Orchestrating the Guitar Like An Army, a Guitar Army

Jack White Plays With Giants / TK

Trade News | June 11, 2009 | Comments (24)

Jack White’s an interesting guy. I genuinely like him, though I don’t always care for The White Stripes (yet I love The Raconteurs). But I admire anyone who pushes the envelope a little, who experiments. It Might Get Loud is a documentary about the history and use of the electric guitar, focusing on White as he spend time with rock legends The Edge and Jimmy Page.

So, basically a guitar player’s dream movie.

Personally, I like how the three seem to have an easygoing camaraderie, and I’m dying to see this. I love the idea of bringing distinctive sounding guitarists together and just seeing what happens. It appears that it’s main focus is on White as the sort of New Jack guitar player, which is a solid approach. And the idea of original music featuring the three of them makes me wiggle in my seat a bit.

Though — I’m curious. What do they call “The Edge?” Edge? The? As in, “hey, Edge, I’m gonna make some egg salad — you interested?”

These are the things that keep me awake at night.

Here’s the trailer. No release date has been announced yet.

Edge would never sully himself with such rancid swill. You're gonna make me vomit.

(I've been dying to see this too)

This looks AWESOME. Totally awesome. Can't wait. Is it just me or does Jack White sometimes try to look like Ritchie Blackmoore?

i saw this film at tiff.

it was pretty awesome, especially when they jammed on zeppelin tunes. jack white was good, but out-classed at times. i realize that they were going for the multi-generational perspective, but a better third would have been someone like neil young, eddie van halen, david gilmour, tony iommi, kirk hammett or alex lifeson.

I am a White Stripes fan, often to the bewilderment of my two percussion playing siblings ("But Meg White can't play the drums!" "It works in context" "HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT!?!"). I'd say I'd probably get around to seeing this, except that I've got a Led Zeppelin aversion that dates back to high school. Sorry.

This looks really good and I have to say that Jack White has the most bad ass guiltar ever. And I say that as a Pepsi fan.

Bill Simmons ("the Sports Guy") recently dealt with the whole issue of how one addresses "The Edge" in his podcast (The BS Report). Apparently The Edge insists on the "The", even from Bono. In other words, Bono might say something like, "Hey The Edge, could you hand me that mic stand?"
Crazy.

Am I the only person noticed that"In Theater Aug 14th" At the end of the trailer?

Coincidentally, I just made (and am eating while I read) egg salad. I'd probably just pull a Rob Schneider and be like, "Hey Edge-o-rama, Edge-a-rino, how's it hanging Mr. Edge-er-ific?"

ally, from my understanding, that date has been pushed back. -TK

Random Jack White Story:
He lives in Nashville a lot of the time and my former boss used to run into him (literally) almost every Saturday at Home Depot. I had to go to Home Depot a few times, and was hoping to have a similar experience. Never happened. i have to make do with the boring Nashville celeb sightings.

TK - have you heard anything Jack's new other band, The Dead Weather? The album, "Horehound," comes out in July. Not sure if there is a single out yet

I may get flack for this, but I think that while Jack White is more talented than either of the cats in the Black Keys, the Black Keys are what the White Stripes really should be.

Maybe I'm going too far, but I feel like sometimes Jack gets too caught up in doing things that other people couldn't or wouldn't do, whereas the Keys focus mostly on making really filthy stripped down rock and roll, which Jack can be really good at when he doesn't have his head too far up his own ass.

Really I like them both, though. In a perfect world most of rock and roll on the radio would be as creative and nasty as what they kick out.

Eep, I think of The White Stripes and the Black Keys as two totally different animals. Interesting. I'd have never made that connection, but it's kind of a fair point. I like them both, but I feel like Jack White is more adept at making classic, straight-up bluegrass without it sounding hokey.

And like the ladies above, I also want to do shockingly depraved things to him. Woof.

I think the White Stripes are okay, but I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize how talented Jack White was until I heard his songs on the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack. Wow.

Must be a mistake, is The Edge that plays with GIANTS!

Posted by: chiarina at July 12, 2009 8:17 AM

My three would have been;

BB King
David Gilmour
The Edge
