made this a few years ago, when Grandpa could have still played Grandpa. He would have loved it.

Herman: Sacha Baron Cohen
Lily: Christina Hendricks
Grandpa: Jared Harris
Marilyn: January Jones
Eddie: Elijah Wood

I LOVE KBalls' and BWeaves' suggestions. They should alternate casts, because I want to see both of these.

I was always more of an Addams Family guy.

Herman: Dwayne Johnson or Nick Cage.
Lily: Christina Ricci
Grandpa: Steve Buscemi
Marilyn: Anna Paquin (that loopy Stackhouse act would actually be appropriate here)
Eddie: Seth Green is unfortunately too old. He did play a werewolf though-eh, cast an unknown.

Megan Fox looks just like Lily. (Just me?)

Al Lewis is irreplaceable.

Tim Burton must be kicking himself, because Danny DeVito would be a great Grandpa and Helena B-C as Lily would rock, with Danny Elfman doing the music of course. Filmed in B&W.

I don't care how good this could be. I want them to just stop rebooting everything. Original ideas people. Come on.

But since it's being done anyway,

Herman:Ron Perlman
Lily:Polly Walker
Grandpa:Patton Oswalt (Danny Devito idea is genius but I think it would come off too much like Frank from Sunny.)

Posted by: PaulterA at October 1, 2010 11:24 AM

I always thought the best part of the show was the music. And Grandpa. But if that's the dude behind Heroes, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Butch Patrick should be involved somehow. That is if he can take time off from all his appearances at Philly area Halloween attractions. I bought tickets to the Eddie Munster Terror train, where he reads ghost stories on a train.

Who wants or needs this except maybe Universal, who wants to keep their rights on the Frankenstein makeup warm? And wow, that's something worth protecting. god knows how many would use it now if they didn't.

I mean, this makes almost no sense now. The original--which was always a lame show that the Addams Family outclassed in every way, IMO--was popular because (a) it was a late riff on the Ozzie & Harriet-type family sitcom popular at the time and (b) used a bunch of monster characters that had been made newly popular(see ED WOOD for a quick reference) by running on TV for the first time.

Nobody CARES about these versions of the characters anymore. They're beyond dated and corny in every way. They're barely Halloween costumes for five-year-olds now. So who's expected to watch this? Not kids, I imagine. The only way you could make it work is if you updated it to more current "monsters." But Evan Dorkin already DID the Murder Family, so that's out.

I expect this, if it airs, to last till the first ad is over.

How about, no. Just no.

I loved Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies...and this could actually work, but I agree with PaulterA.

Just stop, for the love of god.

No more "reboots"!

If it were like...the year 5000, then fine, go ahead, I don't care. I'm dead.

Herman Munster = Jenna Elfman

Posted by: Dave at October 1, 2010 2:57 PM

No. It should be a Movie - in 3D.

And next I want a Hogan's Heroes Movie.

I'm going to pretend NBC is letting Fuller make more episodes of Pushing Daisies instead. Pie! Bees! Secrets!!

*sigh*

Posted by: Lauren at October 1, 2010 5:09 PM

This is too retarded to think about.

I had that idea and most of the cast about 25 years ago:

Col. Hogan: Bill Murray
Sgt. Schultz: John Candy
Newkirk: Richard Dawson, again
LeBeau: Rick Moranis
Kinchloe: Richard Pryor

The plot would have been a comedy in the usual vein for the first half, with the POWs being liberated from the camp in wacky fashion and the war ending, but in the second half on their way back to the Allied lines they would have wandered upon Auschwitz, or Buchenwald, and maybe had to admit that life in the Nazi camps wasn't ALL fun and games for everyone.
